Refresh Your Retro Resume
By Lucille Pearson
As a career coach and resume writer for Pepperdine, I am always on the look out for innovative and creative tools to help students and alumni create the most competitive, polished resumes possible. I recently learned about a new resource called VisualCV.com that I think has the potential to be a great job search tool.
We know that a potential employer makes a decision to interview you, or not, based on your resume. A traditional resume is a static document, and unfortunately, too many resumes are boring. With VisualCV, you create an online interactive portfolio that can tell your story by showcasing work samples, presentations, publications, and additional information.
It is the first website I’ve seen that allows you to do this all in one place, with privacy and control. And it is free.
Here is what I like about it:
Visually-rich format which is more compelling than a traditional resume.
Create multiple versions for different audiences and you control who sees what.
Gives job seekers the ability to stand out in the crowd by showcasing credentials and achievements, awards, licenses, accolades or testimonials.
Members of VisualCV.com can passively and privately register their interest with a particular company by sharing a VisualCV with a company member of the system, making it possible for a candidate to express interest in a company without having to become a jobseeker.
You have your own URL and can link it as a website to your cover letter, Facebook, LinkedIn profiles, etc.
Offers greater depth, breadth and substance for both job seekers and company recruiters.
Take a look and see what you think. Here is an example of a recent full-time MBA’s VirtualCV: http://www.visualcv.com/heathercrawford. If you’re interested in more information, click here http://www.visualcv.com/www/what_is_visualcv/.
No other site that I’ve seen has combined all of this capability into a single tool. This is not a replacement for your traditional resume, but you may want to consider adding it to your self-marketing repertoire.
Lucille Sanchez Pearson is the founder and president of Global Resources, Ltd. You can read about her company on her VisualCV - http://www.visualcv.com/premier/globalresources.

success story - in your words
by John Santos, MBA 2005
I had four reasons for wanting to earn an MBA: to provide diversification to my mechanical engineering background, distinguish myself from other mechanical engineers, have marketability in the future where I will have to search for a new position, and apply the knowledge gained toward entrepreneurial endeavors.
Soon after earning my MBA in 2005, I was selected to participate in a leadership training course provided by WorleyParsons, the engineering services company I was with at the time. The program included learning about one's strengths, weaknesses, and personality type. I always knew engineering was not quite a fit for me and discovered in this program that my personality type was more in tune with a career in psychology, counseling, and health care - areas that I did feel resonated more with me.
This prompted me to do some career exploration and eventually led me to life coaching. Wow! From engineer to life coach; from technical to emotional!
I went for it and completed formal training in 2007 with CTI, The Coaches Training Institute.
During this same year of attending coach training, a former employer, knowing I had earned an MBA, asked me to return as a Discipline Lead Engineer with Fluor Corporation, leading a team of mechanical engineers. Talk about bridging the gap! My team consists of both new graduates and very seasoned senior engineers - engineers just starting their careers and those looking forward to retirement.
I accepted the challenge of leading a diverse group composed of both new graduates and seasoned senior engineers. I get to apply my mechanical engineering knowledge, MBA experience, and life coach training to lead, encourage teamwork and knowledge sharing, and develop all around career/life fulfillment among team members. By listening and having a genuine interest in what my team members want to accomplish, they feel valued and are more engaged in being a productive team member. And, by applying the coach's perspective that all team members are creative, resourceful and whole, leading a team is more productive and effective.
I also established my own life coaching practice, working with engineers and those in other technical fields, to help them accomplish their own goals, as I did. Looking at my career growth over the years, I see that getting my MBA was a great step in the right direction. Now I can provide supportive coaching for individuals wanting to make positive change in their lives.*8
