Reid ready to helm Senate for long hours
Incoming majority leader focused first on ethics, minimum wage, stem cell research*1

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader-elect Harry Reid said Tuesday he's doing away with the "do-nothing Congress" that Democrats campaigned against and plans to keep senators working long hours, focusing first on ethics, the minimum wage and stem cell research.

The Nevada Democrat said he would tackle those priorities after cleaning up the "financial mess" the outgoing Republican Congress is leaving behind, a reference to nine long-overdue spending bills covering 13 Cabinet departments for the budget year that began Oct. 1.

"They're just leaving town, it appears," Reid said during an interview in his Capitol office. "And so we're going to have to find a way to fund the government for the next year."

The must-pass legislation totals more than $460 billion and could divert time from other items on the Democratic agenda. "It's certainly not going to help it," Reid said.

He is wrapping up his final days as Senate minority leader. He will assume control of the Senate's agenda on Jan. 4, when the next Congress convenes with 10 new senators, at least 52 new House members and Democrats holding majorities in both houses for the first time since 1994.

"We're going to put in some hours here that haven't been put in in a long time," Reid said. That means "being here more days in the week, and we start off this year with seven weeks without a break. That hasn't been done in many, many years here."

Reid said he hopes President Bush is willing to work with Democratic congressional leaders, but he added that the early signs have not been encouraging. He said the White House has not reached out to him since his meeting with Bush in the Oval Office on Nov. 10.

"He said when I met with him after the election he wanted to work together, and I told him, 'Mr. President, you said that two years ago and we haven't gotten anything done,'" Reid said.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said lawmakers have been out of town for most of the time since the Nov. 10 meeting and the president has been traveling abroad. He said Bush "has been very forthright in his interest in having a bipartisan dialogue on the Hill. That wasn't just a gesture in the days after the election. That was an authentic, sincere effort."

Reid said he hoped Bush would use his State of the Union address before Congress early next year to lay out plans for health care, retirement security, decreasing dependence on foreign oil, reducing government deficits and, most importantly, Iraq.

He said the Senate will conduct hearings to investigate problems in Iraq but Democrats have no immediate plans to cut spending on the war.

"Now he's the commander in chief, and we're not going to do anything to limit funding or cut off funds, even though there are some on the outside who suggest that," Reid said. "I think we want to make sure that the troops have everything that they need."

With only a two-seat majority and a Republican president with veto power, Reid's Democrats will have an incentive to work with political opponents to get their priorities into the law books.

Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, whom Republicans voted to be their minority leader in the new year, said while he and Reid are not going to agree on every item, they agree on the need for bipartisan achievements on special spending bills and other matters.

"Earmark transparency is a good start, but I would also like to see us find common ground on Social Security, homeland security, extending tax relief and other major issues that we can't just kick down the road," McConnell said.

Bush used the only veto of his presidency so far to reject a bill passed by Congress last year that would have expanded embryonic stem cell research through government funding.

Supporters of such research say it could lead to treatments and cures for a wide variety of ailments, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases as well as spinal cord injuries. Bush and abortion foes, however, have opposed expanding embryonic stem cell research because the embryos die in the process of harvesting the stem cells from them.

Fratto said Bush gave the matter deep thought and consulted with researchers and religious leaders on the moral and ethical implications of his position. Reid said he hoped the president "will relent and see the light."

In the meantime, Reid said the Senate is "not even close" to having the two-thirds vote necessary to override Bush's veto but he hopes some Republicans will join the Democrats after the GOP's election losses this month.

He pointed to Missouri, where the issue helped pro-stem cell candidate Claire McCaskill defeat incumbent Republican Sen. Jim Talent, who said embryonic stem cell research destroys human life at its earliest stages.

The midterm election came on the heels of several ethical scandals involving lawmakers, and Reid said reform is needed. He said "the first thing we do" will be to require lawmakers to put their names on "earmarks," spending items added to bills that often help a specific company or project in their districts.

Bush supports such transparency, Fratto said.

Citizens Against Government Waste, a taxpayer watchdog group, said there were 9,963 such projects in the spending bills for the 2006 budget year, costing $29 billion.

The third item at the top of Reid's agenda is increasing the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour. It's also one of several measures that Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi has promised to bring to the House floor in the first 100 hours that chamber is in session.

Fratto said Bush is willing to support an increase in the minimum wage, although he doesn't want to publicly debate the amount and wants to make sure it won't hurt small businesses.

U. S. Senator Harry Reid fights for our people and country
By GSBPA of WBTI*2 (On May 7, 2004)

Assistant Democratic Leader of the U. S. Senate and Senator Harry Reid has made a difference for Nevada. From humble beginnings in the tiny town of Searchlight, Nevada to the second highest ranking Democrat in the United States Senate, he has distinguished himself as a fighter for Nevadans and all American families in the corridors of power in Washington, D. C..

"Recognizing his trajectory in public service, the Las Vegas Sun said Reid 'has gone from underdog to Senate's top dog.' Parade Magazine, the nation's largest weekly identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington who possess 'integrity and guts.'*3

"Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and an accomplished legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach. After Nevadans sent Harry Reid to the Senate for a third term in 1998, he was elected by his colleagues to serve as the Assistant Democratic Leader, also known as the Democratic 'Whip.' Reid provides valuable leadership to the U.S. Senate by guiding legislation through the Senate and securing the votes to pass key measures. The respected Washington publication National Journal observed that 'Senator Reid has quietly elevated a long dormant post.'

"In fact, Harry Reid has earned the trust of both Democrats and Republicans, and his reputation for integrity and fairness has given the small state of Nevada a strong voice in Congress."*4

Since entering the Senate in 1986, Senator Reid has assembled an impressive legislative and leadership record for the people of Nevada. Senator Reid has consistently fought for the rights and interests of children, families, and workers. In education, he has worked to reverse Nevada's school dropout rate by sponsoring legislation to establish a national program for dropout prevention. He has fought to bring much-needed funding for construction of schools and for hiring more qualified teachers in Nevada. In health care, Harry Reid has fought for the Patient's Bill of Rights as well as increased funding for cancer research, suicide prevention, and mental health initiatives. Harry has also fought for issues concerning senior citizens, including prescription drug coverage, long term care, and Social Security.

"Working hard to protect Nevada's environment, Senator Reid has established programs to preserve clean air and water, especially in Nevada's treasured Lake Tahoe. In addition, Senator Reid has fought vigorously and successfully to keep nuclear waste out of Nevada. Citizens of Nevada benefit each day from the transportation funds Senator Reid fought to provide. Taken together, the work and achievements of Senator Reid have changed the face of Nevada for the better."*5

On October 22, 2000, U. S. Senator Harry Reid received the "Outstanding Democrat of the Decade" 1990's Award from the Paradise Democratic Club of Las Vegas (PDCLV) at the Skyview Room of the Bally's Casino and Hotel, Las Vegas. In the Program, the National Anthem was sung by Rose McKinny James. The Event was chaired by the President of PDCLV, John Ponticello. He introduced participants of all the elected officers, leaders of unions, persons campaigned for public service, among others. The Keynote Speaker was Senator Harry Reid. Special Speakers were U. S. Senator Richard Bryan, U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, and U. S. Senate Candidate Ed Bernstein. Comments were offered by Rory Reid, Nevada State Democratic Party Chairman, and Danny Thompson, Secretary/Treasurer of Nevada State AFL-CIO.

The heightlight of the Event and Party was the presentation of the Outstanding Democrat of the Decade Award to U.S. Senator Harry Reid by the President of Paradise Democratic Club of Las Vegas, John Ponticello. U. S. Senator Reid graduated from Utah State University in 1961. He received Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University. On April 10, 1998, he was honored as Advisor and Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of Washington Business and Technology Institute.*6

"Asian Pacific American have made profound contributions to American life, including the arts, economy, education, science, technology, politics, and sport. This community was here to help build trascontinental railroad, to serve in the Civil War, and to develop the latest Internet technology. I'm pleased to assure all you leaders of the community here today that I'll continue working to preserve and advance the heritage and value of Asian Americans. I'll put my effort to reach out and address issues of importance to the Asian American community, including the economy, education, safety, racial profiling, and hate crime, and immigration, among others. I'd like also to show my appreciation of all your accomplishments and contributions to the American way of life and your oustanding participation in the political, business , and educational processes. It's my pleasure to accept the honor as Professor of Administrative Strategies of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration of Washington Business and Technology Institute," said Harry Reid, U. S. Senator and Assistant Democratic Leader of the Senate at Asian American Leaders Tea with United States Senator Harry Reid on May 31, 2003 at Korean Garden B. B. Q. House in Las Vegas.*7

Imagination brings us with beauty, justice, and happiness
By Jennifer Kung and PAI of WBTI

Imagination may produce creativity. Creativity contributes profit and prosperity for an institution. Where imagination and innovation are encouraged, it floirish. Innovation is doing something different. Innovation comes from people and it requires insight.

We are pleased to quote the following five short but meaningful ones:

***** "Innovation has never come through bureaucracy and hierarchy. It's always come from individuals." --- John Scully, Chairman, Apple Computer
***** Imagination is more important than knowledge. ---Albert einstein
***** The human race is governed by its imagination. ---Napoleon
***** Inspiration and imagination go hand in hand. ---Annonymous
***** Every vital organization owes its birth and life to an exciting and daring idea. ---James B. Conant

It's our pleasure to post a short story and quotation from "Speaker's Source Book" by Glenn Van Ekeren:

What is serendipity? It is discovering something totally unrelated to the problem you are trying to solve. Call it an accident, dumb luck, or fate--serendipity has given our world great products, new hope, and better ways of doing things.
Foe example, Columbus discovered America while searching for a route to India. It is said that the American Indians, finding no water for cooking, tapped a maple tree and made the first maple wyrup as the sap boiled down. Pioneers, traveling westward, stopped for water and found gold nuggets in a stream. These are all examples of serendipity.
However, the classic example of serendipity must go to George Ballas. As George Ballas drove his car through a car wash, ... Why not use a nylon cord, whirling at high speed to trim the grass and weeds around trees and the house? Bingo! the Weedeater was born!
... Finally, in 1971, Ballas invested his own money in the first thirty- pound Weedeaster. ...
Before long, Weedeater, Inc., grew into a multimillion-dollar international corporation. Yes, one idea can be worth a fortune. Weedeater, Inc., was born from a simple idea in a car wash. *2

Blaise Pascal said that, "Imagination disposes of everything; it creates beauty, justice, and happiness, which is everything in the world." *3

Nancy Oesterle was promoted to Associate Fellow of Public Administration Institution by WBTI
By Valorie Vega, Bill Young, and Tiffany Chang

***** The ultimate responsibility of a leader is to facilitate other people's development as well as his own. ---Fred Pryor

A beautiful Thanksgiving card was sent to President Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) by Judge Nancy Oesterle from her Office, Justice Court Department 6, on November 18, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada. "One of the true joys of celebrating Thankgiving is the opportunity to thank you for your friendship and support. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!" wrote Judge Nancy Oesterle.*1

"Through the recommendation by our faculty members including Nevada District Judge Valorie Vega and Sheriff Bill Young of Southern Nevada, Miss Nancy Oesterle has been promoted from Assistant Fellow to Associate Fellow of Public Administration Institution (PAI) by Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) on December 23, 2004," announced Dr. John Wang, Spokesman of WBTI, on Friday, December 24, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada.*2

"It's a great venue for me to endeavor my effort and interest to education and community service. Through the cooperation and development among business, academic institue, and government, we're expecting to promote the quality of living conditions for all our residents and visitors of Nevada," said Nancy Oesterle after she was being promoted.

Miss Nancy Oesterle is a judge. She holds the Department 6 Justice of the Peace position.

Judge Nancy Oesterle was appointed to the Las Vegas Justice Court Bench in December of 1990 and became the first female ever appointed in its 89 year history. She has been re-elected to that position twice and has been Chief Judge of Las Vegas Justice Court twice. Judge Oesterle served eight (8) years on the Nevada Judges Association board and was president in 1995. For the past six years she has been the Chairman of the Education Committee for the Nevada Judges Association and she is an active member of the Legislative Committee, speaking frequently in Carson City on bills that affect the Nevada Judges Association. She is a member of the Nevada Supreme Court Judicial Assessment Commission and chair of the Criminal Justice Task Force Sub-committee. She is co-chair of the Nevada Supreme Court Community Relations Committee and a member of the Nevada Supreme Court Mandatory Sentencing Commission. The Nevada Judges Association honored Judge Oesterle with the Distinguished Judge of the Year Award in 1994.

Judge Oesterle moved to Las Vegas 29 years ago from South Miami, Florida. She attended the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 1978 and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice graduating with High Distinction. She then attended California Western School of Law in San Diego and received her Juris Doctor Degree in 1981. Upon graduating from law school, Judge Oesterle was employed by the Clark County District Attorney抯 Office as a trial attorney in the criminal division for almost 10 years. During that time period she served six years on the Clark County Bar Association Board and in 1990 was President of Clark County Bar Association. In 1993 the Clark County Bar Association presented her with the Distinguished Presidential Service Award for her service to the Bar and that same year she was honored by the Chamber of Commerce with the Women of Achievement award for the legal category. In December, 2000, Judge Oesterle was named by the Clark County Law Foundation as the first ever Ambassador of the Year Award for her continued community service.

Judge Oesterle believes strongly in the importance of educating the public in all aspects regarding the law. She is the creator, producer and co-host of a weekly TV show, Law For The Layman, which has been airing in Clark County for the past thirteen (15) years. She also volunteers her time to a program she initiated entitled Keys to the Courthouse in which she visits elementary schools on a weekly basis and brings the elementary class to her courtroom to educate them regarding the criminal justice process. She has been the organizer of the Doctor v. Lawyer volleyball tournaments and softball games for charity for the past fourteen (16) years. But her real claim to fame was being a UNLV cheerleader throughout her years at UNLV.*3

In January 2000, Dr. Tony Lei and Dr. William Thompson established the Public Administration Institution (PAI) for WBTI. It has Dr. Thompson as its Fellow and Director; Nevada State Senator and Professor of UNLV Dina Titus, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Nancy Becker, Former Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa, and Dr. Achie Chang as its Fellows; and District Judges Mark Denton, Valorie Vega, Michelle Leavitt, Jennifer Togliatti, and Jessie Walsh as its Associate Fellows.*4

"As the Director of Public Administration Institution (PAI) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI)*5, I've shared a pleasant leadership with Dr. Tony Lei cooperated by all the Faculty members of this Institution since it's establishment on January 18, 2000. Innovated in integreting his expertise in institutional management and spiritual value in education, Dr. Tony Lei's effort and wisdom for the community service in Nevada in the recent eight years have been very valuable. We expect Pan Pacific and Asian American Forum (PPAAF) founded by this Institute in September 28, 2001 will contribute to improve the quality of life of the people and the prosperity of this State of Nevada," said Dr. William Thompson, UNLV Professor of Public Administration and former Chairman of Department of Public Administration in a Dinner Party. The Party was held by WBTI at the Gee Joon Chinese Restaurant of Horseshoe Club on January 28, 2002 in Las Vegas.*6

***** O Lord, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
Yonder is the sea, great and wide,
creeping things innumerable are there,
living things both small and great.

Belinda was very excited about the Director's knowledge and friendship to Chinese. The Direcor emphasized the importance of the Chinese people as favorable tourists to his country.

***** Knowing how to live one's life with Jesus is a great art; and knowing how to hold him fast is the peak of wisdom. ---Thomas A. Kempis (1380-1471)

[[[Believe in what you do]]]:
Sometimes we may find that the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, it may be that they take better care of it there. People need to work. People will never know how long it takes you to do something, but they only know how well it is done. There are three things to make an individual happy in their work: They must be fit for it, they must be sometime praised, and they must have a sense of success in it. Jonn W. Gardner pointed out that, "The best-kept secret in America today is that people would rather work hard for something they believe in than enjoy a pampered idleness." God gives us the nuts, but he does not crack them. As we like our work, we do not feel that we are working during the long hours. It fascinates us, and we can sit and look at it for hours.

We are pleased to quote the following five short but meaningful ones:
***** Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don't recognize it. ---Ann Landers
***** Hard work without talent is a shame, but talent without hard work is a tragedy. ---Robert Half
***** Hard work means prosperity; only a fool idles away his time. ---Proverbs 12:11
***** I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it. ---Stephen Leacock
***** Ask God's blessing on your work, but do not also ask Him to do it. ---Waggerl

It's our pleasure to post a short story and quotation from "Speaker's Source Book" by Glenn Van Ekeren:
A carpenter whose brother was a famous musician was visiting with the foreman of the construction company where he worked. "You must feel honored to have a brother who is known around the world for his musical abilities," the foreman commented. And then, failing to recgnize that he might have hurt his worker's feeling, he continued, "Of course, not everyone in the same family can enjoy an equal amount of talent."
"You're right," the carpenter replied. "My brother donsn't know the first thing about building a home. It's fortunate he can afford to hire others to build a house for him."
B. C. Forbes suggested that "whether we find pleasure in our work or whether we find it a bore depends entirely upon our mental attitude towards it, not upon the task itself."
The same can be said of finding importance in what we do. It all depends on how we choose to see it. Maybe that is why Booker T. Washington, in 'Up From Slavery', advised his readers that "there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem." *19

This Sunday November 19, 2006, the Sermon was delivered by Rev. Tong Liu, Senior Pastor of River of Life Christian Church. The subject was "Vessels of Honor." Victor Quon, Mr. Kevin Gordon (Kevin Gordon, Esq.), Pastor Doris Lin (Miss Doris Lin), Mr. Henry Hu, Mr. John Lei, Mrs. Jessica Wong, Mr. Walter Wong, Mr. Patrick Nolan, Ms. Lynn Ling Yang, Miss Vivian Chao, Miss Frances Chang, Miss Mariany Lee, Mr. and Mrs. Anothny Tsai, Ms. Cathy Tsai, Miss Christina (Ping) Tsai, Mr. Victor Luo, Miss Tine Lo, Mr. Gino Ko, Miss Angel Ku, Miss Prudy Yu, Miss Orchid Soh, Mr. Meung Kim, Miss Esther Huang, Miss Vera Suherman, Miss Nicole Ying, Miss Emily Ho, Miss Heidi Hsu, Mr. Arthur Quach, Mr. Yee Tuck Yong, Miss Merry Xiao, Ms. Tao Long, Mr. and Mrs. John Perrott, Mr. Roland On, Mrs. Jennie Quon, Ms. Cindy Chien, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Barnes, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Wu, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Komashko, Ms. Anna Wen, Ms. Abby Komashko, Miss Christine Tsai, Mr. and Mrs. David Whitney, Ms. Merreyl Whitney, Ms. Jenny Long, Ms. Cindy Barnes, Ms. Elaine Tran, Miss Sandy Pei, Ms. Jocelyn Huang, Ms. Miao Chun, Miss Susan Dai, Miss Julie Tai, Mr. John Lee, Ms. Linda Miao, Miss Shirley Zhang, Dr. and Mrs. Tony Tung-tien Lei, and among others (names in random). The atmosphere of the Fellowship was pleasent and friendly. Hallelujah!

To agree with Mr. Gino Ko, "I also look forward to reading the articles of WBTT's website," said Miss Angel Ku. The food of the Coffee/Tea Fellowship was prepared by Miss Mariany Lee in the previous week. The Salad and fruits were prepared by Miss Prudy Yu. The food and fruits were prepared by Kevin Gordon, Esq., and Miss Emily Ho this week.

"We're going to innovate. We'll have something new early in the coming year. Potentially, we'll recruit some more Caucasian ministers for our Sermon. Certaily, the development of our cell groups is very important," chatted Miss Meriany Lee in the Coffee/Tea Fellowship. It is our pleasure to post the address of River of Life Christian Church's website: rolcc.net

"Paul in I thessalonians Chapter 5 verse 18 says, 'Give thnaks in all circustances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus' Since the scripture says 'in all circumstances', it means that God's will is for us to be thankful in big things, small things, and in rich and poor. But how can we be thankful in the busy lives of Silicon Valley? Fist of all, we must have a humble heart. Humility opens our hearts to receive God's grace for our daily accomplishments. A song says, 'If we count God's blessings, then we will rejoice,'" wroted Rev. Tong Liu on November 19, 2006. "Next, we need to be sensitive. We always try to come up with something big to thank God for during Thanksgiving. However, the fact is if we can't thank God for the small things, it's really difficult for us to give Him the glory for the big things. We must ask god to give us a sensitive heart and learn to appreciate for the small things. Let us give thanks to the Lord from today on." *20

Jesus said, "Everyone who bears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." --- Matthew 7:24-25 of the "Bible"

"Our knowledge, wisdom, and professionalism are all achieved by our sincere love to God!" pointed out President Dr. Tony T. Lei of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI).

Asian Pacific American have made profound contributions to American life, including the arts, economy, education, science, technology, politics, and sport. S. Senator and Assistant Democratic Leader (now Democratic Leader) of the Senate at Asian American Leaders Tea with United States Senator Harry Reid on May 31, 2003 at Korean Garden B. B. Q. House in Las Vegas.*21

On the first page of the book entitled "Pray for the Spiritual Characters of Our Children" that sent by her to them, Mrs. Belinda M. Liu wrote to President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI and his wife Judy, "Though your prayers, you make your children transfer with excellent characters. This has then becmome the good fortune of your whole family."

"It's funny how God has His timing, but thank God for that, because that's how we all learn our personal lessons in life. Like everyone eles, I'm only human -- I make mistake, and I go through the good times and the bad. But if it's one thing that I have learned, life is so much easier and far better WHEN GOD IS IN THE PICTURE," wrote Miss Frances Liu, Belinda's Daughter, at a preface of the above book.*22

Thank You
By John Ensign*1

Unfortunately across the country our Republican team had few successes, but one of the best performances was right here in Nevada. Your efforts carried our candidates and our state to victory under difficult circumstances, and you should be proud of this accomplishment.

It is and always has been an honor representing you in the United States Senate. Our campaign was a success, and it would not have been possible without you and all of the hard work put forth by our volunteers. I cannot thank you enough for not only your time and dedication to our campaign, but also for the trust you continue to put in me to represent our Nevada values in the United States Senate.

Nevada has many challenges ahead, and we need people who understand our state, our beliefs and our way of life. Throughout this campaign I have talked about what we have accomplished and how to meet the challenges we face. I look forward to building on these accomplishments and working together with you and elected officials across our state to keep Nevada strong.

Thank you for your continued support and for all of your time and hard work throughout this campaign.

On his Policy, Establishment, and Visions as the Magistrate of Penghu County, Dr. Lai set his goal "to develop Penghu into 'an International isle, A Pearl in the Ocean' since accession. Furthermore, Dr. Lai set two major policy guidelines for the people: 'Improve the Environment, and Inspire Energy'. By aggressively improving the life quality and industry environment, we try to pursuit stability under growth. In this pursuit, we hold the faith to help ourselves and people will help us in return."*5

Magistrate Feng-wei Lai of Penghu County led a delegation team of about 20 high-ranking officials to visit Nevada on September 4, 2005. A welcome dinner party was held for him and his wife on September 5, 2005 at the Sky Room of Stratosphere Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. He and his delegation team visited the Office of Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn in Las Vegas on September 6, 2005. A welcome confernce was held by the Office in its Meeting room. A gifts exchange between Governor Kenny Guinn and Magistrate Feng-wei Lai was also held.*6

"Dr. Tony Lei is one of the most respected first class alumni of Tunghai University. We have had several distingueshed alumni like him among our first four classes. It's my interest to join WBTI with my knowledge, wisdom, and talent for the promotion and cooperation of academic and tourism development between Nevada and Penghu. This is a great challenge, but a worthy and honorable effort. Of international importance, Penghu's relationship and ties with Nevada has become a valuable asset. We hope that a modern public administration strategy will be formed and based on mutual cooperation and development among the international cities. It's my honor to be named as an Assistant Professor to GSBPA of WBTI," said Dr. Feng-wei Lai in the Conference held at Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn's Office on September 6, 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada.*7

***** Feng-wei has accomplished successfully his term of Magistrateship at the end of last year.

In case you need futher proof that the human race is doomed through stupidity, here are some actual label instructions on consumer goods.

***On a Sears hairdryer: Do not use while sleeping. (and that's the only time I have to work on my hair.)
***On a bag of Fritos: ...You could be a winner! No purchase necessary.
***On packing for a Rowenta iron: "Do not iron clothes on body." (but wouldn't this save me more time?)
***On Nytol Sleep Aid: "Warning: May cause drownsiness." (and... I'm taking this because???)
***On most brands of Christmas lights: "For indoor or outdoor use only." (as opposed to ...what?)
***On a Japense food processor: "Not to be used for the other use." (now, somebody out there, help me on this. I'm a bit curious.)
***On an American Airlines packet of nuts: "Instructions: Open packet, eat nuts." (Step 3: maybe, uh...fly Delta?)
Now that you've smiled at least once, its your turn to spread the stupidity and send this to someone you want to bring a smile to (may even a chuckle)...in other words send it to everyone. We all need to smile every once in a while.

Sarah's life is a story of firsts
By Dr. Harry Reid and PAI of WBTI*1

Nevada's second statue in the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall was dedicated March 9, 2005. The Sarah Winnemucca Statue will join Nevada's other statue of Patrick A. McCarran as the two statues contributed by the Silver State.

The following speech is the one that I delivered at the dedication ceremony. It would be most inspired by our people here in Nevada for the story of Sarah Winnemucca:

"Sarah Winnemucca is Nevada's second statue in the Capitol. Our other statue, Senator McCarran, has been here for 45 years - which I believe marks the first time Sarah Winnemucca ever came in second to anyone.

"Sarah's life is a story of firsts.*2

"She was the first female Native American to write a book. She set up Nevada's first school for Native American children. And she was one of the first individuals to navigate between her own culture and the settlers.

"As someone who showed so much courage in charting a new course, Sarah's statue fits in well among other "first? Americans in the Capitol, individuals like our first President George Washington?.and the first woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Jeanette Rankin.

"And with Sarah's statue, we experience another sort of "first? today.

"Sculptor Benjamin Victor becomes the youngest artist ever to complete a work for the National Statuary Hall Collection.

"None of us knew Sarah Winnemucca, but because of this 26 year-old man, we can get a glimpse of who she was ? as will thousands of visitors to our nation抯 Capitol each year. And when they see this work, they will get a sense of Nevada抯 history卆nd our country抯 history.

"One week ago, many of us gathered in this same spot to present Jackie Robinson's widow with the Congressional Gold Medal. We praised Jackie for breaking the color barrier not just in baseball, but in minds across the country.

"It is praise we can equally lavish on Sarah Winnemucca for the work she did on behalf of Native Americans over 125 years ago.

"Disillusioned by the treatment and relocation of the Paiute people, Sarah became an activist - - in addition to the many other roles she held, which included teacher, author and translator.

"Sarah traveled across the country, introducing Americans to her people and the struggles they faced through a series of lectures on the East Coast. She even visited Washington, DC to plead her case with President Hayes and the Secretary of the Interior? only to be sent home with promises that would never be fulfilled.

"Having dealt with an indifferent U.S. government, it has been written that Sarah died believing she had not accomplished much ? unconvinced that her life had an impact.

"I think if she could see us today, she might change her mind.

"While our country and our culture remain far from perfect, we are further down the trail Sarah set out on a Century ago. And while she may have died believing she did not make a difference, her image in the Capitol is proof her story remains very much alive.

"It took 45 years for Nevada to get its second statue in the Capitol. When you consider what Sarah did in just 47 years of life, you've got to wonder what took so long.

"As this statue takes its permanent place, I'm proud that Sarah is the newest face of Nevada in Washington, DC, and that as a state, we have helped ensure her legacy lives on for generations to come.?*3

Reid pledges to 'do good things' for Nevada
By STEVE TETREAULT
STEPHENS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada said Wednesday that demands of his new job as Senate majority leader prompted him to give up other posts that were helpful to promote Nevada interests.

But, the Senate's top Democrat said his new responsibilities will not keep him from obtaining federal money for the state or from continuing his vigilance against the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

"The question is, can I do good things for the state and the answer is yes," Reid said. "We will do better than we have ever done."

In an effort to show he will not forget his constituents as he moves into an expanded role as Senate manager and national party spokesman, Reid met with Nevada reporters a day after he was elected Senate majority leader.

Republicans engineered the defeat of Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota in 2004 in part by accusing him of losing touch with his state. Reid earlier this year beefed up his Nevada staff, seeking to avoid being defined by critics in the same way.

"I want everyone to understand I am the senator from Nevada," Reid said Wednesday.

At the meeting, Reid also shrugged off a report that convicted Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff was implicating him in an ongoing corruption investigation. ABC News reported on its Web site that Abramoff has told prosecutors that Reid agreed to help him on Indian gaming matters, and that $30,000 in campaign contributions from his clients "were no accident and were in fact requested by Reid."

The network attributed the report to an unnamed source.

"As I understand, he (Abramoff) is on his way to jail," Reid said. "This is an old story. Some anonymous source is what this story is about."

Reid's office further issued a written response stating that information in the report had been discredited previously and that Reid's activities on Indian gaming have been legal and proper.

Reid said neither he nor members of his staff have been contacted by authorities investigating Abramoff, who has pleaded guilty to charges of fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials.

On his promotion to majority leader, Reid moved to explain why he dropped off the Senate Appropriations Committee this week.

Reid had been on the committee since 1986. While there has been growing criticism of earmarked "pork barrel" spending, Reid without apology utilized the seat to steer millions of dollars in earmarked spending to the state while arranging budget cuts for Yucca Mountain.

Previously, Reid gave up seats on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and the Aging Committee as he climbed Senate leadership.

"It is not fair to the institution or the country or certainly the state of Nevada for me to be on things that I don't have time to do a decent job on," Reid said.

But being majority leader "allows me sway," Reid said. "I control what we take up on the floor."

"I have a full-time person working on the environment committee and I have plenty of coverage on the appropriations committee," he said.*2

The only way to have a friend is to be a friend
By Jennifer Kung and PAI of WBTI

A friend is one who knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts you have become, and still gently invites you to grow. Joseph Newton said that, "People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges." We need friends, but friendship needs care. Friendship is not only a union of spirits, but also a pleasing game of interchanging praise. Life is to be fortifid by many friendships. To like someone, and to be liked by someone, is a great pleasure of daily life

We are pleased to quote the following five short but meaningful ones:

***** A friend is one who walks in when others walk out. ---Walter Winchell
***** The only way to have a friend is to be a friend. ---Ralph Waldo Emerson
***** I am wealthy in my friends. ---William Shakespeare
***** A friend in need is a friend indeed. ---Annoymous
***** If you want to win a man to your cause, you must first convince him you are his friend. ---Abraham Lincoln

It's our pleasure to post a short story and quotation from "Speaker's Source Book" by Glenn Van Ekeren:

A. How to make friends

Dale Carnegie said, "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interest in you." To drive home his point. Carnegie tells how dogs have learned the fine art of making friends. When you get within ten feet of a friendly dog, he will begin to wag his tail, a visible sign he enjoys your presence. If you take time to pet him, he will become excited and lick and jump all over you to show how much he appreciates you. the dog became man's best friend by being genuinely interested in people.

Friendship is the result of our efforts to be interested in what's going on in people's lives.*2

B. What is a friend?

A friend is someone who concerned with everything you do.
A friend is someone to call upon during good and bad times.
A friend is someone who understands whatever you do.
A friend is someone who knows what you are going through at all times.
A friend is someone who does not compete with you.
A friend is someone who is genuinely happy for you when things go well.
A friend is someone who tries to cheer you up when things don't go well.
A friend is an extension of yourself without which you are not complete.
Thank you for being my friend.*3
