The memory and floral tributes to U. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao's mother Mrs. Ruth Mu-lan Chu Chao (朱木蘭) By Tiffany Chang***** Life is meant to be a never-ending education, and when this is fully appreciated, we are no longer survivors but adventurers. ---David McNally, Even Eagles Need a Push Judy and Tony were very sad to learn yesterday evening that U. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao's mother Mrs. Ruth Mu-lan Chu Chao (朱木蘭) passed away in the afternoon on August 2, 2007. President George Bush called Elaine's family twice. In comforting, George reminded her father Dr. James S. C. Chao, Chairman of Foremost Group that, "Elaine is the one who serves the longest time as a Secretary of U. S. Department." Elaine respects her mother Ruth as "a noble and eternal wife, a selfless and offering mother, a philanthropist full of love, and an Asian culture scholar." (From Elaine's mouring paragraph to her mother.) "From the difficult years after mariage to raise several daughters, thorugh her courage, diligence, and accomplishment to receive her master degree, until the development and prosperity of their family, U. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao's mother Mrs. Ruth Mu-lan Chu Chao had a life of success. Ruth was a successful family educator and an achieved Asian culture scholar. 'Like mother, like daughter.' Ealine's wisdom, inguinty, and achievement as a leading Asian American public charater have been derived from her mother's heartily love and offering influence. Judy and I were mourning and praying for Elaine's mother Ruth heartfeltly. Our sincere heart and prayers go out also to James, Elaine, U. S. Senator Mitch McConnell, Xiao-mei, Xiao-pu, Xiao-ting, Angela, the family, and their friends," wrote President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI a mourning and praying e-mail to Chairperson Elaine Chao in the early morning on August 5, 2007, in Las Vegas, Nevada. 朱木蘭言教身教給女兒們留下莫大的資產,她曾說「教育是給女兒最好的嫁妝」," reported by Reporter 魏碧洲 of World Journal in New York. The report "趙小蘭母親朱木蘭病逝" was posted on the '超人氣 News' of the Worldjournal.com. on August 4, 2007.*1 "Vision seems to be an elusive yet import life principle. Your vision describes the ideal future for you to attain. It provides meaning and direction while forcing you to break through present limitations. Holding a clear picture in your mind of the desired future will mobilize your creative efforts and generate the desire and energy to perform," edited Glenn Ekeren in his book.*2 The bright vision and offering love extended from Ruth to her children had built a sound foundation for the outstanding accomplishments in each of their special professionalism. The following were some information from the report "美國勞工部長趙小蘭母親去世 親擬悼詞頌其恩德" by 記者邱江波 in 華盛頓 at 8月3日. The news was posted on 央視國際 www.cctv.com on 2007年08月04日 at 14:06: "趙母與疾病頑強搏鬥,積極樂觀地面對病魔。 趙小蘭說,她的母親不僅給予兒女珍貴的生命,更給予了他們追求高欣硐氲木褙敻?" reported the reporter 邱江波.*3 "Six essential qualities that are keys to success: Sincerity, Personal Integrity, Humility, Courtesy, Wisdom, Charity, " quoted Dr. William Menninger. Ruth owned each and every of these personal traits. In facing and conquering difficulties and obstacles, her 'persistense' and "passion"*4 in A.Q.*5 had played an important role to empowered her in the road to success. " wrote Elaine L. Chao. The article entitled "《專題1》平凡與偉大─獻給母親朱木蘭" was written by her (趙小蘭). It was posted through the courtesy of the "母親節專題" of Worldjournal.com to the "Elaine Chao, U. S. Secretary of Labor" at http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti .*6 Elaine said that her mother was good in writing. The following was an literary article written by Ruth when she was very young. With its nice description, the article was published by the School Periodical at her elementary school year: "我從小就愛雨天———霏霏的細雨與傾盆大雨覺得一樣的可愛。 *7 We are humble, but we are encouraged. Thanks. Searching the leading search engines from early morning yesterday until now, we could find that this feature article by WBTI through the communitylink of Las Vegas Review-Journal is the first one on the most recent news about U. S. Secretary Elaine Chao's mother in English appeared on the Internet. Your kind thoughts and prayers are appreciated and may send to the Secretary of U. S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. or Dr. James S. C. Chao, Chairman of Foremost Group in New York, as reminded by Elaine. Wish the soul of Ruth in heaven is respectfully mourned, the family of her survived ones are highly blessed, and the elegant funeral ceremony is in good planning! -------------------------------------------- References *1. 魏碧洲. Talking With Nevadans on the Tour Now, as governor, I have the ability to bring state government to the people! By James A. GibbonsThe northern leg of my state tour is now complete. Over the past week, many of Nevada’s cabinet members, members of my staff and I took our state government to the people of rural Nevada. Department of Agriculture Director Donna Rise, Department of Wildlife Director Ken Mayer, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Director Allen Biaggi, Department of Business and Industry Director Mendy Elliott and Department of Health and Human Services Director Mike Willden accompanied me for much of the tour. We saw firsthand the issues faced by rural Nevadans, and we listened to their concerns. [[[ Noting that mining is Nevada's second largest industry, we toured Round Mountain Mine and met with miners. ]]] [[[ State Entomologist Jeff Knight gave us a briefing on this year’s Mormon cricket infestation during a stop in Eureka. ]]] [[[ In Ely, we saw just how close jurors sit to defendants in the White Pine County Courthouse. I would like our legislators to see this as well, to understand the importance of state funding that will provide courtroom safety for the people who use this building. ]]] At the Interagency Dispatch Center in Elko, where firefighters have been dispatched to manage blazes covering thousands of acres, we spoke of federal land management issues and listened to ranchers whose livelihood has been threatened by this year’s fires. During my ten years of service to Nevadans in Congress, I learned the importance of accessibility and letting people bring their issues to their elected officials. Now, as governor, I have the ability to bring state government to the people. The northern leg of our summer tour was a great success. The lessons we learned will lead to better policy, better management and better service to the people we serve. Now we start planning our southern Nevada tour for September. [An e-mail from Office of the Governor to WBTI on August 3, 2007.] ----------------------------------- About Governor James A. Gibbons: Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons earned a B.S. in Geology and later, a M.S. in Mining/Geology from the University of Nevada at Reno. He also earned his J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law and completed his post-graduate work at the University of Southern California. Born and raised in Sparks, Nevada, Governor Jim Gibbons was a former United States Congressman. Jim was first elected to represent Nevada's 2nd District in the House of Representatives in 1996. He was re-elected to a fifth term in November 2004. Prior to coming to Congress, Gibbons gained a distinguished military background. A former combat pilot and decorated veteran of both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars, Governor Gibbons served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1971 and graduated from the USAF Air Command and Staff College as well as the Air War College. Attaining the rank of Colonel, Gibbons joined the Nevada Air Guard in 1975, and served as the group's Vice Commander from 1990 through 1996. Jim Gibbons served three terms in the Nevada State Legislature and was named 霴utstanding Freshman Legislator ?his first year in 1988. More kind thoughts and prayers for the passing away of Nevada state Senator Dina Titus' father Joe Titus A greater thing is to fight life through and say at the end, the dream is true! By Tiffany Chang***** "Ah, great it is to believe the dream as we stand in youth by the starry stream; but a greater thing is to fight life through and say at the end, the dream is true!" ---Edwin Markham "The passing away of Dina's father is really a very sad news, but he has implemented and achieved his glory fight in life. Judy and I were heartily and deeply mourning and praying for Dina's father Joe. Our sincere hearts and prayers go out also to Betty, Dina, Rho, the family, and their friends," said President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI in the early morning on August 2, 2007, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The e-mail about "Dina's father, Joe Titus, passed away" from Annette Magnus, Assistant to Nevada Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus to WBTI was received on July 24, 2007. As we were waiting for "There will be a memorial service in Las Vegas ... You will receive a notice when the date and place are set" written in her mail, this article has been held until today. Hope there will be more responses to Annette's "The family has asked that you not send flowers; your kind thoughts and prayers will be more than sufficient to help them through." 'For memory of "Papa Joe" Titus, we have prepared a place in the Blog section for you to leave messages and share stories to be given to the family regarding the passing of Dina's father, Joe Titus. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers,' stated the Dina Titus' website.*1 There are 72 comments (kind thoughts and prayers) on Dina's Blog at 8:01 early in the morning on August 2, 2007. He was at home, where he died peacefully in his sleep. As many of you know, he had been ill since January but recently was making good progress in rehabilitation. Joe, or "Papa Joe" as he was known in the campaign, will be buried in Tifton, Georgia. There will be a memorial service in Las Vegas, probably in September. You will receive a notice when the date and place are set," wrote Annette Magnus.*2 We are mourning for the passing of Dina's father Joe. Annette reminded us that, "Please keep Betty, Dina and Rho in your hearts during this trying time. The family has asked that you not send flowers; your kind thoughts and prayers will be more than sufficient to help them through. We have prepared an article on www.dinatitus.com in the Blog section where you can leave messages you would like given to the family." *3 A report by Ed Voel of the Review-Journal Capital Bureau entitled "State Sen. Have a plan to bring our troops home safely? I'm going to send a letter to President Bush! By Hillary Rodham Clinton Dear judy, More than 150,000 of our brave men and women are in a war zone, and Dick Cheney doesn't think Congress should know about how we are planning to bring them home. Well I do, and I won't stop putting pressure on this administration until I know they have a plan to bring our troops home safely. But it's not just that Cheney doesn't think Congress should have oversight -- he thinks those of us who do are "reinforcing enemy propaganda." It is time to find out exactly where the Bush administration stands on this issue. I'm going to send a letter to President Bush, and I want your name to be on it. Join me in calling on him to plan for the safe withdrawal of our troops. http://www.hillaryclinton.com/iraq Here's the whole story. Back in May, concerned about the administration's failure to plan in Iraq, I sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates asking him to provide Congress with briefings of contingency plans for withdrawal -- or an explanation of why no such plans exist. Two weeks ago, Under Secretary of Defense Eric Edelman responded in a letter that said discussing plans for withdrawal "reinforces enemy propaganda." It was an outrageous response -- and a dangerous one. Planning for withdrawal isn't just common sense. It is vital to ensuring our troops return home safe. Secretary Gates quickly disavowed Edelman's letter, saying he encouraged Congressional oversight and promising to respond to my original inquiry. But in an interview with Larry King that aired last night on CNN, Vice President Cheney said he agreed with Edelman's assertion that Congress asking the Pentagon to plan for our troops' safe return "reinforces enemy propaganda." So which is it, President Bush? Do you support the safe return of troops from Iraq, or are you going to continue to play politics with their lives? Let's ask him together: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/iraq I couldn't care less what Dick Cheney says about me. But when he plays politics with the lives of our troops, you had better be sure I'm going to respond. And I know that you want to respond too. Thank you for joining me in calling on President Bush to plan for the safe return of our troops from Iraq, and for the support you show me every day. Sincerely, Hillary Rodham Clinton [From an e-mail by Hillary Clinton to WBTI at {Wed, 1 Aug 2007 13:26:24 -0400 (EDT)} on 080107.] -------------------------------------------- About U. S. Senator Hillary Clinton: Hillary Rodham Clinton is a United States Senator of New York. As a Senator, she has continued her advocacy for children and families and has been a national leader on homeland security and national security issues. She is married to Bill Clinton, the U. S. 42nd President. From 1993 to 2001, Hillary was the First Lady of the United States. As a candidate in the 2008 United States presidential election, she has consistently been the front-runner in polls for the Democratic nomination. During her years as First Lady of the United States, she was successful in several areas, such as establishing the Children's Health Insurance Program in 1997. Hillary's commitment to health care for every American has never wavered. She was instrumental in designing and championing the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which has provided millions of children with health insurance. She battled the big drug companies to force them to test their drugs for children and to make sure all kids get the immunizations they need through the Vaccines for Children Program. Immunization rates dramatically improved after the program launched. Her 1995 book "It Takes A Village," about the responsibility we all have to help children succeed, became an international best seller. The Lady has donated the proceeds -- more than a million dollars -- to children's causes across the country. Her autobiography, "Living History," was also a best seller. The book has been translated into 12 languages and sold over 1.3 million copies. In 2000, Hillary was elected to the United States Senate from New York. As Senator, Hillary has continued her advocacy for children and families and has been a national leader on homeland security and national security issues. U. S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton was re-elected by a wide margin in 2006. New Yorkers reelected her to the U. S. Senate with 67 percent of the vote. (Editor's note) The articles for U. S. Making College More Affordable for Nevadans I am happy to inform you of the passage of both the Higher Education Access Act and the Higher Education Amendments Act! By Harry M. Reid*1Over the last week, the United States Senate overwhelmingly passed two measures to make college more affordable and accessible for Nevada students and families. The importance of higher education in today抯 competitive global economy cannot be overstated. Unfortunately, as tuition costs outpace inflation and income, more and more Nevadans are priced out of the promise of a college education.*2 Today, I am happy to inform you of the passage of both the Higher Education Access Act and the Higher Education Amendments Act. These bills will bring much-needed relief to students and families in Nevada and across the nation. Specifically, the legislation will: ? Increase Need-Based Grant Aid for Low- and Middle-Income Students. This legislation will provide a $17 billion increase in funding for college aid?the largest increase since the G.I. bill. The maximum award for Pell Grant recipients will increase by more than 33 percent over the next four years. Nevada alone will receive $7.7 million in additional grant aid for the upcoming school year and $66.1 million over the next five years. ? Help Make Student Loan Debt More Manageable. The Higher Education Access Act will cap monthly federal student loan payments at 15 percent of a borrower抯 discretionary income. Under this new income-based repayment plan, a Nevadan who earns about $45,000 a year, would have his or her monthly payments reduced from $192 to $149, or 23 percent. ? Forgive Debt for Those Who Commit to Public Service. This legislation encourages public service by providing loan forgiveness for borrowers who continue in public service careers such as nursing, teaching, or law enforcement for 10 years. Under this bill, a starting teacher in Nevada earning $27,957 with the state average loan debt of $16,687 would have loan payments capped at 15 percent and all remaining debt forgiven after 10 years of service ?in this case, a benefit worth $11,974. ? Hold Colleges and Universities Accountable for Rising Costs. Even after financial aid is taken into account, 27-percent of the median family income in Nevada is needed to pay for just one year of college at a four-year public college. By creating a higher education price index of colleges whose costs are increasing at a rate higher than their peers, as well as providing objective information to parents and students on college costs, this legislation will ensure that colleges and states do their part to help keep the costs of education down. ? Simplify the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Form. The complexity and length of the FAFSA application are barriers to many students applying for college aid. The new 2-page EZ-FAFSA helps get financial aid to those students who need it most. ? Reform the Student Loan System so it Works for Students ?Not Banks. The legislation provides benefits to students at no cost to taxpayers by reducing excessive lender subsidies and redirecting federal aid to students who need it most. There are few things more important to our nation抯 future than opening the door to a college education for millions of students. I am pleased that Congress has taken an important step in ensuring that every student across Nevada and our nation can afford a college education.*3 Sincerely, Harry Reid --------------------------------------------- References *1. About U. S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: U. S. Senator Harry M. Reid is the Democratic Leader (the Majority Leader) in the U. S. Senate. He is a man who commands the respect of colleagues from both parties, and a powerful advocate for Nevada¡¯s middle-class families. But he still lives in Searchlight ¡ and he is still guided by the lessons and values he learned there. The Las Vegas Sun newspaper summarized Reid¡¯s story by saying that he ¡°has gone from underdog to Senate¡¯s top dog.¡± Parade Magazine, the nation¡¯s largest weekly magazine, identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington with ¡°integrity and guts.¡± Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach. Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has said, ¡°We all respect Senator Reid. He is one of the moderate voices around here who tries to get things to work.¡± And former GOP Leader Trent Lott said, ¡°Harry Reid is out there finding a solution. I enjoy working with him very much.¡± He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and re-elected in 1992, 1998 and 2004. He has served as the chairman or senior Democratic member on several important committees and subcommittees. Reid is a tireless worker, and it isn¡¯t unusual for him to be the first Senator of either party to arrive at the Capitol in the morning and the last to go home at night. *2. Reid, Harry.
