A few weeks ago I detailed our strategic plan called Distinctive Leadership 2015. I am excited to now share that we are taking a significant step toward enriching student learning, one of the five key objectives guiding our vision for the Graziadio School. We have re-tooled and expanded the entrepreneurship courses we offer and revitalized the entrepreneurship emphasis/concentration. This bold new direction is designed to help MBAs translate a creative vision into a real business that both produces wealth and allows students to express their personal values.

This fall, we are introducing the six part entrepreneurship emphasis/concentration to Full-time MBAs in Malibu and Fully Employed MBAs at the West Los Angeles Graduate Campus. In the spring courses will start at the Irvine Graduate Campus with other campuses to follow.

What sets the entrepreneurship emphasis/concentration apart is the approach. Programs at other business schools start with courses focused on market feasibility or business planning. Often the student抯 underlying business idea is not fully examined until late in the curriculum or they settle on a business idea that assumes profitability, but is neither personally meaningful nor well-conceived.

As designed by Professor Larry Cox, who joined the faculty last fall, our program will start with the genesis of the idea. Students will not be expected to show up the first day of class with a new business concept. Instead, they will be immersed in a program that focuses on unlocking their creativity and uncovering solutions to problems that generate personally compelling ideas with large market potential. This approach ensures ideas are first strong candidates for potential ventures before students begin the analysis necessary to develop a viable business plan.

Students will first have to complete a session in the new 揙pportunities in Entrepreneurship?Seminar Series. Each session in the series explores a cutting-edge technology or potential applications for new products and services in a different industry or field of study, such as clean tech, social entrepreneurship, entertainment, life sciences, and eCommerce. The seminars help students find those personally compelling, high-potential ideas for a new business.

Students then progress through successive courses that cover assessing the market and financing, marketing and structuring a viable business. The result will be a business plan validated by a panel of angel and venture capital investors.

Dr. Larry Cox has led this re-design. Previously, he served as director of the top 10 ranked Entrepreneurship Center at Ball State University. We are fortunate to benefit from his experience and I am looking forward to the dynamic new business plans the entrepreneurship emphasis/concentration will generate. Many of these plans I hope will be leading contenders in future Business Plan Competitions.

Entrepreneurial spirit is the legacy of both University founder George Pepperdine and the business school抯 namesake George Graziadio. The new entrepreneurship emphasis/concentration represents an investment in the School抯 future杋n its distinctive leadership. It is only fitting that it also honors the heritage of these two great patrons.

Seniors United was Created as an inspirational medium for seniors. It抯 purpose is to educate, promote and protect the rights of seniors.

The needs of seniors differ from younger citizens.

It is important to have an organization devoted to our place in the community and to promote it抯 continued growth.

The members of Seniors United want to share experiences with others.

Nonpartisan and nonsectarian, we are very actively involved in the political structure of our state and country.

Forums are varied to benefit the needs of the community and to discuss political issues. Guest speakers come from all areas.

It is with pride that we are seniors and are doubly proud to be members of Seniors United.

The pride continues in our many accomplishments and in the good name we have established in the community.

Our goal is to develop plans for a great tomorrow and to make it happen.

Everyone is welcome, young to old and from every walk of life.

***** There can be no doubt that our state and nation are facing an economic crisis worse than we could have ever imagined. Our state has a revenue shortfall of more than $2 billion or 37%, the highest percentage in the nation.

In Carson City , we are working hard to help Nevadans weather this economic crisis, to make changes in the way our state operates so we never find ourselves in these dire economic straits again, and to take steps to help solve real problems facing Nevadans.

Let me fill you in on a few things we are doing for senior citizens.

First, we are carefully reviewing the Governor抯 proposed budget to determine what we can cut, what we can reform and what we must save. We have found many of the proposed cuts unacceptable, including cuts to health care and senior services and programs with a track record of success at keeping seniors in their own homes and out of nursing homes.

We are also enacting new patient safeguards in the aftermath of last year抯 Hepatitis C health care crisis in Southern Nevada . These measures include improved inspections and licensing requirements for doctors offices and clinics, more authority for the Health Division to respond to a health care crisis and temporarily close unsafe facilities, and whistleblower protection for nurses and doctors who report unsafe practices.

We are also moving forward on an innovative program to keep seniors in their own homes called PACE, which is short for Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly.

The PACE program works to give seniors more choices by combining federal Medicare dollars with state Medicaid funds or an individual抯 own personal resources to deliver more comprehensive services to seniors.

These services might include adult day care, home-based meals, prescription drugs and even recreational therapy to promote quality of life for seniors struggling to remain independent.

President Ma Meets City of Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert

President Ma Ying-jeou met with the Mayor of the City of Dallas, Texas, Tom Leppert and Mrs. Leppert on the afternoon of April 28 at the Presidential Office and extended a welcome to the couple on their visit to Taiwan.

President Ma noted that Dallas is the ninth largest city in the United States. It is a hub for the high-tech sector and is part of a metropolitan area that includes the neighboring city of Fort Worth and has a population of over six million people. Dallas is one of the most important cities in the southern part of the United States and it maintains a sister city arrangement with Taipei City. The president said that many mayors from Dallas have visited Taipei over the years and he is delighted to welcome Mayor Leppert and his delegation to Taiwan on this visit to attend the 2009 International Conference on Aerotropolis.

President Ma commented that Dallas is an important transshipment center in the southern part of the United States. Mayor Leppert has a thorough understanding of what an aerotropolis is, he said. The president said he hopes that in the future China Airlines or EVA Airways will be able to fly directly to Dallas from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. We would be pleased to see this kind of development and also hope to further foster relations between Taiwan and Dallas, he said. At present, annual trade between Dallas and Taiwan stands at about US$4 billion. This amount is larger than the volume of trade between Taiwan and many countries, thereby highlighting the economic strength of Dallas. President Ma said he is confident that there is even more room for development between the two sides.

The president told Mayor Leppert that the ROC (Taiwan) has approached the US government to seek visa-free courtesies for its nationals when they travel to the United States. Taiwan also is looking to sign an extradition treaty with the United States, he said. It is expected that these measures would promote more tourism to the United States and enable the repatriation of criminals who have fled to the United States from Taiwan. In addition, the ROC (Taiwan) also hopes that there will be an opportunity to sign a free trade agreement with the United States in the future, the president said. President Ma expressed Taiwan's desire to expand economic cooperation with nations throughout the world. It is with this in mind that Taiwan is pursuing an economic cooperation framework agreement with mainland China. This sort of agreement is expected to pave the way for the establishment of a free trade zone and further expand Taiwan's contacts with the rest of the world, he said.

It's our pleasure to post a short essay from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren:

In 1931, historian and Pulitzer prize winner James Truslow Adams coined the phrase "The American Dream" in a treatise called The Epic of America. This familiar phrase has often been invoked by writers, philosophers, and politicians to explain their own convictions. It has become a prevailing justification for individual dreams and pursuits. "There are those who will reply that freedom of man and mind is nothing but a dream," said Archibald MacLeish. "They are right. It is. It is the American Dream."

Taking that one step further, James Allen says, "Dreams are the seedlings of reality."
The American Dream is a seedling of reality waiting to be nurtured, fertilized, and harvested by those with the courage to pursue it.*3

Energy chief launches $305 million plan on energy frontier

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar launched a plan Saturday to spend $305 million for creating jobs on what he called the public lands' "renewable energy frontier" to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil while at the same time restoring landscapes and wildlife habitat.

Standing in a sun-drenched parking lot at Red Rock Canyon's fire station with a solar panel behind him, Salazar said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid "really believes that Nevada is going to be at the point of the spear in terms of moving this country forward with a whole new renewable energy agenda."

"That work we will do here on solar and geothermal and wind energy is going to be exemplary for the rest of the nation as we take the moonshot on the new energy frontier and tackle the realities of climate change," Salazar said.

The Interior Department will manage $3 billion in investments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed by President Barack Obama. The president's goal is to invest $150 billion over the next decade to speed up renewable energy development.

Bureau of Land Management stimulus funding in Nevada this year will provide $26.4 million for more than 40 projects, including renewable energy, habitat restoration, and building and restoring roads, bridges and trails.

Salazar said the monies are "going to create jobs to get our economy out of the ditch. And second of all, we're going to invest in projects that are going to bring out long-term sustainability to these assets of America and to the initiatives we have."

The Obama administration aims to have 10 percent of the nation's electricity generated from renewable resources by 2012 and 25 percent by 2025.

In all, $41 million authorized under the stimulus act will be spent on 65 BLM projects to spur large-scale production of solar, wind and geothermal energy, in addition to siting transmission lines on public lands to support renewable energy development.

After his announcement to a gathering of BLM employees, conservationists, some local officials and members of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe, Salazar said he met early Saturday with representatives from more than a dozen solar companies.

He said they have financing for many projects in Nevada, Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado, "and they want to get moving on those projects" but the BLM has a backlog for processing applications.

There are 241 applications for wind projects and 199 for solar projects that are in various stages of processing.

Salazar said the BLM plans to open special offices in Nevada and other Western states to accelerate processing renewable energy permit applications.

Groundbreaking on some of those projects will occur next year, he said.

"So we are putting the pedal to the metal to get it done," he said.

Salazar said BLM stimulus funding will translate to more private sector jobs including those for contractors to install solar panels at BLM facilities, including the fire station for Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

"I think there are literally millions of jobs that can be created around the country with respect to renewable energy," he said.

"Overall what we expect from the Department of Interior is somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 jobs around the country with the total investment we're making," he said.

As part of the $305 million for BLM recovery investments, 650 projects across the nation will restore landscapes and watersheds, protect wildlife habitat, spur renewable energy development, and clean up abandoned mining sites.
