Deaths of two entertainers among Top 10 stories for year

Could a year go by in Southern Nevada without its share of political scandal, celebrity newsmakers and public health scares?

Maybe, but not this year.

U.S. Sen. John Ensign's infidelities. Michael Jackson's death and subsequent investigation. The swine flu panic.

They all made headlines in 2009, and they all made the top 10 news stories of the year, as voted on by the Las Vegas Review-Journal's staff.

So did the sudden death of Danny Gans, the end -- possibly -- of Yucca Mountain, and others.

Just missing the top 10 list were the region's continuing water woes, cash-strapped University Medical Center paying $20 million for dialysis for illegal immigrants, and the state's new domestic partners law.

But enough about what didn't make the list and on to the story of the year: the sour economy. It appeared in these pages in some form or another almost every day, making it the top story by a wide margin. And at the rate things are going, there's a good chance it'll make the list next year.

1. HARD TIMES

Look around your neighborhood. There are "For Sale" signs on your block, not because people want to move but because they have to. As a state, Nevada was the worst in the nation for foreclosures in 2009.

More families than ever are at local charities for the first time, getting food and looking for shelter assistance. Others are just living day-to-day on unemployment benefits.

The state's unemployment rate hovered at 13 percent this year, second worst in the country. And even when there was a slight downtick in that statistic, it wasn't because more people were employed, but because the labor pool was shrinking. People just gave up looking for work, or they were getting out of Dodge.

Local municipalities faced hard choices in the face of declining revenues: Obtain wage concessions from employees or lay off workers.

Headlines for the gaming sector were the same each month: Revenue is down.

Construction industry jobs disappeared by the thousands.

The one bright spot was CityCenter, the $8.5 billion project that opened this month with 12,000 new jobs.

But some see that as a gamble as well.

"The party's over," said Mary Riddel, associate professor at UNLV and interim director of the Center for Business and Economic Research.

2. ENSIGNGATE

John Ensign's dalliances with a former campaign staffer overshadowed just about everything anyone else in the state's delegation did on Capitol Hill.

In June the once-rising Republican star admitted to an affair with Cindy Hampton. And when it looked like the news couldn't get worse for Ensign, it did.

After news of the affair broke, Doug Hampton, her husband and a former high-level employee in Ensign's Senate office, went on local television and interviewed with the New York Times and "Nightline" to detail allegations that Ensign helped him land lobbying work with companies seeking to influence the senator.

Hampton also revealed a $96,000 payment from Ensign's parents, which Ensign's attorney characterized as a gift. Hampton says it was severance to leave the office, and critics characterized it as hush money.

Ensign has denied any unethical or illegal behavior.

Still, the sordid saga led to an investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee, talk of potential prosecution for violating lobbying restrictions and a blow to Ensign's political career from which he may never recover.

3. TRAGIC YEAR FOR POLICE

The Metropolitan Police Department had lost four officers in the line of duty in the past 20 years. Then it lost four in six months, by far the deadliest stretch in the history of Southern Nevada law enforcement.

The deaths began May 7 when officer James Manor's patrol car, traveling 109 mph with no lights or sirens on Flamingo Road, hit a pickup that turned left in front of it. Manor, 28, was not wearing a seat belt.

Five months later, officer Milburn Beitel, 30, died when his speeding patrol car swerved to avoid another car and crashed. Beitel was not wearing a seat belt.

Sheriff Doug Gillespie said both officers were driving too fast, and he ordered a review of department driving policies and increased training.

A month after Beitel's death, officer Trevor Nettleton, 30, was killed in a shootout with two teens in the garage of his North Las Vegas home.

Two days later, corrections officer Daniel Leach died when his police van struck a tractor-trailer and crashed on U.S. Highway 95 near Searchlight. He was wearing a seat belt and driving between 67 and 73 mph in the 65 mph zone. Gillespie called Leach's death an accident.

4. KING OF POP

Rumors about a Strip comeback for Michael Jackson had been circulating for years, but it wasn't until his death that the entertainment icon made headlines again in Las Vegas.

Jackson died June 25 in Los Angeles, but his deathbed doctor lived and worked in Las Vegas, which brought investigators and media hordes to the desert in search of answers.

With news cameras rolling, Los Angeles police and federal drug agents teamed up to search Dr. Conrad Murray's Red Rock Country Club home and cardiology office. They also searched a Las Vegas pharmacy where Murray, 56, purchased propofol, an anesthetic that killed Jackson.

Murray reportedly is back working at his Houston office while the criminal investigation continues.

5. REID'S YEAR

U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, a Democrat, who spent much of 2008 sparring with President George W. Bush, spent 2009 shepherding through the Senate the most comprehensive piece of health legislation since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965.

As Senate majority leader, Reid was the point man who helped President Barack Obama deliver on his promise to deliver reform legislation early in his presidency.

The role put Reid in the spotlight as the man who would take the credit -- or the blame -- for the legislation that divided Nevadans.

Reid also in 2009 was key in delivering a near death sentence to an unpopular proposal to store high-level radioactive waste at Yucca Mountain (more on that later).

Reid ends the year looking ahead to his re-election bid in 2010. He has a massive war chest, but challengers hoping to unseat him are encouraged by his flat poll numbers.

6. DANNY GANS DIES

Impressionist Danny Gans had been a fixture on Las Vegas marquees for more than a decade when his wife found him unconscious and not breathing in their bed in the early morning hours of May 1.

Despite the efforts of his wife and paramedics to revive him, the 52-year-old never regained consciousness.

Entertainers and fans mourned Gans, who had just begun a run at Encore after eight years at The Mirage, while medical examiners tried to determine what killed the star.

Five weeks later, the coroner's office blamed the accidental death on a combination of heart and blood diseases along with a powerful prescription painkiller used to treat chronic pain, hydromorphone. Gans had battled a painful chronic shoulder injury that required surgery five months earlier.

7. SWINE FLU

Few had heard of the swine flu before this year, but after runs on hand sanitizer, thousands of shots and a few dozen related deaths, H1N1 is now etched in the minds of Southern Nevadans.

The first cases of H1N1 emerged in May, including four at Marion Earl Elementary School. That news prompted hundreds of parents to keep their kids home for several days. The first swine flu-related death in the county came in June, a tourist from New York. The number of Clark County residents who have had swine flu and died now stands at 35. Most had other underlying medical conditions.

The Southern Nevada Health District got its first doses of the injectable vaccine in October, and thousands of people waited hours at a time to get it at free clinics, even if they weren't among groups deemed by health authorities to be high-risk.

The vaccine now has been distributed to pharmacies, doctors offices and other medical facilities. Recent figures show the number of H1N1 cases is declining.

8. RECORD TAXES AND VETOES

In the midst of the worst recession in generations, the Democratic-dominated Legislature approved a record-setting $1 billion in tax increases, raising the sales tax and nearly doubling the payroll tax.

Not to be outdone, Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons set his own record amid constant squabbling with legislators, vetoing 48 bills.

Legislators overrode 25 of those vetoes, thanks to support from at least two state Senate Republicans for each one.

Despite the record tax increases, state coffers were stretched thin as the year drew to a close, and Gibbons was considering calling a special legislative session to deal with dwindling revenues.

9. DOWN FOR THE COUNT

It didn't take long for President Barack Obama, with support from Nevada's congressional delegation, to slash funding for the Yucca Mountain Project to an all-time low and announce no funding by 2011.

The proposed national nuclear waste repository 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, which state officials have fought for more than two decades, was dealt another blow when Obama's energy secretary announced that the site was no longer an option for storing 77,000 tons of spent fuel from around the country.

Still, the Department of Energy continues its pursuit of a license to build the repository -- even if it's going through the motions -- and lawyers for Nevada continue their fight against it.

10. ANYONE BUT JIM

Heading toward a re-election bid next year, Gov. Jim Gibbons can take no comfort in his poll numbers.

Recent polls commissioned by the Review-Journal show Gibbons trailing former U.S. District Judge Brian Sandoval 2-to-1 in a Republican primary. Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid, a Democrat, lags 11 points behind Oscar Goodman, who has not announced whether he intends to seek the governor's office but has changed his voter registration status from Democrat to independent.

Gibbons has dismissed the polls, saying in time his stand against taxes will resonate with voters.

Review-Journal writers Warren Bates, Keith Rogers, Benjamin Spillman and Ed Vogel contributed to this report. Contact reporter Brian Haynes at bhaynes@reviewjournal.com or 702-383-0281.

GOVERNOR GIBBONS SPEAKS WITH SANTA CLAUS
On-time Departure from North Pole Reported

Carson City - Governor Jim Gibbons received a special phone call from Santa Claus early this morning reporting a successful sleigh load and on-time departure from the North Pole. Santa planned to swing through Okinawa, Japan to visit Anthony and Switzerland to visit Cody on his way around the world to his final destination this evening C the United States of America.

After clearing the eastern seaboard, Santa plans to visit Tegan in Hudson, Colorado and Stephanie, Kaylee and Bryce in Lake Havasu City, Arizona before making his way into southern Nevada. While in the Las Vegas area, Santa will fly over the strip to view the lights before visiting Reese, Riley, Emily, Jacob, Lexi, Josh, Jordan, Dylan, Lauren, Maxwell, Kate, Solenne, Celina, Micaela, Victoria, and all the other children who have been good during the past year. In the spirit of Holiday forgiveness, Santa might even visit Dan.

Mr. Claus will pause briefly for some hot cocoa before zipping through Elko to see Lucas and then on into the Reno and Sparks area to unload gifts at the homes of Katie, Peter, Shelby, Carlee, Adam, Zoe, Natalie, Ryan, Brooke, Grant, Rosella and Rosalia. From Reno, Santa will check in with North Pole Central and chart a southerly course to Carson City to try out the chimneys of Chloe, Peter, Noah, Steven and Zach. Onward to Minden and Gardnerville, Santa has special presents in store for Roshelle, Bianca, Mason, and Ashley. From there, Santa will head over to visit our neighbors in California with his final bag of goodies for Jason, Trent, Tanner and Dani.

Santa asked Governor Gibbons to remind all girls and boys to go to bed early tonight and get lots of sleep. Santa cautioned kids should not get up if they hear sounds of sleigh bells outside, reindeer hooves on the roof, or a Ho Ho Ho coming from near the Christmas tree. As usual, Santa appreciates the cookies and milk as he has lots of work tonight and needs the energy.

Governor Gibbons wishes all boys and girls a very Merry Christmas, and reminds you that you can watch Santas trip around the world online at http://www.noradsanta.org/. Just dont forget to go to bed before Santa gets to your house!

07/31/2009 Prayer Journal -Mike
Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for bringing me back from the mission trip. Hallelujah! I see so many fruits there. I see the fruits of the labors of the parents, pastors, and coworkers at church to build into the lives of the youths. Their spiritual maturity is Your blessing and grace. May You continue to build up the youths to grow in maturity and love for You and for others. May they become the home missionaries, which is the purpose of this mission trip boot-camp. Thank You for showing me the purpose of the adults on the trip is to help the youths take the responsibilities such as doing the cleaning. May the youths continue to do these things at church. =) May You help me continue to serve You while Im working here. May You open up ministry opportunities for me. I hope I can be like the apostle Paul, being a tentmaker and doing the work of building up Your body wherever I am. Thank You for my work here and for the church here. Bless CCC! In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this past weekend I can go camping with the small group. It was a spectacular hike to the top of Vernon Falls. When we arrived at Yosemite, we asked a guy how to get to the hiking trail at stop 16. He told us to get on the bus and get off at stop 4 and cross the street to stop 9 to catch another bus. But, while on the bus, the bus driver told us its faster to get off the bus and walk across to stop 10. Our group leader didnt agree, but we all decided to listen to the bus driver and got off the bus. However, we couldnt get on the bus at stop 10 because the bus was always full. We waited and waited. Finally we decide to go back to the original stop, but ran back when we saw an empty bus coming. Then, we found out we had gotten on the same bus we got off. I told the group leader its like we all rebelled and didnt listen to Moses and had to wander in the wilderness for 40 years before getting back to the starting point. After the hike we waited for the bus back. But we noticed so many people at the bus stop and more and more people coming to the bus stop. We waited and didnt see any bus coming. We figured we dont have a chance to get on the bus even if it comes. Again, the group asked the group leader to give up waiting and walk to the next stop. After we started walking to the next stop, we saw bus after bus coming, and at least 2 empty buses. I told the leader now this is like Aaron listening to the people and making the golden calves. Thank You Lord for the fun and learning experiences. May You continue to bless my journey and help me listen to the spiritual leaders You put in my life. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the special conference last week. I learned that the breakthrough happens when we dont give up until it happens. Its so simple, yet its profound. Also, I am reminded to fervently pray despite the situation. You reminded me of the joy of my salvation. May You continue to restore the joy of my salvation and my strength. May You bless this weekend trip as I join the small group on a camping trip to Yosemite. May You prepare me for the mission trip coming up. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Hello Friend,

At just before 2 am on Monday morning, the Senate finally overcame months upon months of GOP roadblocks on healthcare reform, and we will pass a bill in the next couple of days.

You and I have traveled some rocky roads together the years when we were buried in the minority -- you know that vote would've been impossible two years ago and unthinkable four years ago. Now, the GOP is so desperate to stop our progress, before that vote Republican Senator Tom Coburn literally called on supporters to pray for some Democratic Senator not to be able to make it to the Capitol for the vote.

And already, Newt Gingrich proclaimed, "When we get a majority, we're repealing the whole thing."

Sarah Palin is out raising money for Republican Senate candidates, and Glenn Beck is still twisting the facts to try to whip people up.

We can't let them do this. We need to not only keep the gains we've made, but expand them.

Can you contribute to three great progressives to make that happen?

Kendrick Meek in Florida, Paul Hodes in New Hampshire, and Lee Fisher in Ohio all stood with us in 2004, and they are fighting for us now. They all supported a strong public option in the health care fight, and all stand up for real clean energy reform.

And they're all running in seats currently held by Republicans. Just imagine the change that will bring to the Senate, replacing three Republicans with three great progressives.

They all can win, but it won't be easy. Sarah Palin is already helping Lee Fisher's opponent, former Bush aide Rob Portman. And she'll surely be working hard against Kendrick and Paul, as well. These are tough battlegrounds, but they are all in states that voted for Barack Obama, so with your help, we can win them.

So please contribute $25, $50, or $100 right now and keep fighting for progressive values.

We're changing things in Washington, and we need to keep it up. Thanks for all you've done to get us this far.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

President's Message of WBTI for New Year's Day, 2008
Creative innovation and entrepreneurial spirit have been two scientific methodology and stratagems for the prosperity and development of information technology and business in America. The late Dr. Peter F. Drucker inspired us that: Innovation is very important. No good business can survive without successful innovation during a period of time! He emphazised the innovative marketing for businesses and institutions. With our Advisory Board and Faculty Members, we initiate, develop, and implement it together with the brilliance of Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Among the YouTub, Facebook, Wikipedia, and others, we have a difference. We help promote the visibility and popularlity locally, nationally, and internationally for people, cities, and projects. Everybody may like to share a wish and practice that, preparation plus opportunity can bring us a luck.

For a special institute like ours, the integration of ingenuity, entrepreneurship, integrity, and modern management is not asking for what we may get but for what we may influence. The influence has been positive and righteous to our people and communities.

For these fifteen years, it is our honor to assist U. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, Senator and Majority Leader of the U. S. Senate Harry Reid, and among others to become the great contemporary heroes in America.

Reid wbti, Chao wbti, Berkley wbti, Gibbons wbti, Gore wbti: Why Harry, Elaine, Shelley, Jim, and Al are so famous with WBTI? Ingenuity, innovation, integrity, and diligent work can bring us a miracle! Ans: (by a little girl and boy with a laptop computer under many beautiful palm trees beside the Sea of Galilee) "Ask Google, Yahoo, and MSN!"

[[[ 112707-8007 Tyrrell wbti: "The great Winston Churchill said, 'We all make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.' Tony, I know that you like to exemplify this inspiration same as it's my driving force by which I start out each day." ]]]

We all came to learn in America. With Harvard, Princeton, Pepperdine, and among others, we belong to a family of alumni associations. The angel came, influenced, and saved. She is the hero. A thing of peace with love is the joy of people on our beautiful earth!

To serve and help others with a gracious heart will bring us a lifetime happiness of learning!

In righteousness we shall be established. In this 21th Century new era and society, we need economic growth, but we also need to establish and promote creativity, fairness and Justice, serve and love, educational knowledge, and spirit engineering. We wish and affirm that a pure spring may prosper and enrich our splendid and golden country through: the elegant properties of freedom, democracy, entrepreneurship, and justice; the power of public service that based on 'Knowledge is the power of righteousness!'; the advancement of technology, innovation, and civilization; and the spirit that 'Knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service!'

Judy and I thank heartily the advice, contribution, and cooperation of all our Boards and Faculty members and Asian American Community. The sky is all beautiful in Nevada, California, and Texas today! Wish everybody a joyful, lucky, healthy, and prosperous future in these coming splendid and hopeful days!

Happy New Year!!!

"From now on, any definition of a successful life must include serving others," said 41st U. S. President George Bush. We certainly believe Alan Loy McGinnis that there is no more noble occupation in the world than to assit another human being---to help someone succeed. Management is nothing more than to motivating other individuals. We have put more emphasis on the power of positive praise. To lead is to serve, to give, and to achieve together with a sincere heart and love.

One of the functions of WBTI has a long times been to honor and celebrate the people and programs which may promote the quality of living for our residents and visitors of Nevada, California, and among others. The interstate perspectives of WBTI have brought with potentiality for the prosperity of more organiztions and people. We have recruited multi-media in English and Chinese to publish ou articles for many achieved and important individualas and projets. Our mutual cooperation and development between the officials and people will bring us a peaceful, happy, and healthy community.

The main mission of our organization is to encourage and promote academic research, community service, humane spirit, and educational programs.

During the past many years, our efforts have been extended to launch and participate events and projects for the development and cooperation of tourism, education, business, and culture.

The parallel practice of both the positive thinking and love in action through the skills with good personal traits such as enthusiam, belief, intellegence, creativity, judgment, liveliness, vision, courage, desire to excel, and persistence, will help people pursue rich, happier, and successful life. One of my philosophy of management for many years teaching in the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chengchi University and National Chunghsing University was to enphasize "the reaching of peak management achievement through successful work performance both on good production and human relations." With also this value of administration, WBTI is launching for another hopeful year.

Washington Business and Technology Institute should be credited due to our remarkable leadership and our hardworking members. WBTI is neither made up of statues or fountains, nor landsacapes or waterscapes. Rather, WBTI is made up of actual hardworking and dedicated persons -- its faculty, advisory members, administrators and numerous friends and allies among the communities.

"Asian Pacific American have made profound contributions to American life, including the arts, economy, education, science, technology, politics, and sport. This community was here to help build trascontinental railroad, to serve in the Civil War, and to develop the latest Internet technology. I'm pleased to assure all you leaders of the community here today that I'll continue working to preserve and advance the heritage and value of Asian Americans. I'll put my effort to reach out and address issues of importance to the Asian American community, including the economy, education, safety, racial profiling, and hate crime, and immigration, among others. I'd like also to show my appreciation of all your accomplishments and contributions to the American way of life and your oustanding participation in the political, business , and educational processes. It's my pleasure to accept the honor as Professor of Administrative Strategies of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration of Washington Business and Technology Institute," said Harry Reid, U. S. Senator and Assistant Democratic Leader (now Majority Leader) of the U. S. Senate at Asian American Leaders Tea with United States Senator Harry Reid on May 31, 2003 at Korean Garden B. B. Q. House in Las Vegas.

Though our resources were limited, we have innovated and encouraged good idea for program and event to improve the quality of life of all our residents and visitors of Nevada and California. United we stand, not just for our Asian Community only but for all our people and nation as a whole. Asian Community has won recognition for contribution to Nevada and California by American Mainstream. The main reason for this recognition is the great and cooperative wisdom and effort that the Asian communities have continuously participated and offered to the mainstream society.

Wish you a Happy New Year!

President's 2006 New Year Message
Whether you are man or woman, each of us have the instinct to travel. We live in this world for a good purpose, not "to have and to hold", but "to give and to serve others." We help others as if we need to continue to pay rent for our time here on earth. Those who "pay rent" by serving those in need of our assistance, are the individuals who are indeed most happy and at peace.

Since being established on January 8, 1996, the distringuished officers and members of the Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) have persevered with a fiery spirit to serve its purpose in helping the community. We have endured and weathered many obstacles, and miraculously we have survived and grown into a strong organization.

WBTI formulated and implemented several important projects in 2005. WBTI also assisted several associations and organizations in planning and conducting successful parties and events. This is evidenced by the more than 12 awards and proclamations received from the State of Nevada, Clark County, U. S. Senators and Congressmen and other high-ranking members of the community.

Innovation is the key to success. Managers are constantly searching the globe for new ideas. Modern companies view information and technology (IT) as a major competitive differentiator. Strategic businesses emphasize the use of information technology for effective management. International companies develop their global IT platforms by integrating hardware, software and Internet-based network architecture worldwide. Commuunication technology, such as teleconferencing and computer networks, are making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on a single project or multiple projects.

Many business are becoming global and moving toward transnational e-business strategies in which they
integrate the worldwide business activities between their subsidiaries and headquarters. In the coming year, 2006, WBTI will continue to monitor and promote further innovative activities in the international business arena.

Washington Business and Technology Institute should be credited due to our remarkable leadership and our hardworking members. WBTI is neither made up of statues or fountains, nor landsacapes or waterscapes. Rather, WBTI is made up of actual hardworking and dedicated persons -- its faculty, advisory members, administrators and numerous friends and allies within the community.

Many thanks to the Las Vegas Review-Journal for providing WBTI with a website so that we can continue to communicate easily and expeditiously. You're on Google.com and Google.cn, if you're on Washington
Business and Technology Institute's website (http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti)" [WBTI]. Google.com and Google.cn are published approximately every ten days for most of the sections of this website.

For many years, one of WBTI's most important functions is to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of certain individuals. In 2005, we have had the pleasure to honor several individuals who have made outstanding accomplishments in many special fields.

President Dr. Andrew K. Benton of Pepperdine University inspired us by the following: "Reaching up, reaching
beyond, always pressing forward; this is the passion of the human spirit." We are certainly being challenged! At the beginging of this splendid year, I wish everybody success in their endeavors, prosperity, good health and a happy life!

Jeremiah Workman
U.S. Marine Corps / Navy Cross
Badly outnumbered by violent insurgents, he led the rescue
of five trapped fellow Marines
By James C. Roberts
Stephens Media LLC 2009

As he lay exhausted and barely conscious on the blood-soaked stone floor of a Fallujah house, his lungs begging for oxygen that had been sucked out by a grenades concussion, Cpl. Jeremiah Workman thought the end was near.

I felt like I was in a dream, Workman recalled. The last of my strength was draining away. I tried to get up but fell face down in the broken glass on the floor. My arms and hands were covered with blood. I thought I was dying. It just got black, and I thought that was death.

As he was drifting off, Workman was awakened by the voice of Maj. Todd Desgrosseilliers, the battalion executive officer, who was dragging him to safety. Lets go, Marine! Desgrosseilliers shouted. Were getting out NOW!

The date was Dec. 23, 2004. Just hours earlier, Workmans unit, Mortar Platoon, Weapons Company, 5th Marine Regiment, 3rd Battalion, was mopping up, searching for weapons caches and booby traps in a Fallujah neighborhood after U.S. forces had subdued insurgents in Operation Phantom Fury, the second Battle of Fallujah.

Suddenly, shots rang out from a house across the street, and gray and white smoke of gunfire poured from windows on the second floor. Five Marines from Workmans platoon had entered a house defended by an estimated 40 heavily armed insurgents. Badly outnumbered, the Marines were trapped.

I said, We gotta go get those guys, Workman said.

Workman and seven others in the squad entered the house and were met by a hail of bullets from the second floor. The wall behind the staircase was just about falling apart from all the bullets that were shooting around, he said.

Making his way up the staircase, Workman spied the trapped Marines but had to retreat back down. Trying again, the would-be rescuers advanced up the stairs.

We fought back and forth, Workman recalled. There was a lot of firepower coming out of the bedrooms. Then a grenade bounced out of a bedroom and toward the Marines.

Workman raised his leg to shield himself. I remember there was a lot of flame that lit the room, he said. I felt like someone hit me in the leg with a ball bat. I heard guys yell. They had been hit.

Though peppered with shrapnel, the Marines kept fighting until they ran out of ammunition and had to leave the house, again under heavy fire.

Marines were running back to get ammo, Workman said. Thats when I saw one Marine stagger out of the neighboring yard. He looked a zombie, covered with blood. He fell to his knees and just fell over. The Marine had jumped out of the house.

Workman pulled the man on his back and half-carried, half-dragged him out of the yard, evading sniper fire richocheting off the sidewalk.

I dragged him about 75 yards, Workman said, but it felt like 200 miles. I was already dehydrated. I was just hurting.

Workman wrote afterward that his stomach felt like Ive got the worst case of the flu imaginable. Weve been fighting for over two hours in hundred-plus heat, running and fighting, getting grenaded and suffering from smoke inhalation. Ive never felt this level of complete fatigue, utter exhaustion.

At the casualty collection point, Workman spied two dead Marines lying in the back of a vehicle, one of them from his squad. It was the first time he had seen a dead Marine.

It was like someone flipped a switch on me. I went into a rage, Workman said. I wanted to kill every insurgent in the house.

Workman and three others rushed the house a third time. Again they were met with a slam of automatic weapons fire, and this time three of the insurgents charged into the Marines. The jihadists were repelled, peppered with rifle fire.

But out of the smoke came yet another grenade, which knocked Workman down. Exhausted, dazed and dehydrated, Workman thought his days were done until Desgrosseilliers shook him and pulled him up.

He grabbed me by my Kevlar, cause I really couldnt move, Workman said. I was puking all over you know, blood because I was so dehydrated. He grabbed me by my helmet and dragged me out of the house.

Two of the trapped Marines were killed in the fight. Their bodies were dropped out of the house by Marines who escaped by jumping out after them. A third Marine, from Workmans unit, also was killed.

With the Marines evacuated, an arriving M1 tank finally blasted the second floor of the house, and aerial bombs finished leveling the building.

Workmans actions that day contributed to the killing of 24 insurgents and the rescue of the survivors, the Marine Corps said when it awarded him the Navy Cross, its second-highest award for combat valor.

He has since written a book, Shadow of the Sword, recounting the fight and his battles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the years that have followed.

James C. Roberts is president of the American Veterans Center. From 1968 to 1971 he served as a naval officer aboard the destroyer USS Henderson.

Cpl. Jeremiah Workman's interest in the Marines dates to his high school days when he first saw Marine recruiters. "I was just mesmerized," he said. "Each time they came back I would pay attention. It was the way they walked, the way they carried themselves, the way they talked ... it was impressive to me." (Photo courtesy of Random House)
