Sunday Listening, Part One

Most of us were born hearing well, but all of us must learn to listen well. Listening is a skill, an art that is in need of being cultivated.

Dr. Ralph Nichols, considered by many to be an authority on the subject, believes that we think four, perhaps five, times faster than we talk. This means that if a speaker utters one hundred twenty words a minute, the audience thinks at about five hundred words a minute. That difference offers a strong temptation to listeners to take mental excursions . . . to think about last night's bridge game or tomorrow's sales report or the need to get that engine tune-up before next weekend's trip to the mountains . . . then phase back into the speaker's talk.

Research at the University of Minnesota reveals that in listening to a ten-minute talk, hearers operate at only a twenty-eight percent efficiency. And the longer the talk, the less we understand, the less we track with our ears what somebody's mouth is saying. That could be downright frightening to guys like me who preach from forty to fifty minutes a crack! That also explains why some wag has described preaching as "the fine art of talking in someone else's sleep."

Good communication is tricky business. We are all busy people with heavy mental anchors dragging across our brains at every waking moment. It's hard work for any preacher to seize our attention, then hold it for an extended period of time---especially since we can think so much faster than he can talk.

Which brings up the seldom-mentioned secret of a good sermon. Aside from God's vital part in the whole thing, there are two crucial ingredients that make it happen. First, the one who speaks must speak well. Second, the one who listens must listen well. Neither is automatic. Both are hard work. I should also add that just because a Bible is open and religious words are being tossed around, there is no magical spell of sustained interest guaranteed. And difficult as it may be for us preachers to accept this, sincerity in the heart is no excuse for being dry, dull, and boring in the pulpit.

But let's think about the pew for a change. What can be done by the listener to keep the sermon interesting? Instead of thinking about how the preacher could improve, let's turn to the flip side and consider how we could improve our listening skills.

Democrats across Nevada and the rest of the country had a banner year in 2008. But Republicans bent on derailing the change you voted for won稚 let us rest, and so the 2010 election cycle has already begun.

The Nevada State Democratic Party, with the help of supporters like you, is already hard at work reelecting Sen. Harry Reid and Democrats up and down the ballot. As part of our early effort, NSDP hosted an incredibly successful organizing event last week, where more than 350 volunteers came out to show their support for Sen. Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) Director Ken Mayer will be awarded the Pope & Young Club~{!/~}s Lee Gladfelter Memorial Award, which recognizes a wildlife professional who has made significant contributions to bowhunting and wildlife conservation.

Mayer will be presented the national award on Friday, April 24, at the Pope & Young Club~{!/~}s Annual Awards banquet in Denver. Mayer, 56, is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and lifelong hunter with a passion for archery and bowhunting. Mayer~{!/~}s contributions to bowhunting and wildlife conservation have been noteworthy throughout his professional career, including:

Selected as 1999 Professional of the Year by the Western Section of The Wildlife Society;
Selected California Bowman Hunters Professional of the Year, 2002;

Solis: New programs, green energy will provide boost

That's what the job became on Thursday for U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis on her first official visit to Las Vegas as labor secretary. While in town for the afternoon, Solis spent more than an hour at Nevada Partners and the Culinary Training Academy on Lake Mead Boulevard in west Las Vegas.

But Solis wasn't there to taste academy students' spicy shrimp, chicken Parmesan or smoked tomato-provolone sandwich. She stopped by instead for a sampling of how the academy and training agency Nevada Partners combine efforts of both public and private groups, and she talked of more federal funds for similar training programs nationwide as the country grapples with rising unemployment.

As Solis toured the center and observed training areas ranging from housekeeping to sommelier classes, she ticked off new funding priorities that she said would help revive Nevada's economy and provide fresh job opportunities for the population Nevada Partners serves.

In a classroom of 17- and 18-year-olds studying for work life after high school, she remarked that a "big component of our recovery program is focused on you," and talked of a pending boost in summertime youth education programs.

In yet another classroom, a group of local dignitaries met with Solis to discuss green jobs. The Obama administration has allotted $500 million for eco-friendly industries, including contractors who weatherize public buildings and homes and manufacturers who make wind-farm turbines or solar panels.

"We had an Industrial Revolution, and now, for the 21st century, we're going to have a green revolution," Solis told the group, which included Chancellor Jim Rogers of the Nevada System of Higher Education, NV Energy Senior Vice President Tony Sanchez and Nevada AFL-CIO head Danny Thompson.

Nevada, with its abundant sunlight, wind and geothermal hot spots, is perfectly situated to take advantage of the new administration's emphasis on environmentally friendly industry, Solis said.

Steven Horsford, chief executive officer and president of the board of trustees for Nevada Partners and the state senator behind a major bill to create green jobs, said he was especially pleased at Solis's emphasis on green jobs.

"It's huge, because we have so many construction workers who are out of jobs or who will be struggling to keep their jobs as major projects such as CityCenter end," said Horsford, who also led Solis on her academy tour. "To have the opportunity to make Nevada the nation's leader on wind, geothermal and solar is huge, and it really shows there is a bright spot in all of this unfortunate despair we're faced with now. There are opportunities we can focus on."

Solis also said hospitality, health care and information technology will provide substantial jobs for Nevadans in the next decade.

Before she visited Nevada Partners and the Culinary Training Academy, Solis spoke to about 500 members of the Utility Workers Union of America at Bally's. The event was closed to the press, but one attendee said Solis spoke emotionally of her factory-worker parents and said the country must take care of the middle class and protect workers them from harm.

Solis's press secretary wouldn't disclose other stops in Las Vegas, but Mae Worthey, a spokeswoman for the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, said Solis visited the agency's Nevada JobConnect office on Maryland Parkway later in the afternoon. There, she spent about 15 minutes meeting with veterans and asking them how they felt about the services they received.

The Legacy of Learning, Part Two

Ignorance is not bliss. On the contrary, it is the breeding ground for fear, prejudice, and superstition, to name just a few. Knowledge is critical. The young nation of America saw the need for being knowledgeable . . . for perpetuating an educated, well-trained body of godly people who could proclaim God's message with intelligence, authority, and conviction. Our oldest institution of higher learning---founded only sixteen years after the landing at Plymouth---was established for the purpose stated on its cornerstone. That marker still stands near an iron gate that leads to the campus of Harvard University:

After God had carried us safe to New England and we had builded [sic] our houses, provided necessaries for our livelihood, reared convenient places for God's worship and settled the civil government, one of the next things we longed for and looked after was to advance learning and perpetuate to posterity, dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches when our present ministers shall lie in the dust.

This continued until European liberalism, with its subtle narcotic of humanism and socialism, began to paralyze the nerve centers of theological thought and educational philosophy. Doubt and despair replaced certainty and hope. Mental discipline, honed on the wheel of exacting academic requirements and intellectual integrity, began to lag. Permissiveness became the order of the day. This evolved into a mentality that now considers deep thought and thorough study a joke. Thank God, there are some exceptions. But they are precious few . . . especially among the saints.

To be sure, there are dangers connected with being knowledgeable. Solomon warns us of the worst in Ecclesiastes: pride---the wearying, futile pursuit of knowledge, a flesh trip that can cause a head to outgrow a heart. Mere intellectualism can be only "striving after wind" (Ecclesiastes 1:17).

But my single desire is to support the premise that knowledge, rather than being an enemy of the faith, is an ally . . . perhaps one of our strongest. I call upon C. S. Lewis to state my cause, and with him I rest my case. In his work, The Weight of Glory, Lewis writes:

If all the world were Christian it might not matter if all the world were uneducated. But, as it is, a cultural life will exist outside the Church whether it exists inside or not. To be ignorant and simple now---not to be able to meet the enemies on their own ground---would be to throw down our weapons, and to betray our uneducated brethren who have, under God, no defense but us against the intellectual attacks of the heathen.

Good philosophy must exist, if for no other reason, because bad philosophy needs to be answered. The cool intellect must work not only against cool intellect on the other side, but against the muddy heathen mysticisms which deny intellect altogether. Most of all, perhaps, we need intimate knowledge of the past . . . the learned life then is, for some, a duty.
