Have you noticed? Some people have the uncanny ability to see so far into tomorrow, you feel like you're operating in the shadows of yesterday. While you and I are evaluating where we've been, those forward-thinking people are forever exploring where we're going. Instead of reacting, they're on the offense . . . probing, innovating, analyzing, and warning---always warning. While we search for ways to settle in and find comfort on our sofa-like surroundings, they are confronting the consequences of reality, facing the music before we even realize the prelude has begun.*1

Prophets, I suppose we could call them . . . seers who frown while others yawn . . . restless, troubled, contemplative souls. They're not unlike the characters in a thought-jabbing cartoon published years ago. The whole message is contained in a single frame as the figures of a man and a woman are falling upside down through space.

"Gertrude," says the man, "we can't go on living like this!"

Those who slumber in the sleepy, warm twilight of sundown, finding a great deal of security in the mediocrity and predictability of sameness, cannot bring themselves to see either potential danger or possible tragedy. But those who see their world adrift, moving all too rapidly toward a bleak and disastrous dawn, shout across the chasm of complacency, "We can't go on living like this!"

Perhaps they are not upside down after all. They just seem that way. Thinking ahead keeps them topsy-turvy in their heads. While chatty, laughing tourists are taking snapshots of the lowlands with rose-colored filters, those lean, tough-minded climbers have scaled the rugged peaks. It gives them a stark view of what's ahead. Tomorrow's storm keeps them from enjoying today's lull. They're hard to live with, sometimes impossible to understand.

Robert Greenleaf, in his classic book Servant Leadership, recalls a story which grew out of Beethoven's composition, the C# Minor Quartet, Opus 131. When first played in the composer's lifetime, it appeared to be unlike anything the master had ever written before. "Ludwig," a friend asked, "what has happened? We don't understand you anymore." It is reported that Beethoven, with a sigh, replied, "I have said all that I have to say to my contemporaries; now I am speaking to the future."

If you are one of those seers, a tomorrow-thinker in a world of yesterday-dwellers, take heart. Realize that you must be true to yourself. While you may not be applauded for your warnings, you will be rewarded for your efforts. Just be patient with those who lack your zest and zeal. Say your piece, make your contribution, shout, if you must . . . but keep in mind that prophets were seldom heeded, rarely thanked, and never popular.*3

Obama calling for better security for computers!

***** WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is calling digital security a top priority, whether it's guarding the computer systems that keep the lights on in the city and direct airliners to the right runway or those protecting customers who pay their bills online.*1

To oversee an enhanced security system for the nation's computer networks, Obama is creating a "cyber czar" as part of a long-awaited plan stemming from a review he ordered shortly after taking office.

On Friday, Obama is expected to lay out broad goals for dealing with cyber threats while depicting the U.S. as a digital nation that needs to provide the education required to keep pace with technology and attract and retain a cyber-savvy work force. He also is expected to call for a new education campaign to raise public awareness of the challenges and threats related to cyber security.

The review, however, will not dictate how the government or private industry should tighten digital defenses. Critics say the cyber czar will not have sufficient budgetary and policy-making authority over securing computer systems and spending.

Officials familiar with the discussions say the cyber czar would be a special assistant to the president and would be supported by a new cyber directorate within the National Security Council. The cyber czar would also work with the National Economic Council, said the officials, who described the plan on condition of anonymity because it has not been publicly released.*2

The special assistant title is not as high in the White House hierarchy as some officials sought. It would not give the czar direct, unfettered access to the president. Instead, the official would report to senior NSC officials - a situation many say will make it difficult to make major changes within the calcified federal bureaucracy.

Government and military officials have acknowledged that U.S. computer networks are constantly assailed by attacks and scans, ranging from nuisance hacking to more nefarious probes and attacks. Some suggest that the actions at times are a form of cyber espionage from other nations, such as China.

Obama is not expected to announce who will get the job during Friday's unveiling of the review, according to an administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the selection process is ongoing. Other officials close to the issue say a handful of experts - both in and out of government - are under consideration.*3

This April~{!/~}s commencement was personally very gratifying. We had 350 graduates, were privileged to recognize John Figueroa, president of McKesson Pharmaceuticals, as our Distinguished Alumnus, had the opportunity to honor Roma Downey and Mark Burnett with Honorary Doctorate of Human Letters degrees, and saw a wonderful tribute video to George Graziadio for the first time. These are challenging times for our graduates in the job market. The Graziadio School is committed to seeing the success of our aspiring and newly minted alumni, and just as dedicated to the success of all our graduates regardless of the state of the economy. The current recession demands an extra effort by each of us. I challenge our extended family to unite together to take on this challenge and I offer the following call to action for cultivating community in the midst of today~{!/~}s circumstances.*1

Reach out and connect with your former classmates and professors. This is an ideal time to revitalize past friendships, say ~{!0~}hi~{!1~}, or meet casually over coffee.
Add career opportunities at your organization to the Graziadio Talent Online (GTO) database, and encourage others you know to do the same. GTO~{!/~}s effectiveness improves each time you contribute to the listing. Career Services will assist with posting job openings and internships.
Share career opportunities on our LinkedIn groups. Complete or update your profile, proactively offer recommendations, and engage in discussions.
Attend as many school and university events as you can and become more active with the Graziadio Alumni Network Leadership Council or Waves chapter serving your area. These are opportunities for both students and graduates to broaden their network and build valuable professional and personal connections.

Take advantage of career webinars. Nearly every week the Graziadio School offers online workshops that help you manage your career.
Volunteer with service organizations and for social causes in your community, and involve students and alumni as appropriate. Service to others is a healthy way to ~{!0~}get outside~{!1~} your own circumstance and benefit society, as well as to broaden your experience, deepen your values and open up opportunities.
Support alumni-owned businesses in your area. The Pepperdine and Graziadio School alumni network is a society of individuals, but it is also a rich community of varied small businesses and entrepreneurial enterprises. Some face the same challenges in this economy as you and I individually. Through your patronage they thrive and we all gain.

Mark the date July 22nd. The Graziadio School will inaugurate its own annual Los Angeles economic forecast, partnering with Beacon Economics and the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. We are planning an illuminating half-day event that will be a great opportunity for faculty, students and alumni to interact with prominent business professionals and marquee organizations from across the region.

Dr. John Paglia has made an exciting advance in understanding private capital markets and the cost of capital components. In a few weeks, Professor Paglia will unveil the first key findings in his ongoing study that captures, compiles, and analyzes private capital cost data so that business owners, managers, capital providers, appraisers, and others have appropriate information to make better investment decisions. These results are certain to draw industry attention and enhance the School~{!/~}s reputation.

Shortly, I will share details on an alumni lifelong learning program to launch this fall. MBA alumni looking to reposition their career and refresh their degree will be able to affordably return and take new classes or add an emphasis. In this recessionary cycle, we are working to give the MBA you earned every advantage.

President Obama hit a home run with his nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court -- and not just because she's the "woman who saved baseball" by ending the strike in 1995, nor simply because she would be the first Latina ever to serve on the high court.*1

It was a home run because in her three-decade career as a prosecutor, judge, private litigator and law professor, she has time and again earned bipartisan praise as one of America's finest legal minds. And it was the right choice because Judge Sotomayor -- herself born and raised in a South Bronx housing project -- has summed up the American dream in her own incredible story and never once forgotten how the law affects our daily lives.

Now her historic nomination goes to the Senate. I know that process well, and I can tell you that the debate of the coming weeks and months will be shaped by the public response in the next few hours and days. It's critical that the Senate and the public clearly see where the American people stand.

I've followed Judge Sotomayor's remarkable journey for years. I voted for her when President George H.W. Bush nominated her for the District Court in 1992, and I was proud to vote for her again when President Bill Clinton nominated her for the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in 1998.

Born to a Puerto Rican family, Sotomayor grew up in a public housing project in the South Bronx. She was an avid reader from an early age, and was first inspired to pursue a legal career by the Nancy Drew mystery novels. Driven by her mother's belief in the power of education and her own relentless work ethic, she excelled in school. She won a scholarship to Princeton University, graduated summa cum laude, and then went on to attend Yale Law School where she served as an editor of the prestigious Yale Law Journal.

Like President Obama, Sotomayor passed up many more lucrative opportunities after law school to put her degree to work for the public good. She served as an Assistant District Attorney in New York, tackling some of the hardest cases facing the city, including robberies, assaults, murders, police brutality, and child pornography. Her growing reputation for fearlessness and legal brilliance prompted her first nomination to the federal bench, and she's only continued to soar.

If confirmed, she would start with more federal judicial experience than any Justice in a century, more overall judicial experience than any Justice in 70 years, and replace David Souter as the only Justice with firsthand experience as a trial judge. She has participated in over 3,000 panel decisions and authored roughly 400 opinions, expertly handling difficult issues of constitutional law, complicated procedural matters, and lawsuits involving complex business organizations.

In her years on the bench, Judge Sotomayor has earned acclaim from legal scholars and experts from both sides of the aisle for her intellectual toughness, her probing oral questioning, and her ability to issue decisions that hold both factual details and legal doctrines in equal measure. And she's never failed to apply a steady, common-sense analysis of how the law touches our daily lives.

Her story is incredible. Her qualifications are undeniable. And her judgment will serve us all well on the highest court in the land.
