A Stronger, Safer Nevada I applaud the passage of this bill – a product of hard work by both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate! By Harry M. Reid*1Friends – There is nothing I take more seriously than the safety of Nevadans and Americans across this country. We owe a great deal of gratitude to those who protect us from harm, and when it comes to providing them with the tools they need to ensure our safety, only the best will do. With this in mind, I am pleased to inform you of the passage of the Defense Appropriations bill in which I was able to secure more than $93 million for a variety of high-tech programs being developed by the military, UNR, Desert Research Institute, UNLV, and private sector in Nevada.*2 With $66.95 million for Northern Nevada and $26.4 million for Southern Nevada, our state will have the funds it needs to invest in our safety and strengthen our military. I applaud the passage of this bill – a product of hard work by both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate. In addition to funding the high-tech programs being developed, the bill includes a provision to allocate $150 million for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program, a program that seeks to eradicate breast cancer by funding innovative, high-impact research through a partnership of scientists and consumers. I also supported $50 million for medical research programs that will fund peer-reviewed research aimed to prevent, control, and cure disease. If you would like a detailed list of the projects expected to receive funding in Nevada, please click here. As always, feel free to contact my office or visit my website if you have any questions.*3 Sincerely, Harry Reid -------------------------------------------- About U. S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: U. S. Senator Harry M. Reid is the Majority Leader (the Democratic Leader) in the U. S. Senate. He is a man who commands the respect of colleagues from both parties, and a powerful advocate for Nevada¡¯s middle-class families. But he still lives in Searchlight ¡ and he is still guided by the lessons and values he learned there. The Las Vegas Sun newspaper summarized Reid¡¯s story by saying that he ¡¡ãhas gone from underdog to Senate¡¯s top dog.¡¡?Parade Magazine, the nation¡¯s largest weekly magazine, identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington with ¡¡ãintegrity and guts.¡¡? Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach. Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has said, ¡¡ãWe all respect Senator Reid. He is one of the moderate voices around here who tries to get things to work.¡¡? And former GOP Leader Trent Lott said, ¡¡ãHarry Reid is out there finding a solution. I enjoy working with him very much.¡¡? He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and re-elected in 1992, 1998 and 2004. He has served as the chairman or senior Democratic member on several important committees and subcommittees. Reid is a tireless worker, and it isn¡¯t unusual for him to be the first Senator of either party to arrive at the Capitol in the morning and the last to go home at night. U. S. Senator Harry Reid has been honored as a Professor of Administrative Strategies of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) since May 31, 2003. *2. LOOKING OUT FOR OUR VETERANS I applaud the Senate for passing this important measure! By Harry M. Reid*1Dear Friends, Our country would not be what it is today if not for the veterans who fought so hard to protect our freedom. All Americans owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude.*2 Last night, the U.S. Senate passed the Defense Department Authorization bill, which includes the Concurrent Receipt for Unemployable Veterans Act and the Combat-Related Special Compensation Act. I have spent years fighting for these two specific pieces of legislation that ensure our veterans receive the retirement benefits and health care they were promised when they enlisted. Our men and women in uniform put their lives on the line for our country and they, along with other veterans, deserve to be taken care of. This bill keeps our promise to veterans and supports our troops. I applaud the Senate for passing this important measure. If you would like to learn more about Combat Related Special Compensation or Concurrent Receipt, please click here.*3 Sincerely, Harry Reid -------------------------------------------- References *1. About U. *2. Carrots I know I can rely on you for this! By Hillary Rodham Clinton Dear judy, I hear you might be watching a debate with Bill -- can I ask you a favor? Bill mentioned "a big bowl of chips" in the email he sent you Tuesday. If you are one of the three people who get the chance to join him, can you make sure he eats carrots, not chips? I know I can rely on you for this -- because you've been there for me this entire campaign. I've relied on you and more than a million of your fellow supporters, and you've never let me down. Today, I need your help at a critical moment in the campaign. We're just a few days away from the end-of-quarter deadline, when we have to report the fundraising numbers that will set the tone for the final crucial months. The media and our opponents will use the numbers we report to determine the strength of our grassroots support -- help our campaign today and we can beat our goal. And if you enter now, you could be one of three supporters invited to watch an upcoming debate with Bill. Help me win today. Make a contribution: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/watchwithbill The decisions we make about our campaign's strategy over the next few weeks will depend on the strength of your support. If you make a contribution today, before Sunday's FEC deadline, those decisions will be easier -- because we will know we have the resources to win. We're making history, you and I. Together we can change course in Iraq, restore America's standing in the world, achieve energy independence, and make sure every single American has quality, affordable health care. So help me make history by making a contribution before Sunday's key FEC deadline. If you enter today, you might be bringing a guest to watch an upcoming debate with Bill. Help our campaign before Sunday's FEC deadline. Make a contribution: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/watchwithbill Chips or carrots aside, I know Bill is really excited about the chance to watch a debate with you. It's one of his favorite things to do: sit down with friends and talk politics. So I hope you'll enter today for the chance to bring a guest to watch an upcoming debate with him. He's looking forward to it -- and I hope you are, too. Not just because it will be a great experience, but because you know just what your support means to me and to my campaign. The end-of-quarter deadline is just a few days away, so there's no better time to give. I need your help now -- before midnight on September 30 -- more than ever. The FEC deadline is just a few days away. Make a contribution: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/watchwithbill Thank you so much for everything you do to help my campaign. You, me, a TV, and a bowl of chips Why don't you and I share that excitement together during an upcoming debate! By Bill ClintonDear judy, There are two things in this world that I love more than anything else -- my family and politics. So you can imagine just how fired up I get when Hillary is on the stage debating the issues that matter to our country. So here's an idea: why don't you and I share that excitement together during an upcoming debate. Hillary's campaign will pick three people -- each invited with a guest to watch one of the upcoming presidential debates with me. We'll sit down in front of a big TV with a big bowl of chips, watch the debate, and talk about the race. If you enter before the Sunday midnight deadline, you and a guest could be the ones to sit down with me to watch a presidential debate. Join me for a debate. Make a contribution today: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/watchwithbill The debates are a great chance to see the kind of president Hillary will be: strong, informed, and ready to lead. But Hillary can't win without your help. And she needs it today more than ever. We're at a critical moment in the campaign. The end-of-quarter deadline will be here in just a few days. After Sunday, September 30, Hillary's fundraising numbers will be compared to those of her opponents, and every dollar you contribute between now and Sunday will make a huge difference. We've passed Labor Day, which means more people are paying attention to the election -- everything that happens between now and January is magnified. So there is no better time than right now to help Hillary win. Want a chance to watch a debate with me? Make a contribution today: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/watchwithbill I'm excited about this idea because it involves three things I really enjoy: watching debates, watching Hillary run for president, and meeting her strongest supporters. When I tell you I like watching Hillary debate, I mean it. You're talking to the man who stayed up until four in the morning on a trip through Africa just to catch one of her debates live. So if you want to watch a debate with me -- or if you just want to help Hillary win -- enter today, and you and your guest might join me for a debate soon. Don't miss the deadline. Make a contribution today: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/watchwithbill You can't just want change. You have to commit to it. Do you want every single American to have affordable, quality health care? Do you want to end the war in Iraq? Do you want the economy to work for all Americans again? Hillary's ready to change America, and that's why -- with your help -- she's going to make such a great president. Thank you so much for all your support. I'm really looking forward to this one. Sincerely, (Autograph) Bill Clinton P.S. Don't forget -- that deadline is just a few days away, so please contribute today! [An e-mail from former U. S. President Bill Clinton to Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) at {Tue, 25 Sep 2007 13:19:02 -0400 (EDT)}.] ------------------------------------------- About former U. S. President Bill Clinton: William J. Clinton was the 42nd President of the United States of America. Clinton had served nearly twelve years as the 50th and 52nd Governor of Arkansas. "During the administration of William Jefferson Clinton, the U.S. enjoyed more peace and economic well being than at any time in its history. He was the first Democratic president since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win a second term. He could point to the lowest unemployment rate in modern times, the lowest inflation in 30 years, the highest home ownership in the country's history, dropping crime rates in many places, and reduced welfare rolls. He proposed the first balanced budget in decades and achieved a budget surplus. As part of a plan to celebrate the millennium in 2000, Clinton called for a great national initiative to end racial discrimination." *1 "President Clinton excelled as a student and as a saxophone player and once considered becoming a professional musician. As a delegate to Boys Nation while in high school, he met President John Kennedy in the White House Rose Garden. The encounter led him to enter a life of public service. He was graduated from Georgetown University and in 1968 won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. He received a law degree from Yale University in 1973. In 1975, he married Hillary Rodham, a graduate of Wellesley College and Yale Law School," stated the Profile. "Clinton and his running mate, Tennessee's Senator Albert Gore Jr., then 44, represented a new generation in American political leadership. For the first time in 12 years both the White House and Congress were held by the same party. But that political edge was brief; the Republicans won both houses of Congress in 1994. In the world, he successfully dispatched peace keeping forces to war-torn Bosnia and bombed Iraq when Saddam Hussein stopped United Nations inspections for evidence of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. He became a global proponent for an expanded NATO, more open international trade, and a worldwide campaign against drug trafficking. He drew huge crowds when he traveled through South America, Europe, Russia, Africa, and China, advocating U.S. style freedom." *2 *1. The White House of President George W. Bush.
