Pepperdine University's President Dr. Andrew Benton: Progress and Promises
You represent a distinguished 'point of pride'!
By Tiffany Chang

"Many people believe that progress is most easily measured by metrics. Numbers don't lie, they say. I would agree, but numbers reveal only part of the story. So as this academic year ends, I invite you to evaluate for yourself some of the good work that has been accomplished by our students and faculty over the past few months," pointed out President Dr. Andrew K. Benton of Pepperdine University in his message on "Pepperdine People". It was sent to President Dr. Tony T. Lei of WBTI on June 21, 2007 from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.*1

"Through written for a different audience, these words resonate throughout the halls of Pepperdine today. Like President Ford, we recognize that we owe much to those who have invested so generously in our work throughout the years. We have promised a good return. As you read about our recent work, I hope you will agree that we are keeping our promise."

The following information has been received from a search of 'President Andrew Benton of Pepperdine University: You represent a distinguished "point of pride"' on the Google.com in the morning on February 15, 2007. It is presented by Google.com at its first line of the first page from the search:

The following letter was sent by President Dr. Andrew K Benton of Pepperdine University to President Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) on August 30, 2005 from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California:

Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei
President
Washington Business & Tech. Institute
2245 Homeland St.
Las Vegas, NV 89128-6792

Dear Tony,

I'm watching from my window today--from an office situated in a fouth-floor corner of Thornton Administrative Center--and see the future arriving, car by car. This is indeed a strategic vantage point, for from it I witness a pride-filled pilgrimage as parents bring their children to campus, their dreams packed in overstuffed duffels; a few telltale signs of trepidation on their faces. Image with me that in four years, these students will join YOUR ranks...as Pepperdine alumni.*2

This is a favorite season for me, and I write you to share a slice of the excitement we feel on the eve of a new academic year. It's my sith as president, and there is much for which I am thankful. As one of our more than 70,000 living graduates, you represent a distinguished "point of pride" that sets us apart and in many cases lifts Pepperdine into the upper echelon of America's best independent universities.*3
...........................................

[[[Andrew K. Benton became the seventh president of Pepperdine University on July 1, 2000. Benton, who served as executive vice president of the University since 1991, was selected after a nationwide search that included 40 nominees and interviews of several candidates by faculty, staff, students, alumni and administrators.

A 1974 graduate of Oklahoma Christian University, Benton earned his bachelor of science degree in American Studies, and served as assistant to the president of that institution from 1975 to 1984. He earned his law degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law in 1979 and practiced law in the state of Oklahoma. He came to Pepperdine in 1984 and worked in several key leadership roles during his tenure, including vice president for administration and vice president for university affairs. In addition, he has taught both undergraduate and graduate classes at the university.

Benton is presently on the Board of Directors for The Employers Group of California, the Executive Committee for the West Coast Conference, and is a member of the American Bar Association and the Oklahoma Bar Association.]]]*4

The letter is in full of the recent accomplishments of Pepperdine and Andrew's close concern to the alumni of Pepperdine. President Benton concluded the letter that "Meanwhile, will I see you at the Hollywood Bowl on September 23 for our Alumni Picnic and Concert? Please let me greet you and your family. The SPRIT OF PLACE that abides at Pepperdine remains a beacon from this campus to our alumni around the world. The stream of arriving students continues outside my window. And YOU, as the foundation of the future of this precious place called PEPPERDINE, remain in my prayers."

I (SENATOR REID) URGE THE PRESIDENT TO SIGN STEM CELL BILL -
GIVE HOPE TO MILLIONS OF AMERICANS!
By Harry M. Reid*1

Dear Fellow Nevadans,

As many of you know, Congress passed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act this year. This bill, which we recently sent to President Bush, provides hope to thousands of Nevadans and millions of Americans who are suffering from a variety of illnesses and afflictions. I am now calling on the President to sign this bill into law and allow our best and brightest scientists to fully explore the promise of stem cell research.*2

The bipartisan legislation would expand the president’s stem cell research policy and allow for research on stem cell lines that are derived from excess embryos from fertility clinics that are otherwise being discarded. The bill acknowledges the important ethical issues at stake, and would enact research guidelines that are stricter than the President’s current policy.

Although the President vetoed a similar bill a year ago, it is not too late for him to reconsider and to do the right thing. That is why I urge him to take advantage of this opportunity to sign the measure into law. For the countless Americans and Nevadans suffering from debilitating diseases and conditions, the wait has been long enough.*3

Sincerely,

Harry Reid

Reid: President's Stem-Cell Veto Denies Hope To Millions Suffering From Disease

Washington, DC¡ªSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following remarks today on the floor of the U.S. Senate ahead of the President¡¯s veto of S.5, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act:

*1. About U. S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: U. S. Senator Harry M. Reid is the Democratic Leader (the Majority Leader) in the U. S. Senate. He is a man who commands the respect of colleagues from both parties, and a powerful advocate for Nevada¡¯s middle-class families.
But he still lives in Searchlight ¡ and he is still guided by the lessons and values he learned there.
The Las Vegas Sun newspaper summarized Reid¡¯s story by saying that he ¡°has gone from underdog to Senate¡¯s top dog.¡±
Parade Magazine, the nation¡¯s largest weekly magazine, identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington with ¡°integrity and guts.¡±
Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has said, ¡°We all respect Senator Reid. He is one of the moderate voices around here who tries to get things to work.¡±
And former GOP Leader Trent Lott said, ¡°Harry Reid is out there finding a solution. I enjoy working with him very much.¡±
He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and re-elected in 1992, 1998 and 2004. He has served as the chairman or senior Democratic member on several important committees and subcommittees.
Reid is a tireless worker, and it isn¡¯t unusual for him to be the first Senator of either party to arrive at the Capitol in the morning and the last to go home at night.

For Nevada, we need bright vision and enthusiasm with love and integrity. Our mutual cooperation and development between the officials and people will bring us a peaceful, happy, and healthy community. Thanks to the high-ranking officials who are in honor as our co-authors of this presentation.*7

How brilliant! The articles such as "...to honor Attorney General Catherine Cortez ...", "Restoring America's Competitive Advantage By Harry M. "The willingness to create a new vision is a statement of your belief in your potential," pointed out David McNally. Carl Schutz told us that, "Ideals are like stars. You will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides and following them you will reach your destiny." It is our pleasure to inspire the significance of the idea, "The world of tomorrow belongs to the person who has the vision today," which was stated by Robert Schuller. Having good vision, we will bring it together with us to help promote a peaceful, happy, and healthy community.

"Vision seems to be an elusive yet import life principle. Your vision describes the ideal future for you to attain. It provides meaning and direction while forcing you to break through present limitations. Holding a clear picture in your mind of the desired future will mobilize your creative efforts and generate the desire and energy to perform," edited Glenn Ekeren in his book entitled "Speaker's Source Book II".

Vision may develop its power to direct what tommorrow will look like. Vision is having an acute sense of the possible. The thing what others can not see, it can be seen by vision. Something extraordinary will occur when those with similar visions are drawn together. The goal of John F. Kennedy set in 1060 to place a man on the moon by 1970 drew many million people's efforts in achieving the dream. John had the vision. The result is now history with reality.

"I've joined the faculty of Public Administration Institution to work with its intellectuals such as Shelley Berkley, Dina Titus, Nancy Becker, Frankie Sue Del Papa, Dr. Roy Adamson, Mark Denton, Nancy Saitta, Valoerie Vega, Jennifer Togliatti, Michelle Leavitt, and among others under the leadership of U. S. Senator Harry Reid and Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn with Dr. William Thompson as its Director and Fellow. It's one of our added assets that we have the excellent caliber of President Dr. Tony T. Lei of WBTI as our Senior Advisor of our Office of Assistant District Attorney. Obviously, we're winning prestige for our efficient work performance for our residents and visitors of Southern Nevada together with WBTI and its PAI's modern knowledge, rigtheous wisdom, and professional integrity," said Steward Bell, District Attorney, for the event and dinner party chaired by Dr. Tony T. Lei, Dr. R. D. Prabhu, David Amesbuy, Esq., and among others. It was held by the Asian American Community on June 18, 2002 at the Harbor Palace Restaurant in Las Vegas.*8

On September 23, 2002, District Attorney Stewart Bell wrote in his Office to President Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei that "Dear Dr. Lei, I am honor and prviledged to accept your appointment as Honorary Chairman of the Clark County Distrct Attorney and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC) of the Washington Business and Technology Institute. I look forward to meeting on October 7th." In a second letter that he wrote on the same day stated that, "Dear Dr. Lei, I am honor and prviledged to accept your appointment as Senior Advisor of the Clark County Distrct Attorney and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC) of the Washington Business and Technology Institute. I look forward to meeting on October 7th." The two original letters were shown in the section of "Photos & Pictures". An elegant dinner party was held by WBTI to celebrate the appointments at the Steak House of Binion Horseshoe Club on October 7, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada.*9

Enthusiasm is important, especially very important to many things in our lives. We need to push our valuable vision through enthusiasm. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones:

***** There is nothing greater than enthusiasm. ---Henry Moore
***** If you don't have enthusiasm, you don't have anything. ---Kemmons Wilson, Sr.
***** Nothing good or great can be done in the absence of enthusiasm. ---Tom Peters

We are quite inspired by the words of wisdom as said by Alan Loy McGinnis that, "There is no more noble occupation in the world than to assist another human being--to help someone succeed." Vision with enthusiasm may bring us with hope to serve our people, community, and country!

We may like to agree with what Dr. Thomas Dooley said that, "Dedicate some of your life to others. Your dedication will not be a sacrifice. It will be an exhilarating experience because it is intense effort applied toward a meaningful end."

"Dear Dr. Lei, I have read the wonderful article below and have learned so much about what is going on in our local community as well as world wide. There are so many important people who do good things for the community, and they should be commended for all of their efforts. I am highly impressed that you have so many friends and colleagues who communicate with you about their projects and activities for the betterment of society, including our Asian community. Best wishes," pointed out Cheryl Moss, District Court Judge of Nevada.

Entitled with "Michael Douglas: Igniting the city through the cooperation and development with our expertise, integrity, and professionalism is on the way!", the artitle was written by Valerie Weber, Cheryl Moss, Ingrid Ou, and Jennifer Kung.

"It's my great honor to be named by President Dr. Tony Lei as a Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) and an Honorary Chairman of the Clark County District and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC) of Washington Business and Technolgy Institute (WBTI)," pointed out Chief Justice of Nevada Supreme Court William Maupin at the Celebration Party to "Nevada Examiner" and "Communitylink of Reviewjournal.com" at the Steak House of Binion's Horseshoe Club, Las Vegas, Nevada on October 10, 2002. The Party was held by WBTI to celebrate William Maupin's being appointed as its Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) and as its Honorary Chairman of the Clark County District Attorney and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC). "Please know that I irrevocably stand by my personal commitment to diversity issues in this state and that my sense of patriotism and faith in America stems from its embrace of that diversity." *10

Wish the wisdom and effort of WBTI and PDCLV a great success!

Michael Douglas, Valerie Weber, Cheryl Moss, and Tiffany Chang said that, "Brilliant, Google, Yahoo, and Ask.com answer our people, community, and country!

"Leadership is love through integrity! To lead is to serve, to give, and to achieve together. Love with value is based on a real, practical, and genuine spirit concern for others as persons, for their values as they feel them, for their development and growth. A successful leader is consistently follwed by others. People follow because they have a belief in the direction, intergrity, and competence of the one leading. A leader's ultimate responsibility is to facilitate other individual's development as well as his (or her) own. Under her inspiration all the way from community through international perspective, it's our pleasure to participate, promote, and inspire the endeavor of individuals, programs, and projects that can enrich the lives of many people and communities," pointed out U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley's Senior Advisor Dr. Tony T. Lei early in the morning on June 1, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

When it comes to fighting for Nevada and our country, we're up for a good brawl every time
We are blessed to have an extraordinary breadth of experience, compassion and wisdom to draw from!
By Dr. Dina Titus

Dear Tony,

With the 2007 Legislative behind us, it¡¯s time to look towards 2008 and the tremendous challenges ahead for our state.

I am honored to have your friendship and confidence. Together, we changed much about the way campaigns are waged in Nevada. In 2006 we carried our message of hope and progress to every community, and that task isn¡¯t over. Everywhere I go, our friends and neighbors tell me that they feel strongly our country is on the wrong track. Mired in conflict overseas and gridlock at home, the upcoming presidential contest will determine our course and the hopes that future generations will have for a better tomorrow.

Here in Nevada we¡¯ve had an opportunity to meet up close and personal our Democratic candidates for President. The choices we have are exceptional, and we are blessed to have an extraordinary breadth of experience, compassion and wisdom to draw from. Our country would benefit from any one of the candidates becoming the next occupant of the White House.

Last week, I announced my endorsement of New York Senator Hillary Clinton in her campaign for President. Senator Clinton is my pick because of her plan that comprises real policy initiatives that can move this country back in the right direction. She has the experience and leadership skill that can create real change in Washington and Nevada will have a powerful friend in the White House who understands the challenges we face in our fast growing state. I¡¯ve looked hard at the potential Republican nominees, and I believe that Hillary Clinton can whip any of them with our help.

Our movement together has changed Democratic politics and the secret to that success has been listening to one another. I¡¯d like to know what you think! Visit my blog at www.dinatitus.com and leave me your thoughts.

With the organizing occurring around the Presidential Caucus on January 19, 2008; Nevada¡¯s Democrats and our party¡¯s organization grows stronger every day. We gave it all in 2004 and 2006 ¨C and skeptics might be tempted to say, ¡°What more can they do?¡±

The answer is simple: every last ounce of faith in each other, every spare moment and every spare nickel in the defense of our state, our country and our values. When it comes to fighting for Nevada and our country, we¡¯re up for a good brawl every time.

For me, the objectives in 2008 are clear:

--one more Democrat in the State Senate, ending the Republican Majority

--one more Democrat in Nevada¡¯s Congressional Delegation, and we¡¯ll stabilize our majority in Congress.

--Most important of all, Hillary Clinton in the White House to restore our place in the world, our moral leadership and bring hope to a new generation of Americans.

After the last six years of President Bush and the first legislative session with Governor Gibbons, it¡¯s abundantly that without the White House and the Governor¡¯s Mansion we cannot move forward and make the changes we need.

Stay tuned, and I¡¯ll be writing again soon.

Sincerely,

Dina Titus
Nevada Senate Minority Leader

Dangers of Meth in Nevada
Through advocacy and education I believe we can reach out to those affected by this lethal drug!
By James A. Gibbons

Methamphetamine, most commonly referred to as meth, continues to devastate communities and families throughout our state. In fact, Nevada is seeing cases where children as young as 12 years old are using meth. One Nevada study ranked meth usage among high school students 5% higher than the national average.

The devastating reality for children as well as adults is that addiction can occur after the first use, ruining dreams and goals within minutes. The onset of addiction is almost immediate. Sadly, the recovery and treatment process is usually long and difficult with high rates of recidivism.

I have traveled throughout the state and met with current and former addicts who share similar stories about their road to addiction. One point I often heard was that meth was both accessible and affordable. These factors, coupled with the overpowering addictive nature of this drug, sent them into a downward spiral.

Hearing these stories and learning more about the process by which meth is made and therefore accessible prompted me to join in support of legislation that will monitor and limit the sale of precursor drugs that are sold over-the-counter.

These common medicines can be used in the creation of what is now Nevada’s most prevalent drug. Clandestine mom and pop labs use over-the-counter ingredients that produce byproducts that are toxic to the environment. The production of one pound of meth not only releases poisonous gas into the atmosphere, but also creates 5 to 7 pounds of toxic waste, which is most commonly dumped down household drains, in fields and yards, or on rural roads. Additionally, the at-home labs are highly explosive. Nevada has already seen cases where meth labs have exploded, leading to death and destruction in communities.

To read more about the devastating effects of meth, click here.

I encourage all Nevadans to get involved in local or statewide efforts to eradicate meth from our communities. Through advocacy and education I believe we can reach out to those affected by this lethal drug.

If you suspect someone of producing or distributing meth, please call 1-866-2REPORT.

Reid talks about the need to reduce America's reliance on oil
I promise to keep the needs of Nevada as my top priority!
By Harry M. Reid*1

Gas prices in Nevada and across the country are at record highs. Families who were already struggling to get by are having even more difficulty making ends meet. Even with the minimum wage increase that Democrats in Congress passed for the first time in 10 years, increasing gas prices take too much out of one's paycheck. That alone is reason enough to reexamine our national energy policy. But there¡¯s even more at stake. Our current energy policy is also undermining our national security and polluting our planet.*2

-------------------------
Senator Reid discusses the need for an energy independent America

-------------------------
It¡¯s time to put American ingenuity to work to reduce our country¡¯s reliance on oil and fossil fuels. Nevada can play a key role in making our country energy independent. Our state has a wealth of renewable energy sources including wind, solar, and geothermal. It is time to harness these resources and put them to work in a way that will create jobs, save consumers money, and reduce our reliance on oil from unstable regions of the world. As a nation, we cannot afford to keep sending $290 billion overseas to pay our oil and gas bills every year, especially if some of that money ends up in unsafe hands.

This week, the Senate is debating an energy bill that will increase the production of renewable fuels, protect consumers from price gouging, make vehicles and buildings more energy efficient, address global warming, and strengthen our national security. You can learn more about the bill by visiting http://democrats.senate.gov/energy.

It is time for our country to tap into its innovative spirit and renewable energy to work. As we move America forward toward energy independence, I promise to keep the needs of Nevada as my top priority. As I have said, Nevada is blessed with abundant sources of renewable energy and the growth of the renewable energy industry has already brought good-paying jobs to every corner of Nevada. I will continue my work to make Nevada a leader in energy independence.*3

With my warmest regards,

Senator Harry Reid

GOOD FOR NEVADA: THE 2007 LEGISLATIVE SESSION
Nevada will become a better state because of our collective efforts!
By James A. Gibbons

I took office with pledges to improve our schools, make our neighborhoods safer and provide new sources of funding for building highways¡ªwhile keeping the tax burdens on our citizens and our businesses low. The promise was mine, but it required the hard work of 63 members of the Senate and Assembly representing every Nevada resident. They did their jobs, and Nevada will become a better state because of our collective efforts. (Photo: State of the State address, January 22nd)

Nevada students can look forward to record school funding totaling nearly $2.2 billion. Many students will participate in customized education through Empowerment schools, which will give principals, teachers and parents the autonomy to manage their own budgets, curricula and schedules to best serve the students of individual schools. The Youth Guard ChalleNGe Program will give a second chance to students at risk of dropping out of regular schools. (Photo: Signing education funding bill, June 6th)

Nevadans will be safer thanks to new laws requiring better registration and tracking of sex offenders.

In addition to the roughly $1 billion included in my original budget for highways, we have created an innovative funding solution that, through the use of bonds, will generate about $1 billion in additional highway funding¡ªwithout adding new taxes. Now growth will pay for growth as we step up our program of building tomorrow¡¯s transportation infrastructure. (Photo: Ceremonial signing of transportation funding bill, June 7th)

Nevada homeowners will enjoy more protection under the Homestead Act and through a compromise to strengthen Nevada¡¯s eminent domain laws. State employees and retirees will have more secure health benefits, thanks to a new trust fund which also protects Nevada¡¯s bond rating. Our state will gain insurance against economic downturns by the addition of $36 million to the Rainy Day fund.

Before and during the session, I made it very clear that I would not accept any new or increased taxes. This was more than a campaign slogan; it was a promise to the citizens of Nevada. It was a promise the Legislature understood and respected.

Legislators may rightfully boast of many more accomplishments, but these essentially fulfill the requests I made on behalf of the people of Nevada. I would like to express my gratitude to both the Assembly and the Senate, and especially to Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio and Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley. (Photo: Announcing agreement on education budget with legislative leadership, May 29th)

Nevada is becoming an even greater state, and its residents may look forward to even better lives over the next two years¡ªthanks in no small part to the excellent work of the 2007 Nevada Legislature.
