Those of you who have been following my Dean~{!/~}s Messages for the News Update already know that the Graziadio School has embarked on an ambitious strategic plan called Distinctive Leadership 2015. We are committed to enriching student learning, enhancing thought leadership, cultivating community, building partnerships, and advancing reputation. News Update keeps you posted on our progress each month.

Three guiding principles underscore all we have set to achieve through Distinctive Leaders 2015. For me, they sum up what the Graziadio School is about: student-focused, experience-driven and values-centered.

Student-focused: We serve the enrichment of our students. That commitment does not end at graduation, but is a life-long partnership to advance learning, ensure personal value and foster professional excellence.

Experience-driven: Our programs provide opportunities to lead, challenge you to participate, encourage collaboration and expose you to learning that is practical and relevant. You see immediate results in yourself and your organization, and you face life and work better prepared to anticipate and lead change at all levels.

Values-centered: Our curriculum gives you a deeper understanding of your own values, so that you in turn may make decisions that better reflect your unique leadership style. We help you to successfully anchor those decisions in the core values of integrity, stewardship, courage and compassion.

Distinctive Leadership 2015 has made significant progress; some I have previously mentioned and others I am now pleased to share.

What~{!/~}s Next? The Road to Economic Recovery Conferences
Following the success of July~{!/~}s first Los Angeles economic forecast conference, the Graziadio School and Beacon Economics will be partnering again in Northern California. Our next forecast event offers an outlook for the Silicon Valley and South Bay economies on September 24 in San Jose, Calif. Save the date and check your email for program and registration details.

Industry taps into the Pepperdine Private Capital Markets Project
Since Dr. John Paglia premiered results from his survey of private lending and investment trends and behaviors, nearly 500 industry professionals have downloaded the report. The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal have both cited findings. In October, Dr. Paglia launches the next industry survey and an update on the state of private capital is expected by January.

Fast-track your MBA
Fully employed students with an accredited undergraduate business degree, a 3.5 GPA or better, minimum 600 GMAT score and minimum two years work experience qualify to fast track to their elective subjects. The Fast Track FEMBA option waives up to three core courses for high-performers who meet the criteria.

New entrepreneurship curriculum launches
Malibu and West Los Angeles-based entrepreneurship classes this fall are the first to debut a new program design. The new curriculum will emphasize creativity and help entrepreneurs roll out bankable ideas. I am also pleased to note that all of our entrepreneurship courses are full. It is great to see students responding so positively to our revised program.

Entrepreneur-in-Residence joins the school
Technologist, inventor and serial entrepreneur John Shearer joins the Graziadio School this fall as our first Entrepreneur-in-Residence. He will create opportunities for Graziadio students to discover and then systematically exploit technologies from other universities, national research laboratories and the private sector that we will lead to innovative student-founded businesses. We expect the result will be new (and more commercially viable) uses of the given technology, new solutions to the given problem, or new problems and solutions entirely, thus enhancing the quality of student-founded businesses.

MBA Plus expands learning for returning alumni
MBA graduates may return to take classes that reposition their expertise or add extra value for continued career growth as space permits. Offering reduced tuition. MBA alumni may enroll to earn an emphasis or take advantage of new course offerings.

Global Programs expand
In keeping with the ~{!0~}global orientation~{!1~} stated in our mission, the Graziadio School continues to expand access to an even wider variety of international business programs. Students now have opportunities to study abroad for 1-week Global Business Intensive courses, 3-week international summer school courses at global partner schools, 8-week to 1-trimester exchange programs, and other variations making it easier to accommodate diverse schedules. Options are also available to meet any budget, including programs with no fees and very low fees. Destination options abound with over 30 partner universities on 5 continents including prestigious new partnerships with Audencia Nantes, France; Sun Yat-sen University, China; Warsaw School of Economics, Poland; and Stellenbosch University, South Africa. A special 5-day Global Business Intensive course will be offered this December at the West Los Angeles Campus for those students who find it difficult to travel abroad. The course will be taught by a visiting professor from INCAE Costa Rica, Dr. Michael Metzger, and will explore issues related to conducting sustainable global business in Latin America.

Healthcare scholarship now available
Enhancing student learning, Jerri and Dr. Steven Nagelberg have established an endowed scholarship to support full-time MBA students with need and who are going into a position in the healthcare field. I thank the Nagelbergs for their generosity and patronage..

MINT Program boasts career management opportunities
Still in its formative stages, the Graziadio School is partnering with the career services consultancy UpMo to offer the MBAs in Transition Program. MINT will help students and recent business graduates land the jobs they want and stay ahead in their careers using science, proven guidance, and cutting-edge tools. I will be sharing more on this as we move forward.

Hello Friend,

The current state of the health care debate reminds us of everything we need to know about stamping out the distortions and fighting back with the truth before lies take root. The rightwing and their allies have spent weeks and months spreading the most egregious mistruths about the health care reforms of Sen. Kennedy and President Obama, and whipping up anger. Now, you can't turn on your t.v. or radio without hearing repetition and repetition of misinformation, trying to drown out real debate.

We can defeat the big lies and achieve health insurance reform, but it won't be easy now that the mistruths and anger have taken hold.

So I need you to help me start now to make sure we knock down the next big lie - false statements about global climate change - before they frame one of the most important debates we'll ever have in our country. And we need to start NOW fighting against the misinformation that the rightwing is already spreading to try to derail the bill i'm working on with Senator Barbara Boxer and our colleagues; we can't wait until the lies take hold again.

Believe me, I've learned this through hard experience - if you let the lies take hold, it gets harder and harder to root them out. Lies are weeds, choking out our debate, and we need to go after them hard and early to keep them from growing.*6

Last year, you fought back against the smears against Barack Obama and other Democrats with TruthFightsBack.com, and you made a difference. So TruthFightsBack.com is coming back, dedicated to telling the truth about climate change. We're going to start spreading the truth now, so that by the time we get well into the debate, the lies of the right will be exposed, and the truth will have a fighting chance.

We're going to track all the misinformation campaigns, so everyone will know the truth. But even more than that, we'll give you the tools you need to take the fight into your own hands. I'll be out there fighting every single day, but - bottom line - I can't do it without you. Without you out there fighting to spread the truth, making sure your friends and neighbors know it, making sure to make your voice heard at townhalls, making sure journalists hear from the truth and not just from the lies, the lies will take hold.

And the first thing I need you to do is help give us the resources we need to build the online tools you need to make this happen.

In 20 years, we can't look back and think, "If only we'd done a little bit more, this climate disaster could've been stopped." We don't have much time, and we have to strike now. It won't be easy - the status quo is always strong - so we all need to do everything we can.

But if we do, we can win.

And then, in 20 years, with a new clean energy economy powering unprecedented prosperity of the 21st century, we'll be able to look back on this time and know that we did it, that we fought and won a great victory for all of us.

We've got a lot of work to do, but we can do it.
