Dear Church Family,

Greetings in Jesus' name! Wow team members, you never cease to amaze. Memorial services on Sunday were off the hook. So many veterans and families who lost their family members in war were so blessed.*1 A big thank you to Adam, Pastor Joel, Harry, Geno, Robert, Robyn, and so many more. It was a great event.

***** "....... ... " ---??? *101

As I write this letter, I am preparing to leave for France. Wow! Please pray for us. The historic meetings that are planned need your support in the prayer realm. The first Call in Paris and the first leadership meeting with John Maxwell courses will surely have generational repercussions.*2

Denise and I will also be leaving for meetings in Israel and Switzerland. Ive never been to Israel but I hope to gather enough information to bring you with me in 2010 or 2011. Lord willing.

While Im gone, Sergio Scataglini will be ministering on Sundays, and so many other exciting things will touch your life throughout the week. Just check ICLV.com for all the great opportunities for growth, blessings and service.*3

mike --

I am proud to announce my nominee for the next Justice of the United States Supreme Court: Judge Sonia Sotomayor.*1

This decision affects us all -- and so it must involve us all. I've recorded a special message to personally introduce Judge Sotomayor and explain why I'm so confident she will make an excellent Justice.

***** "....... ... ." ??? *101

Please watch the video, and then pass this note on to friends and family to include them in this historic moment.

Judge Sotomayor has lived the America Dream. Born and raised in a South Bronx housing project, she distinguished herself in academia and then as a hard-charging New York District Attorney.*2

Judge Sotomayor has gone on to earn bipartisan acclaim as one of America's finest legal minds. As a Supreme Court Justice, she would bring more federal judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any Justice in 100 years. Judge Sotomayor would show fidelity to our Constitution and draw on a common-sense understanding of how the law affects our day-to-day lives.

***** "....... ." ---??? *107

A nomination for a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land is one of the most important decisions a President can make. And the discussions that follow will be among the most important we have as a nation. You can begin the conversation today by watching this special message and then passing it on:

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

***** They've been at shopping centers and supermarkets around Henderson the past few weekends. Like many others from veterans organizations, they'll be there today seeking donations for red poppies, symbolic of the Memorial Day tradition from World War I.*1

All the money that volunteers from Jewish War Veterans Post 65 rake in will go to help fellow veterans.

***** "....... ... ." ---??? *105

***** Much of it this year, some $4,000, will go to support next month's "Welcome Home" event sanctioned by the Department of Veterans Affairs to help those who served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"What happens is many of the veterans that come back from these wars go through mental trauma, depression and anxiety," said Jack Cohen, Post 65 adjutant and point man for the "Welcome Home" event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 5 at the Gold Coast.

"Some have lost their jobs, their homes, their wives," he said Thursday. "We want to see if we can head them toward a better life."

Cohen said he doesn't want to see these new veterans joining the thousands of homeless veterans on the streets of Las Vegas.

"If we can help one, 10, two or 20, then we have accomplished our goal," he said.

The purpose of the "Welcome Home" event is to let veterans of the recent wars know what opportunities are available for them and how the VA and other service organizations can help in seeking medical and other benefits to which they are entitled.

In all there will be up to 50 vendors on hand ranging from disability advocates to representatives specializing in housing, education and employment opportunities to counselors on alcohol and drug abuse and domestic violence.

While the event targets the 2,500 local veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, an invitation is also extended to combat veterans from the Persian Gulf, Vietnam and Korean wars, said Catherine Sines, manager for the Veterans Affairs' OEF/OIF program in Southern Nevada.

Sines expects thousands of veterans will attend. In all, more than 339,000 veterans live in Nevada, with most of them in Southern Nevada.

"It looks to us like it's going to be a huge celebration," she said.

Cohen discussed the "Welcome Home" event along with Post Commander Ed Kranson and Senior Vice Commander Selwyn Goldberg where the post meets at Wildhorse Golf Club in Henderson.

All three spoke proudly about their military service and their dedication to helping fellow veterans, especially those who are struggling to stay out of the ranks of the homeless, those who have lost limbs and those at the veterans home in Boulder City.

They also offered their thoughts on Memorial Day.

Goldberg, the oldest at 76, was a U.S. Army sniper attached to Turkish tank division in Korea from 1951 to 1953.

Goldberg said he was proud to have been able to serve as a soldier who fought for freedom in a foreign land.

Today, he will be thinking about U.S. troops who are in Iraq and Afghanistan and hoping they can come home and let the armies of those countries fight their wars.

"I don't think we should be there," he said.

Kranson, 71, served active duty in the Navy from 1956 to 1957 and was a Naval reservist. His duties ranged from bookkeeping and supplying reservists with uniforms and sea bags to manning a battle station on a destroyer as a projectile loader for a large gun.

"My thoughts are going to be with our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq," Kranson said, "and pray that they are safe and will come home, and that these conflicts will end once and for all and we have peace."

Cohen, 69, served in Germany driving tanks for the Army from 1958 to 1962. He, too, wants "peace forever. It's a dream but not an impossibility."

As for the ongoing wars, he said "There's no answer as to why we're there. The question is what are we going to do while we're there. If we want the war to end, then treat it as a war." *3

Hillary Rodham Clinton surprises Yale graduates!
By Katie Nelson

**__**

***** Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made a surprise return to her alma mater on Monday, picking up an honorary degree from Yale University 36 years after earning her law degree from the Ivy League school.*1

Graduates celebrating commencement at Yale erupted in cheers as Clinton was introduced. In keeping with Yale tradition, the names of honorary degree recipients are a closely held secret, although word began trickling out Sunday of Clinton's participation.

***** "....... ... ." ---??? *1007

None of the 10 honorary degree recipients spoke during the morning ceremony held for the university at large, where Yale handed out 2,868 undergraduate and graduate degrees. It was the school's 308th commencement ceremony.

Clinton did speak for about five minutes during the Yale Law School's separate commencement event held in the early afternoon. There, the 60-year-old Clinton reminisced about her days at Yale, saying the law school was an "encampment for protests and frivolity" when she arrived in the fall of 1969.

She met her future husband, Bill Clinton, at the school the following year, 22 years before he was elected the nation's 42nd president.*2

She expressed hope that every graduate would "use every creative gene you have" in order to work "on behalf of the public good."

Clinton drew laughs from the crowd when she jokingly apologized for taking Yale Law School Dean Harold Hongju Koh "away from the law school and putting him to work in Washington." Koh was nominated by President Barack Obama to be legal adviser to the State Department, and remains a possible nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a nod to the rough job market, Clinton also urged the new law school graduates to apply for work in the Obama administration, at the State Department and with the United States Agency for International Development.

***** "....... ... ." ---??? *101

Koh said after the law school ceremony he hoped his students learned from Clinton "what is possible to achieve in one lifetime."

"Everyone who got the honorary degrees were in these seats not that long ago," Koh said. "And you know, what they know is, they could be a mother, a lawyer and U.S. senator, Secretary of State, presidential candidate. There's no limit. That's what they should think. There's no limit to what they can do."

Actress and activist Mia Farrow was among the parents in the audience who heard Clinton speak. Ronan, Farrow's 21-year-old son with director Woody Allen, completed a law degree and is currently going through the security clearance process to work in the Obama administration, she said.

"It was inspiring and wonderful to have a son graduating. And to hear those words (from Clinton) and to see a path, a clear path ahead. He's joining government and this is a proud day for all the parents here," she said.

Erin Phillips, 24, is headed to Boston to clerk for a federal district court judge, and was also inspired by Clinton's visit.

"We heard some rumors last night that she was coming. I was really excited," Phillips said after the ceremony. "I think it meant a lot and I think everyone has been kind of uniformly thrilled about it. It was a nice surprise."

Clinton was last in New Haven in 2008, when she visited Yale the day before the Connecticut presidential primary and her own failed presidential bid. She then fondly recalled her days attending Yale Law School and her early career as a child advocate at the Yale Child Study Center.

She spoke to Yale graduates once before, in 1991 when she gave the traditional Class Day speech, which is the major address to graduating seniors held the day before commencement. This year's Class Day address was delivered Sunday by author Christopher Buckley, a 1975 Yale graduate.

Sculptor Richard Serra, Nobel Prize-winning economist Thomas Schelling and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer John McPhee were among the others receiving honorary degrees from the university Monday.*3

***** U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, long a fierce critic of Beijing, toured China's financial capital on Monday on a visit focused on environmental issues rather than human rights, though her presence emboldened protesters.*1

Pelosi took a low-key approach as she prepared for meetings in Beijing just days ahead of the 20th anniversary of the 1989 crackdown on the Tiananmen Square democracy protests.

The apparent shift approach dovetails with President Barack Obama's new emphasis on engagement with Beijing, rather than confrontation over its human rights record. Visits by Pelosi and other senior U.S. figures have been aimed at highlighting cooperation between the two countries on a slew of issues.

Still, the leading Democratic lawmaker's reputation as a strong human rights defender galvanized petitioners in Beijing, where several hundreds gathered Monday morning near the capital's South Railway Station to air their grievances. Dozens of police stood guard and most protesters were kept behind police lines.

While many complaints were about individual cases, photos posted on the Chinese-language Web site Boxun.com, a U.S.-hosted Web site banned in China, showed one group of demonstrators holding up a black-and-white cloth banner that said: "Welcome Pelosi. Pay close attention to human rights. SOS."

Speaking to U.S. business figures Monday in Shanghai, Pelosi noted her commitment to human rights issues over the years.

During a 1991 visit to Beijing, the Democrat from California unfurled a banner that read "To those who died for democracy in China" in the square. Years later, she attempted to present human rights petitions to then-visiting President Hu Jintao. When Tibetans staged protests against Chinese rule last year, Pelosi visited their exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

"I will continue to speak out for human rights in China and around the world," Pelosi told members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.

"Indeed, protecting the environment is a human rights issue," she said according to a copy of the speech distributed to journalists. "We hope to send a clear message that transparency, accountability, enforcement, and respect for the rule of law are essential if we are to protect our planet," she added.

Pelosi did castigate North Korea after Pyongyang announced that it had successfully carried out an underground nuclear test, weeks after threatening to restart its rogue atomic program.

"If today's announcement is true, these tests would be a clear violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718, which requires that North Korea not conduct any further nuclear tests. Such action by North Korea is unacceptable and cause for great alarm," Pelosi said in a written statement.

Pelosi said she and other members of her delegation planned to urge Chinese leaders to use their influence to get the North to return to six-nation talks aimed at ending its nuclear program.*2

The lawmaker arrived over the weekend accompanied by a delegation of four Democrats and one Republican, all members of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. The main focus of their visit is the shared goal of promoting clean energy and combatting climate change.

***** "....... ." ---??? *1003

Pelosi met Monday with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng. The two exchanged pleasantries but made no substantive remarks before reporters. The delegation will later meet in Beijing with Hu and other leaders.

U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman and Democrat Sen. John Kerry is also in China, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will arrive next week. He is expected to reassure Beijing about the strength of the U.S. dollar and thus the value of China's vast holdings of U.S. Treasury notes.*3

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons appreciates offer, but declines momentary meeting with President!

***** Governor Jim Gibbons has rejected an offer to momentarily meet President Barack Obama while the President is in Las Vegas on Tuesday. White House staff offered Governor Gibbons the chance to greet President Obama at the airport. Governor Gibbons had asked President Obama to meet with the Governor and local business leaders to discuss improving tourism and business travel to Nevada.*1

~{!0~}While I appreciate the offer, I am not interested in a handshake and a hello from President Obama, I am interested in an apology and plan to undo the damage the President did,~{!1~} Gibbons said, ~{!0~}Working families are suffering because of the President~{!/~}s remarks, the President should retract his reckless statement about Las Vegas and make a public statement supporting business and tourist travel to Las Vegas and other destinations in the State of Nevada.~{!1~}

***** "....... ." ---??? *101

Earlier this year, the President told an audience in Elkhart, Indiana, ~{!0~}You can~{!/~}t get corporate jets. You can~{!/~}t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer~{!/~}s dime.~{!1~} That quote was seen by many as an insult to Las Vegas and as a message to companies across the Nation to stay away from Las Vegas for corporate meetings and conventions.

***** "....... ... ." ---??? *168

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reports over 400 conventions and business meetings scheduled to take place in Las Vegas recently have cancelled. These cancelled events translate into 111,800 guests in Las Vegas and over 250,000 ~{!0~}room-nights~{!1~}. The cancelled conventions and meetings have cost the Las Vegas economy over $100-million, not including gaming revenue.*2

~{!0~}President Obama is coming to Las Vegas to take millions of dollars in campaign cash for Senator Harry Reid, while the President~{!/~}s own words have hurt working families in Nevada and damaged the economy in Nevada for businesses large and small,~{!1~} Gibbons noted, ~{!0~}Both men should be ashamed because people are suffering through the depths of the recession while they practice the height of hypocrisy.~{!1~}

Governor Gibbons is also calling on Senator Reid to firmly ask President Obama to encourage Americans to consider America, including Las Vegas and Nevada, FIRST when planning their vacations and business meetings.*3

Explanations!

James 1:22-25

***** Once upon a time life was simple and uncomplicated. Oh sure, there were struggles and problems, but they weren't all that complex. Good and evil did battle with each other. So did willpower and laziness. Right fought against wrong in the main event and not too many folks remained neutral. There was a clear, unmistakable line between winning and losing . . . victory and defeat . . . accomplishment and failure . . . actual war between opposing forces and peace, real peace---not smoldering, game-playing peace.

***** "....... ... ." ---??? *101

Sometimes we hated ourselves and we openly confessed our guilt and shame. On other occasions we tightened our belts, did the hard thing, and we made it happen. We felt proud of our determination and we passed on that pride to our young. They even believed in us! A marriage was for keeps. A job was for work. A crime was for punishment. Irresponsibility was frowned on, a broken promise was inexcusable, adultery was a scandal, hardship was endured, extra effort was admired and applauded.

Then, ever so slowly, the fog rolled in.

All the evils of the world, once black as tar, turned strange shades of gray. Instead of our seeing them clearly as wrong or someone's fault, they became fuzzy . . . and ultimately "explainable." Which, being interpreted, means "excusable." And the outworking of all this is a remarkable twist, a subtle switching of roles.

It's now the guilty (you'll excuse the expression) who is more protected than the victim. It's the one who protests an act of violence who is frowned upon, not the doer of the deed. It's the guy who uses words like discipline and diligence and integrity and blame and shame who is the weirdo, not the one who has developed the scientific gift of explanation and rationalization.

"If a drunk driver kills my wife or cripples my kids, how dare I hate him? We all know alchoholism is a disease and nobody gets a disease on purpose. But if I do hate him and if I'm caught up with such rage that I kill the driver, you can't be angry with me. After all, wasn't I suffering from temporary insanity? (That's a brief disease . . . like the flu.)"

Explanations abound, everything from poor toilet training and unfair parents to oppressive work conditions and governmental rip-offs. Sometimes in my more maddening moments I entertain crazy "what if" ideas. What if we were suddenly stripped of our twenty-first century maladies and "scientific" explanations? What if there was a resurgence of such dated phrases as:

"I have decided to . . ."
"I will . . ."
"I will no longer . . ."
"I am wrong . . ."
"Starting today, I won't . . ."

That would mean saying farewell to foggy terms like:

"I am thinking about it . . ."
"I'm working on it . . ." and,
"Someday I plan to . . ."

which psychologists, pastors, and counselors worth their salt realize mean little more than, "I'm working out some great excuse for not doing it."

How do I know? I've learned those phrases, too! And occasionally, when I get cornered by a hard set of facts, I dip into my bag just like you do---especially if I'm not ready to come to terms with my own responsibility. Out come those handy little guilt-relieving "explanations."

Little by little I'm learning just how enamored I was of all those catch phrases that made me forget I was on a sinking ship.

Let me level with you. And I say this for one reason only---to encourage you to replace explanations with decisions and actions. If I had continued giving in to those lame excuses, my marriage would not have held together, my ministry would have become mediocre, I would never have finished one book I wanted to write, I would not have a close friend, I would have jumped from job to job because of the pressure, and I would still be a fat slob.

Jesus was right. After telling His disciples how to live fulfilled lives, He put the clincher on it by adding, "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them" (John 13:17, emphasis added).

Gore, others urge CEOs to back climate change deal!

***** COPENHAGEN ?Climate-change heavyweights U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and Nobel prize winner Al Gore urged more than 500 business leaders on Sunday to lend their corporate muscle to reaching a global deal on reducing greenhouse gases.

***** "....... ... ." ---Las Vegas City Mayor Oscar Goodman *107

The CEOs of PepsiCo, Nestle, BP and other of the world's major businesses began meeting in Copenhagen, where politicians will gather in December to negotiate a new U.N.-brokered climate treaty.

Despite the global financial crisis, both Ban and Gore said there was no time for delay in hashing out the specifics of how to cut greenhouse gases that contribute to warming the planet.

"We have to do it this year. Not next year. This year," Gore said. "The clock is ticking, because Mother Nature does not do bailouts."

The three-day World Business Summit on Climate Change is a precursor to the negotiations to determine what will succeed the Kyoto climate treaty that expires in 2012.

"Continuing to pour trillions of dollars into fossil-fuel subsidies is like investing in subprime real estate," Ban said. "Our carbon-based infrastructure is like a toxic asset that threatens the portfolio of global goods, from public health to food security."

A new global warming treaty would build on the Kyoto treaty's mixed success in requiring that 37 industrialized nations reduce greenhouse gas emissions an average of 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.

Gore said any of the ambitious treaty goals being discussed will depend on CEOs working out greener ways of doing business and governments reining in unrestricted pollution.

"The business community and the leaders of the world must go together to safeguard the world," he told a forum that drew even Queen Margrethe of Denmark.

About 300 anti-globalization activists marched Sunday toward a convention center, which was heavily guarded by police. No arrests were reported.

Erik Rasmussen, founder of the Copenhagen Climate Council that sponsored the meeting, said business leaders were discussing specific and binding targets for reducing greenhouse gases within 10 years and 20 years that would be announced at the end of the conference.

Anders Eldrup, CEO of Danish state-controlled oil and gas group DONG Energy, said businesses faced a big choice.

"There are two tracks being discussed now, one a tax on CO2 and a cap-and-trade," he said, leaning toward the carbon tax.

However, Connie Hedegaard, the Danish minister for climate and energy, told The Associated Press the most workable solution would be global limits on the pollution blamed for global warming, rather than an outright tax on carbon dioxide and other major industrial warming gases.

***** "....... ." ---U.S. Speaker of Congress Nancy Pelosi *1006

Hedegaard urged businesses to back such limits, called cap-and-trade, which call for governments to issue pollution allowances, or permits, to businesses that could be traded on the open market.

"I would hope that they would sort of agree that some kind of cap and trade will be the most efficient tool to achieve what science tells us what we must achieve," she said. "A carbon tax ?you can just pay that tax ?but you must also have the caps so that you start innovating from there."

An emissions trading plan advanced in the U.S. Congress last week, increasing the likelihood that the full House of Representatives will for the first time address broad legislation to tackle climate change later this year.

Gore predicted it would pass the House, gain Senate approval and be signed into law by President Barack Obama.

The United States has said it is committed to reaching a deal in Copenhagen as long as other major polluters such as China and India do their part as well.*2
