Step It Up Again
Nobel Peace Prize! The enhancement of Al Gore's international visibility and popularity through the leading search engines on Internet has been assisted by the publication of WBTI's Forum
By Al Gore*1

Dear Tony,

The power of a single individual to create change has always inspired me. Earlier this year, my friend Bill McKibben decided he was going to establish a day of action to fight the climate crisis.*2

Out of his idea, ?Step It Up 2007? was born, and on April 14th tens of thousands of people, including thousands of members of AlGore.com, joined together at 1,400 rallies to raise their voices and demand that Congress cut carbon 80% by 2050.

?Step It Up 2: Who's A Leader? will take place this Saturday. You can find a rally in your area by visiting:

http://events.stepitup2007.org

"Step It Up 2" is going to be an incredible event. Already, 59 Members of Congress and 7 Presidential candidates have signed up to attend rallies around the country.

Participating is so easy: just click the link above and find a Step It Up event in your area. With hundreds scheduled in all 50 states, there is probably a rally near your home.

After you RSVP, use Step It Up's online tool to invite your member of Congress, both your Senators, and all of the presidential candidates. We need to convince as many of our elected leaders as possible to attend these events so they can witness first-hand the huge movement demanding action to solve the climate crisis.

Just the act of inviting your member of Congress will help demonstrate the incredible support for our cause.

Sign up to attend a Step It Up Rally by visiting:

http://events.stepitup2007.org

People like Bill McKibben and events like Step It Up are helping us build the political will necessary to end the climate crisis. It is vital you participate in any way you can -- November 3rd is going to be an incredible day.*3

Thank you,

Al Gore

You - the alumni and friends of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology - are Pepperdine!
I am inviting you to share information about ...
By Dr. Margaret J. Weber

Dear Alumni and Friends of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology,

"How is Pepperdine?" This is the question faculty, staff, students and I have been answering since a major fire broke out in Malibu Canyon adjacent to the main campus last Sunday. On Monday, President Andrew Benton sent an email message to all University alumni providing information about how the Malibu Canyon Fire affected the main campus, faculty and staff.*1

The fires that have ravaged CA are not as much in the news today as they were a week ago, but they are very much on my mind; so I am writing to ask the, "How is Pepperdine?" question in a different way. You - the alumni and friends of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology - are Pepperdine. On behalf of the entire community, I am inviting you to share information about how the fires in CA are affecting you (Respond electronically to gsepalum@pepperdine.edu )

...................

On 9/11/01 Queen Elizabeth II of England ordered the flag of the United States to be flown at Buckingham Palace, and the French newspaper LeMonde famously proclaimed, "We are all Americans today."

The current faculty, staff and student body of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology feel a similar solidarity with our alumni as together we face the challenges created by these fires of October, 2007.

With prayers for your safety and thanksgiving for your courage and service, *2

Happy Nevada Day!
I am writing to let you know that ...
Harry M. Reid*1

On this day in 1864, Nevada became the 36th state to enter the union. The phrase Battle Born is emblazoned on our flag to reflect the states entry on the Union side during the Civil War. Today, we find ourselves in the midst of another battle as we fight to prevent Nevada from becoming the nations nuclear dumping ground.*2

This morning, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works held a hearing to investigate the licensing process for the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump. I attended the hearing and spoke before the committee, calling into question the integrity of the licensing process, which is rigged against the State of Nevada. The information that has come out of the hearing this morning shines a bright spotlight on the problems associated with this dangerous plan to transport more than 77,000 tons of nuclear waste across the country to Nevada.

Despite the Government Accountability Office exhaustive reports on quality assurance failures regarding research done at the site, the Department of Energy plans to file a license application next year. Now that the license application process is upon us and we ready for what many believe will be the final battle against this dump, Nevadans are again left shaking their heads in dismay as the federal government attempts to stack the deck against the Silver State. Instead of sticking to the commitment that Yucca Mountain would proceed only if it would actually protect public health, EPA has cast sound science aside in favor of politics in the myopic pursuit of Yucca Mountain.

And so today, Nevada Day, I am writing to let you know that as our fight against Yucca Mountain continues, I will continue to leverage my leadership position in the Senate to ensure the dump is never built. And to those who think they can turn Nevada into our nations nuclear dumping ground, they need only look at those two words written on our state flag to know that we will not back down. We are only 8 months away from the Department of Energys deadline to submit the license application for review by the NRC. I am anxious for this final battle to be over so that we can move on to resolving the underlying problem of what to do with our countrys nuclear waste.*3

Sincerely,

Harry Reid

*1. About U. S. Senator Harry Reid: U. S. Senator Harry M. Reid is the Majority Leader (the Democratic Leader) in the U. S. Senate. He is a man who commands the respect of colleagues from both parties, and a powerful advocate for Nevadas middle-class families.
But he still lives in Searchlight and he is still guided by the lessons and values he learned there.
The Las Vegas Sun newspaper summarized Reids story by saying that he has gone from underdog to Senates top dog.?Parade Magazine, the nations largest weekly magazine, identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington with integrity and guts.?
Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has said, We all respect Senator Reid. He is one of the moderate voices around here who tries to get things to work.?
And former GOP Leader Trent Lott said, Harry Reid is out there finding a solution. I enjoy working with him very much.?
He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and re-elected in 1992, 1998 and 2004. He has served as the chairman or senior Democratic member on several important committees and subcommittees.
Reid is a tireless worker, and it isnt unusual for him to be the first Senator of either party to arrive at the Capitol in the morning and the last to go home at night.
U. S. Senator Harry Reid has been honored as a Professor of Administrative Strategies of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) since May 31, 2003.

California Fires and the Pepperdine Community
I would ask that you take a moment to write about those heroes who have volunteered to help others and committed to strengthening lives for purpose, service, and leadership!
By Dr. Andrew K. Benton

Dear Tony:

I have received many calls from Pepperdine University alumni inquiring about the well-being of our campus in the wake of the devastating fires that struck Southern California. I am grateful to be able to share with you that all of our campuses in Los Angeles and Orange counties are safe and secure.*1

Property damage at our Malibu campus was limited to a portion of a pool shack near ...
.........................
In recent days I have heard inspiring accounts of Pepperdine people who have volunteered their homes, their time, and their labor to help others. We have seen everyday heroes working quietly, selflessly among us -- which is, in truth, precisely what we have come to expect from this marvelous University community, committed to strengthening lives for purpose, service, and leadership.

In closing, I would ask that you take a moment to write or e-mail me about those heroes -- especially those connected to Pepperdine University -- whom you have witnessed in action. I would enjoy the opportunity to hear your stories and share them with others.*2

Sincerely,

Andrew K. Benton

Dear judy,

You know, I've spent a lot of birthdays with good friends and my wonderful family, but this is the first time I've received birthday wishes from more than 100,000 friends!

This birthday was a special one, and not just because I turned 60. This year, I didn't just celebrate turning one year older. I celebrated having so many people working with me toward the real change that you and I know our country so desperately needs.

Whether I'm out on the campaign trail talking to someone struggling to make ends meet or back in Washington working to expand health care for children, I never forget why I am in this race. I am so proud to have you with me making a difference for our country.

Thank you so much for your message and for all you do for our campaign. You really made this birthday wonderful.

Sincerely,

(Autograph)
Hillary Rodham Clinton
