A Unique Moment The sales rank of our new book This Moment On Earth within just one day is amazing on Amazon.Com! By Teresa Heinz Kerry*1Dear Friend, Yesterday morning when our new book This Moment On Earth went on sale in bookstores nationwide, it was ranked 3,398th on Amazon.Com.*2 No wonder the skeptics thought they were winning -- one reporter even thought she had a fair point when she asked John whether Americans really cared about the environment. Well, it's only one day later -- and the book is now ranked #139 on Amazon.Com! This huge first day of sales shows that Americans really care about the environment. Please, come check it out -- write a review -- share your thoughts about environmental heroes you know -- and spread the word to your friends and neighbors. [[[ "John Kerry and Teresa Heinz have written a book that is a profound challenge to all of us but contains, in the examples of the men and women who are fighting the great fight for a better future for our environment, the clear hope that if we can embrace their resourcefulness, determination and essential patriotism we will prevail." -- Former Vice President Al Gore ]]] The book grew out of conversations that John and I had with Americans from coast to coast about the environment and the critical challenges we all face in protecting the earth for future generations. The stories inspired and moved us. John and I share the hope that they will lead all of us to question the way things are and look for small but significant ways that each of us can make a positive contribution to this new environmental movement. We hope they spark a new conversation about ways that everyday Americans from all walks of life can have an impact on the environment around them. And, since all of the proceeds of the book go to environmental causes, we hope the book makes a financial difference for some great environmental organizations, as well. Come check it out -- write a review -- and let your friends know:*3 http://www.amazon.com/This-Moment-Earth-Pioneers-Environmental/dp/1586484311/ Sincerely, Teresa Heinz Kerry ***** [[[ Thanks to you, the book is the #1 best selling non-fiction book and the #8 best selling book overall on Amazon! THE COMBAT RELATED SPECIAL COMPENSATION ACT OF 2007 By Harry M. Reid*1Our nation's disabled veterans have been shortchanged. When these heroic service men and women come home, they should receive the benefits they have earned and rightfully deserve, without having to worry about dealing with unfair policies.*2 Under current policy, a service member with a combat-related disability who served 20 years and 1 day receives full earned retirement pay, but a member injured in combat and medically retired with a 100% disability rating at 19 years and 11 months must forfeit most or all military retirement pay. As a result, seriously injured veterans are forced to deduct the amount of any disability compensation they receive – dollar for dollar – from their retirement pay. For more than a decade, I have led the fight to end this practice. Today, I am proud to announce the introduction of The Combat Related Special Compensation Act of 2007, which will allow disabled veterans to collect both their military retirement pay and disability compensation. This legislation is essential for the more than 23,000 injured personnel who are returning from Afghanistan, Iraq, and other parts of the world. The widespread use of Improvised Explosive Devices in Afghanistan, and Iraq has created numerous amputees and increased the number of combat-related injured members who must be medically retired. Some of these veterans have served 10 or 15 years, and had planned to keep serving until retirement. Now they cannot. That means they lose their retirement pay, and that is absolutely unconscionable. I am proud of the legislation we introduced today because I believe we should do everything we can to give back to the men and women who have put their lives on the line to serve our country.*3 --------------------------------------------- References *1. About Senator Harry Reid (a concise one by the Editor of this flier.) Harry M. Reid is the Democratic Leader (now Majority Leader) in the U. S. Senate, a man who commands the respect of colleagues from both parties, and a powerful advocate for Nevada’s middle-class families. But he still lives in Searchlight … and he is still guided by the lessons and values he learned there. The Las Vegas Sun newspaper summarized Reid’s story by saying that he “has gone from underdog to Senate’s top dog.” Parade Magazine, the nation’s largest weekly magazine, identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington with “integrity and guts.” Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach. Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has said, “We all respect Senator Reid. He is one of the moderate voices around here who tries to get things to work.” And former GOP Leader Trent Lott said, “Harry Reid is out there finding a solution. I enjoy working with him very much.” He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and re-elected in 1992, 1998 and 2004. He has served as the chairman or senior Democratic member on several important committees and subcommittees. Reid is a tireless worker, and it isn’t unusual for him to be the first Senator of either party to arrive at the Capitol in the morning and the last to go home at night. *2. Reid, Harry. It's important to encourage innovative marketing for business! By Tiffany Chang Innovative marketing for business is important. Innovation is practical for a real need. It is not a random process. "When it works, it works because someone has identified a real need, and found a way to bring new ideas or new technologies to bear on that need," said Lewis W. Lehr.*1 An innovator's life is governed by "to create" lists. She or he is incessantly pursuing new possibilities and refinning existing ones. A really creatitive individual is the master rather than the slave of her or his imagination. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** Creativity is the natural extension of our enthusiasm. ---Earl Nightingale ***** Make a technical contribution, innovate, don't emulate. ---David Packard ***** Any business that does not learn how to innovate within the next few years will not be around by the year 2000. ---Peter F. Drucker ***** Innovation has to be linked to a market-driven mentality, tied in with customer needs. It can't be done in a vacuum, or as innovation for its own sake. ---Jim Beard ***** Ingenuity, plus courage, plus work, equals miracles. ---Bob Richards*2 It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: "Business has only two functions," writes Peter Drucker, "marketing and innovation." Consider these phrases posted on separate roadside signs: A peach looks good...with lots of fuzz... but man's no peach... and never was... Burma Shave! In 1925, Burma Shave knew they had a great product but were ineffective in marketing it. So, their roadside advertising was implemented. Today, the Burma Shave commercial are highly recognized as memorable trivia. Here's another exemplary approach combining innovation and unique marketing. A small garage-based company took a single product, biodegradable soap, broke the customary marketing trends and amassed a fortune. Using multi-level marketing, Amway left its competitors green with envy. First, they produced a quality product, developed unique packaging, attached distinctive labeling, and then used direct salespeople to sell their product. It is working to the tune of an estimated $1 billion in annual revenues. Domino's Pizza shocked the industry with their original idea: "Guaranteed delivery in 30 minutes or $3.00 off." Quick service is now a minimum standard in the food industry. Innovative marketing -- could it be the third function of business?*3 "The entrepreneur finds a need and fills it. The innovator anticipates or creates a need and fills it," pointed out Denis E. Waitley and Robert B. Tucker in the book entitled "Winning the Innovation Game." Innovation is one of the most important traits for the prosperity of American business. ------------------------------------- References *1. School empowerment By James A. Gibbons "Empowerment" will be the key word this coming week in our state capital. My school empowerment proposal, in the form of Senate Bill 238 (http://leg.state.nv.us/74th/Bills/SB/SB238.pdf), comes up for review by the Senate Human Resources and Education Committee on Monday. My staff will testify for the bill, and I thought you should know how important this legislation is to our children and our state as a whole. In its simplest form, empowerment is an innovative way to decentralize school administration and customize education to the students of an individual school. It allows the principal, teachers and parents of each school to tailor their students’ education process to their specific needs by giving them control over their own curriculum, their own budget, and even their own class schedules. The results will be evaluated through the same standardized tests administered to all public school students, and all state and federal requirements will remain in effect. The educational goals will be the same. The best means to achieve those goals, however, will be up to each school district and each empowerment school within that district. This is innovation through common sense—allowing educators to do what works best for an individual student population. This concept has proven itself through successful implementation in school systems in New York City, Houston and San Francisco. The basic principles are also already in use in four schools in the Clark County School District, half of which I have toured in the past month. In all of these school systems, including our own in Las Vegas, these empowerment programs have increased student achievement, which is our goal for all Nevada children. My budget includes the funding for a pilot program to empower one hundred schools across Nevada for the next two years. School empowerment enjoys the backing of key education professionals from Nevada’s largest district, Clark County, to one of the smallest, White Pine County. This investment in our children and in the future of our state reaches beyond traditional boundaries. It deserves bipartisan support. [March 23, 2007] ----------------------------- About Governor Jim Gibbons (a concise one by the Editor of this flier): Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons earned a B.S. in Geology and later, a M.S. in Mining/Geology from the University of Nevada at Reno. Gibbons received the MacKay School of Mines Alumnus of the Year Award in 1999, and remains an active supporter of Nevada’s university and community college system. He also earned his J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law and completed his post-graduate work at the University of Southern California. Born and raised in Sparks, Nevada, Governor Jim Gibbons was a former United States Congressman. Jim was first elected to represent Nevada's 2nd District in the House of Representatives in 1996. He was re-elected to a fifth term in November 2004. Prior to coming to Congress, Gibbons gained a distinguished military background. A former combat pilot and decorated veteran of both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars, Governor Gibbons served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1971 and graduated from the USAF Air Command and Staff College as well as the Air War College. Attaining the rank of Colonel, Gibbons joined the Nevada Air Guard in 1975, and served as the group's Vice Commander from 1990 through 1996. Celebrating others' success on time! By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1If you think that praise is due him Now's the time to slip to him, For he cannot read his tombstone When he's dead. ---Berton Braley ____________________________________________ A compliment or encouragement is verbal sunshine. People may believe Celeste Holm's words that, "We live by encouragement, and we die without it--slowly, sadly, angrily." The thing that you will make two people happy is that when someone does something good, applaud! We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** No matter how busy you are, you must take time to make other person feel important. ---Mary Kay Ash ***** There is no more noble occupation in the world than to assit another human being---to help someone succeed. ---Alan Loy McGinnis ***** There are two things people want more than sex and money ...recognition and praise. ---Mary Kay Ash It's our pleasure to post a short essay from "Speaker's Source Book II," by Glenn Van Ekeren:*2 Roger Ailes asks this penetrating question, " Do you bring other people up or down?" He continues, "This may be the most important question facing you in your career and life."*2 A natural follow-up would be, "How are you bringing other people up?" "What specific things do you do every day to show others their importance to you?" One of the most difficult, yet meaningful actions we can take to encourage others is celebrate their success. Forty thousand fans were in attendance in the Oakland stadium when Rickey Henderson tied Lou Brock's career stolen base record. According to USA Today, Lou left baseball in 1979 but faithfully followed Henderson's prestigious career and was excited about his success. Realizing that Rickey would set a new record, Brock was quoted in USA Today as saying, "I'll be there. Do you think I'm going to miss it now? Rickey did 12 years what took me 19. He's amazing." Imagine how Rickey Henderson felt knowing the person whose stolen base record he was about to break was excited about his achievements. Envy or jealousy might have been more natural feelings for Lou Brock but encouragers set self-interest aside and rejoice in the happiness of others.*3 ------------------------------------- References *1. I am proud to serve the Silver State in my new role as U. S. Senate Majority Leader By Harry M. Reid*1Yucca Mountain I refuse to let Nevada become the nation's nuclear dumping ground. That is why I joined with Sen. John Ensign to introduce Senate S. 784, the Federal Accountability for Nuclear Waste Storage Act of 2007, which would require nuclear waste to be stored at the facilities where it is produced.*2 Working to Make Nevada Competitive America has long been the world's leader in science, research and technology, but today, countries like India and China are challenging America's position as the world's economic leader. The key to reversing this trend is by ensuring that our schools are producing a workforce that can compete in a global economy. The America COMPETES Act of 2007 will help ensure Nevada schools and universities have the tools they need to produce a workforce that will help America regain its competitive edge. Nevada First For me, Home Means Nevada, and Nevada has always come first. I am proud to serve the Silver State in my new role as Senate Majority Leader, and I promise to leverage this position to make our state an even better place to live and raise a family. Nevada will always be my highest priority. It is important for us to communicate with each other so that I may deliver the level of service you have come to expect from me. Speak up and share your thoughts and concerns with me. For my part, I will send these newsletters to keep you informed about my work in Washington. I encourage you to subscribe to these important updates today. ____________________________ September 11th Commission Five years after September 11th, the Senate passed S.4, the Improving America's Security Act of 2007, by a vote of 60-38. This long overdue legislation will finally implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations, and improve transporation and border security. Most importantly, it will give first responders the tools they need to keep us safe. At my insistence, this legislation included funding to increase Customs Border Patrol agents at our nation's busiest airports, including McCarran International Airport. As one of the busiest airports in the country, operating in a 24 hour town, McCarran requires even more security and staffing than many other airports. We need to do more to ensure our guests aren’t spending their first three or four hours in Las Vegas waiting on the runway or in line at international terminals. By putting additional agents on the ground in Las Vegas, it would allow us to improve security, tourism, the economy and airport efficiency. A New Course This week marks a solemn anniversary as we begin the fifth year of the Iraq war. This war has taken a tremendous toll on our country, our troops and their families, and our standing in the world. Despite these tremendous costs, despite this great sacrifice, despite the opposition to this war, Iraq continues to spiral out of control. The President's plan is to stay the course with more troops. I disagree. Escalating the war is not the right answer. We need a new direction, and that is what I am fighting for. I will continue my work with members of both political parties to change course in Iraq. Further, I will make sure that "Support our Troops" is more than just a catch-phrase. I will make it a promise. Our troops serving in the field will receive the resources they need to do their jobs and I will make sure when they return home, they receive proper care.*3 --------------------------------------------- References *1. My response to the letter from Secretary of State Ross Miller By James A. GibbonsI have consistently maintained that I acted in accordance with the law. That was supported today by Secretary of State Ross Miller, who stated in his letter ‘that there are no apparent violations of the campaign finance laws outlined in NRS Chapter 294A. Since I was elected Governor, I have remained focused and dedicated to my agenda and my service to Nevada. I am very pleased with the Secretary of State’s letter, which allows us to put this issue behind us and move forward with our commitment to the people of this state. ----------------------------- About Governor Jim Gibbons (a concise one by the Editor of this flier.) Golden words of wisdom for positive thinking By Tiffany Chang"Anything you're good at contribute to happiness," said Bertrand Russell. It is our pleasure to post a short story, Formula for Success, from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: [[[As reported in the "Little Gazette", a former president of the General Motors Corporation started out as a stock boy and had a career that would have delighted Horatio Alger. At the time of his retirement, a report asked him whether it was still possible for a young man nowadays to start at the bottom and get to the top--if so how? "Indeed, it is," was the answer. "The sad fact, however, is that so few young people realize it." Then he outlined a formula for success that will prove out not only in the auto industry but in any business. "Keep thinking ahead of your job! Do it better than it needs to be done. Next time, doing it well will be child's play. Let no one, or anything, stand between you and a difficult task. Let nothing deny you the rich opportunity to gain strength in adversity, confidence in mastery. Do each task better each time. Do it better than anyone else can do it. Do these things, and nothing can keep the job ahead from reaching out after you!"]]]*1 "People worry about the huge amount of creativity that is wasted---lost forever---because talented people are prevented from giving their best by their lack of ability to influence others effectively," wrote Dr. Ken Blanchard in the 'Foreword' of the book entitled "Winning Ways," written by Dick Lyles.*2 "The business world has changed; organizations are getting flatter and more networked. Today, the key to success is one's ability to exercise peer leadership. The most successful individuals shine because of their ability to influence, empower, and energize others. In essence, they embody the principles and practices of Winning Ways." *3 "Rapid changes in technology and global competition have combined to reshape the corporate landscape. Corporate management has responnded to these changes by iniatating sweeping changes. The introduction of new technology may be touted as a productivity booster and turn out instead to be a total bust. Whatever the problem may be, you're the one who has to deal with it on a daily basis. Even when new ideas are well thought out, there are still problems in putting them into practice within your group," George Fuller wrote in the 'Introduction' of his book, "Win/win management: leading people in the new workplace." *4 There are lots of common headaches most of supervisors and leaders have to confront. "It's easy to understand how the broad scope these problems can easily lead to a less than steller attitude toward your job. However, adoping a sense of futility only serve to make matters worse. On the other hand, maintain a positive attitude helps you place things in perspective and can make coping eith problems a lot easier to do." *5 We have some more golden words of wisdom for positive thinking: ***"Few things help an individual more than to place responsibility upon him and to let him know that you trust him." --- Booker T. Washington ***"The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more." --- Jonas Salk, MD ***"Those who trust us, educate us." --- George Eliot ***"Watch your thought, for they become words. Choose your words, for they become actions. Understand your actions, for they become habits. Study your habits, for they will become your character. Develop your character, for it becomes your destiny."*5 ***"Art is the signature of civilizations," --- Beverly Sills ***Jesus said, "Everyone who bears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." --- Matthew 7:24-25 "Bible" ***"A book is a sucess when people who haven't read it pretend they have." --- Los Angeles Times Syndicate ***"Anything you're good at contribute to happiness." --- Bertrand Russell ***"He who never made a mistake never made a discovery." --- Samuel Smiles @***** ***If you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for bidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. --- Job 28:28 of the "Bible" ***"Reserach is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose." --- Zora Neale Hurston ***"The naked truth is always better than the best-dressed lie." --- Ann Landers ***"Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity." --- Oprah Winfrey ***"Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower." --- Albert Camus ***"The secrette of joy in work is contain in one word -- excellence. to know how to do something well is oto enjoy it." --- Pearl Buck ***"Management is nothing more tnan moivating other people." --- Lee Iacocca ***"Imagination is more important knowledge. --- Ablbert Einstein ***"No great artist ever sees things as they really are. To like someone, and to be liked by someone, is a great pleasure of daily life! ---The only way to have a friend is to be a friend By Jennifer Kung and PAI of WBTI*1A friend is one who knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts you have become, and still gently invites you to grow. Joseph Newton said that, "People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges." We need friends, but friendship needs care. Friendship is not only a union of spirits, but also a pleasing game of interchanging praise. Life is to be fortifid by many friendships. To like someone, and to be liked by someone, is a great pleasure of daily life We are pleased to quote the following five short but meaningful ones: ***** A friend is one who walks in when others walk out. ---Walter Winchell ***** The only way to have a friend is to be a friend. ---Ralph Waldo Emerson ***** I am wealthy in my friends. ---William Shakespeare ***** A friend in need is a friend indeed. ---Annoymous ***** If you want to win a man to your cause, you must first convince him you are his friend. ---Abraham Lincoln It's our pleasure to post a short story and quotation from "Speaker's Source Book" by Glenn Van Ekeren: A. How to make friends Dale Carnegie said, "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interest in you." To drive home his point. Carnegie tells how dogs have learned the fine art of making friends. When you get within ten feet of a friendly dog, he will begin to wag his tail, a visible sign he enjoys your presence. If you take time to pet him, he will become excited and lick and jump all over you to show how much he appreciates you. the dog became man's best friend by being genuinely interested in people. Friendship is the result of our efforts to be interested in what's going on in people's lives.*2 B. What is a friend? A friend is someone who concerned with everything you do. A friend is someone to call upon during good and bad times. A friend is someone who understands whatever you do. A friend is someone who knows what you are going through at all times. A friend is someone who does not compete with you. A friend is someone who is genuinely happy for you when things go well. A friend is someone who tries to cheer you up when things don't go well. A friend is an extension of yourself without which you are not complete. Thank you for being my friend.*3 ---Susan Polis Achultz ------------------------------------- References *1. My statement regarding legal defense fund By James A. GibbonsOver the past two weeks, certain individuals in the media and certain political opponents have created an uproar about my use of a "legal defense fund." That fund was created to help defray the costs of responding to allegations by Chrissy Mazzeo and Patricia Sandoval that have been shown to be untrue. The uproar over this legal defense fund is completely driven by a few individuals to make an issue where none exists. The fund was established, on the advice of pre-eminent and experienced lawyers, to comply with all rules during the campaign. It was not then, and is not now, a campaign fund. It did not solicit or accept political contributions. Rather, the funds were used as intended -- to pay legal and accounting expenses related to the allegations at the time. Because I believe that the people of Nevada have a right to know about this fund, I have reported the donations and expenses of the fund, even when it was not clear that I had to do so. I received advice on this matter from legal experts and in no way have anything to hide by using a fund-raising process, used by many public officials, that is permitted by law. I will continue to report on that fund as bills are paid for previous legal issues surrounding the now-discredited allegations. As was the intention all along, the legal defense fund will then formally be closed down. That closing and a final report on the fund should occur in the near future. I realize that there are some media and political naysayers who will try to create a story or controversy every day, to defeat the goals of my administration or just for the sport of it. The people of Nevada should know that I am committed as ever to carrying out the pledges I made during the campaign. I will not be distracted or derailed from those goals, which include enhancing public education for our children, promoting excellent health care for all of our citizens and increasing employment opportunities in our state. An honest review of the real facts of all the allegations that have been made will lead to the conclusion that I have been and remain a hard-working, honest public servant who has never violated the public trust. To those who keep trying to make a controversy where none exits, I say "enough" and let the business of the people of Nevada be done. -------------------------------------------- About Governor Jim Gibbons (a concise one by the Editor of this flier.) ***** [[[The completion of last evening's "A quick post".]]]Two major bills on March 15, 2007 - see them live! By Dr. Dina Titus*1 Dear Tony, I just wanted to let you know that I have two major bills scheduled for hearing tomorrow (on March 15, 2007). The sex offender bill, SB 232, will be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee at 10:00a.m. The bill imposes distance requirements between schools, daycare centers, and parks where children gather and places where convicted sex offenders can live. Such requirements already exist in almost half the states and are under consideration in others across the country. It also prevents sex offenders from plea bargaining to a lesser charge that does not require registration; it provides for GPS tracking of category three predators upon release; and it prevents early parole for those convicted of violent crimes against children. We must all do what we can to protect our children and our neighborhoods from dangerous predators. Tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m., the property tax break for low income seniors, SB 179, will be heard in Senate Taxation Committee. The bill will increase the potential property tax refund for seniors from $500 to $1000. In addition, liquid assets for a claimant and spouse would increase from $150,000 to $250,000. These revisions help to keep up with inflation and mirror contemporary financial conditions. The new eligibility requirements will expand the program and allow more deserving seniors to qualify for the rebate. View both hearings here http://www.leg.state.nv.us/audio/AudioVideo.cfm. As always, thank you for all you do! Sincerely, Dina Titus Nevada Senate Minority Leader [Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2007 19:02:03 -0700] -------------------------------------------- Reference *1.
