APIAVote is a national nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that encourages and promotes civic participation of Asian Pacific Islander Americans in the electoral and public policy processes at the national, state and local levels. Headquartered in Washington, D.C. , APIAVote has worked with over a dozen national* and 150 local organizations since 1996 on short-term campaigns.*1

Incorporated during the fall of 2005, APIAVote is focused on continuing its important work in the field to promote voter outreach and education activities, building a stronger research and policy component, and expanding local and national internal capacity building and strategic planning work necessary for long-term sustainability in the area of civic participation and voter empowerment.

THE POSITION:

The National Field Organizer and Trainer, under the direction of the Executive Director, is responsible for creating and implementing field plans, building and sustaining long term partnerships with local and national organizations, and training and building the capacity of volunteers and partners. In this role, this staff member will also serve as the coordinator for the APIAVote trainings and perform other duties as assigned.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The National Field Organizer will be responsible for:

Developing civic engagement, voter education and mobilization strategies in targeted areas
Helping identify APIAVote partners, coalitions, and volunteer leaders
Recruiting leadership and volunteers in selected areas
Training, mobilizing and managing volunteers in key organizing skills, such as voter education and get-out-the-vote techniques.
Developing education and training curriculum and coordinating trainings
Motivating volunteers to build and maintain civic engagement infrastructures
Coordinating select events (house parties, etc)
Coordinating with APIAVote partners, coalitions, networks, volunteers in get-out-the-vote activities in local communities.
QUALIFICATIONS:

The National Field Organizer must have:

Minimum of 5 years experience in electoral work and community organizing around issues
Ability in developing leaders and organizations in an organizing context, issues and campaign development, and training new organizers and leaders
Demonstrated experience in organizational assessment
Familiarity with and openness to different approaches in grassroots organizing
Extensive experience in organizing communities effectively with attention to detail and follow-through
Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability and success in working in coalitions with a diverse group of people
Strong facilitation and speaking skills
Ability to serve as an effective team leader while understanding team dynamics
Ability and willingness to travel extensively to conduct community outreach and organizing throughout the country
An entrepreneurial spirit since we are in the process of building this organization
Capacity to prioritize multiple and competing projects, manage complex workload, and meet deadlines
Ability to assist in drafting, designing, and preparing educational and campaign materials
Capability to take initiative and to solve problems independently or collaboratively as a member of a team
Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and on deadlines
Strong written, communication and organizational skills
Excellent administrative and computer skills
High level of personal energy and commitment to working on behalf of Asian American and Pacific Islanders and for social justice and social change
Substantive knowledge of Asian American and Pacific Islander community and its issues

It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren:

I went on a search to become a leader.
I searched high and low. I spoke with authority. People listened. But alas, there was one who was wiser than I, and they follow that individual.
I sought to inspire confidence, but the crowd responded, "Why should I trust you?"
I postured, and I assumed the look of leadership with a countenance that flowed with confidence and pride. But many passed me by and never noticed my air of elegance.
I ran ahead of the others, pointed the way to new heights. I demonstrated that I knew the road to greatness. And then I looked back, and I was alone.
"What shall I do?" I queried. "I've tried hard and used all that I know." And I sat down and pondered long.
And then, I listened to the voices around me. And I heard what the group was trying to accomplish. I rolled up my sleeves and joined in the work.
As we worked, I asked, "Are we all together in what we want to do and how to get the job done?"
And we thought together, and we fought together, and we struggled towards our goal.
I found myself encouraging the fainthearted. I sought the ideas of those too shy to speak out. I taught those who had little skill. I praised those who worked hard. When our task was completed, one of the group turned to me and said, "This would not have been done but for your leadership."
At first, I said, "I didn't lead. I just worked with the rest." And then I understood, leadership is not a goal. It's a way to reaching a goal.
I lead best when I help others to go where we've decide to go. I lead best when I help others to use themselves creatively. I lead best when I forget about myself as leader and focus on my group...their needs and their goals.

Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in partnership with the Council for Excellence in Government, will award seven $100,000 grants in 2007 for the purpose of replicating and disseminating successful government programs.

All units of government—federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial—are eligible to apply. Entries must be administered under the authority of one or more government entities and have been implemented prior to September 12, 2005. Innovative programs can encompass a multitude of policy areas: training employees, debt management, public health, and e-governance, to name a few.

One of the important accomplishment of Dr. Tony Lei as a famous Professor of Management is the research and findings on computer education, institutional management, and the art of leading of his three notable books entitled "Information Management", "Business Management", and " Management Behavior". "A good leader should acquire the ability of and execute the following seven management functions: 1. Planning: to plan important task project of this unit; 2. Organizing; to master the organoizational system of this unit; 3. Staffing: to recruit the appropriate staff members; 4. Directing: to direct the people on the staff of this unit; 5. Coodinating: to coordinate the benefits and conflicts of this unit in order to attain sound cooperation; 6. Representing: to reprent this unit in order to coordinate outside concerns and relationships; 7. Budgeting: to establish and control the budget of this unit; 8. Systematizing: to use management information system throuh computers and multimedia for our modern business," says Dr. Tony Lei.

"There are three models of leadership that a good leader, especially the leader of an association, may emphasize: A. Creative Leadership: The leader takes the most importance of holding the great principles to develop the future endeavor of this unit. "B. Humanity Leadership: the leader emphasizes the importance of his or her relationship with the abordinates. He or she motivates their work morality and spirit. "C. Democratic Leadership: The leader respects humanity and allows individual development to make his or her group members cooperate and work by division of labor with self-motion and self-revelation. Its specialties are:

Subordinates have a full opportunity to participate decisionmaking and to suggest good idea. 3. Dr. Lei presented also a Certificate of Recognition from U. S. Congressman Jon Porter to the President of Taiwan Benevolent Association of Las Vegas Sue Phelps. Sixteen original hard copeis of the RC 25 Resolution by Nevada Assembly and Senate were also presented by Dr. Tony Lei to each president of the 16 Chapters of TBAA through their Chaiperson Wendy Wu.

Proclamations from the Board Commissioners of Clark County of Nevada and the State of Nevada (through Assemblywoman Valerie Weber) were presented to Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) and Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei by both of the parties on July 30, 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada.*7

Ms. Wendy Yu-ping Wu completed successfully her term as the Chairperson of TBAA in the evening of July 30, 2005. The Chairmanship was transfered by her to Mr. I-Ta Liang at the "Fomosa Night" in Las Vegas, Nevda. Liang is now the 28th Chairman of TBAA.

One of the earliest attendants of the convention this year was the Representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States David Tawei Lee(Embassador of the Republic of China) on July 28, 2005.

Mr. Lo-Yu Sun, Board Advisor of Taiwan Benevolent Association of America (TBAA), held and host a farewell lunch party for the 28th Annual Confernce of TBAA at the Harbor Palace Seafood Restaurant on August 1, 2005 in Las Vegas.*8

Linda is a native Taiwanese. She was born in Tainan, Taiwan. At the age of 7, she came to the United States of America with her parents. Ms. Shyr is an immigrant and was raised in the southern California area. She is a Christian. She speaks Chinese, Taiwanese, and English.*4

Judge Mark R. Denton received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. in 1976. He was raised in Boulder City and graduated from Boulder High School in 1969. In 1973, Mark graduated with distinction from the University of Nevada, Reno. He completed ROTC and received a commission in the U.S. Army as reserve officer. While in college, Mark spent his junior year in Paris, France through an affiliate of UNR at the Universite de Paris.

Prior to his appointment to the bench on August 19, 1998, Mark had extensive judicial experience. He served as municipal court judge in Boulder City, Nevada for seven years. He was an arbitrator under the Court Annexed Arbitration Program of the Eighth Judicial District Court since its inception in 1992. He was an alternate Juvenile Court Referee and a Nevada Supreme Court settlement Judge. Currently, Mark sits as a judge on the Eighth Judicial District Court, handling civil cases. Mark was re-elected in November 2002.*1

Judge Denton and his wife of 29 years, Alice, have four children: Leslie Marie, 26, Marianne Yvette, 22, Jacqueline, 18, and Patrick, 13.*2

Judge Valorie J. Vega holds a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from the University of Southern California's Law Center. She received a Bechelor of Arts degree from CSU Northridge. She received her graduate studies certificate in Interpretation/Translation from UC Santa Barbara.

Judge Vega was appointed to District Court’s Department 2 on February 21, 1999 by Governor Kenny Guinn. She was appointed to Municipal Court in 1989 and was retained and re-elected by the voters until her resignation in 1999 to accept the District Court appointment. She is a former Clark County Deputy District Attorney from 1984 through 1989, prosecuting felony cases, and was instrumental in implementing the office’s first Sexual Assault and Child Abuse team. She was an associate attorney with the law firm of Sully and Lenhard from 1983 to 1984 and clerked for District Court Judge Carl Christensen from 1982 to 1983 and also clerked for the law firm of Brandenberg, Torribio and Brazelton in Los Angeles in 1982. Before attending law school, Judge Vega, fluent in Spanish, supervised interpreters for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Las Vegas from 1978 to 1979, where she set up testing and certification for court interpreters and did Spanish-English interpretation and translation.

Judge Vega is involved in her profession and community. She is a Board Member of the Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Southern Nevada as well as the Latin Chamber of Commerce. She is also a volunteer speaker for D.A.R.E. and the Clark County School District’s PAYBACK Program. Judge Vega is a member of the American Judges Association, the Nevada District Court Judges Association, the National Association of Women Judges, the Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys, the Clark County Bar Association, the Latino Bar Association, Hispanics in Politics, and the National Association of Latino Elected Officials. Judge Vega is a member of the Nevada Supreme Court’s Committees on Public Trust and Confidence, Certification of Court Interpreters, and Judicial Ethics. She was honored with the 1992 "Women of Achievement Award" from the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and recognized by the Latin Chamber of Commerce as the "Hispanic of the Year" in 1995 and recipient of the 2001 Community Pride Portraits of Success Award from KLAS-TV and its Community Partners. Judge Vega is married, has one child and has been a resident of Southern Nevada since 1978.*4

A celebration Dinner Party was held by President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI to welcome Judges Mark Denton and Valorie Vega as Vice Presidents of the Institute on December 8, 2003 at the Steak House, Binion's Horseshoe Club in Las Vegas. "Washington Business and Technology Institute has contributed substantially and significantly to help improve the quality of life for the residents and visitors of Nevada since its establishment on January 8, 1996. "The mission of this School emphasizes the humanitarian orientation of public administration and the social responsibility of business management. Through academic entrepreneurship, we expect the School's endeavors to be achieved based on the human spirit, led by Chairperson Elaine Chao of WBTI," said Senator Dina Titus, Adjunct Professor of Administrative Strategies in GSBPA.*17

Dina Titus was born May 23, 1950 in Thomasville, Georgia. She graduated from College of William and Mary with A.B. She received her M. A. and Ph. D. degrees from University of Georgia and Florida State University, respectively. She is a Senator and Minority Floor Leader of the Nevada Senate. Dina is also a professor of Political Science at UNLV.*6

"Asian Pacific American have made profound contributions to American life, including the arts, economy, education, science, technology, politics, and sport. Since becoming governor in 1998, a high priority of mine has been to ensure that all Nevadans have a real chance at attaining part of the American dream: access to jobs that provide a livable wage. I am pleased to report that the state of our economy remains strong. By courting industries worldwide and introducing them to the many benefits of doing business in Nevada, we have been able to create 347,300 new jobs—a 36.9 percent increase—since I took office. Of those new jobs, 269,200 were created after the post-Sept. 11 low-point in January 2002.

Our state economy continues to thrive. Nevada’s current unemployment rate of 4.2 percent remains below the national average, a distinction our state has sustained for nearly four years. Recently released figures show that 3,400 new jobs were created in June alone, bringing employment growth so far in 2006 to 24,300.

While the rest of the nation faces numerous economic challenges, Nevada is flourishing, offering a superior quality of life for our residents. We all know that economic factors can change very quickly, but if we continue to work together to make Nevada a promising place for new businesses and people to relocate, the Silver State can anticipate a healthy economy in the foreseeable future.

Penghu archipelago is a window facing the sea. Penghu is a county of Taiwan. It is beautiful!

The Penghu archipelago is a strand of one hundred resplendent pearls hanging from the tropic of cancer. Created by silent and hidden turmoil, the inky black, brown, and crimson basalt retain the wrinkles of volcanic lava rising up from the seabed thousands of millions of years ago.*1

Solidified ino basalt, the islands are covered with lofty and steep ridges. The long forgotten basalt has many expressions: some tower with pride; some radiate freely; some lay down restfully. Huge waves disappear at the feetof giant rocks, reflecting the dignity of the islands. Lively with harbors lined up one after another, shorelines wriggle like ribbons dancing against the wind while guiding migratory birds to southern habitats.

Assisted by the colorful ocean, fine beaches collect dazzlingly white shells and ancient corals. The lack of rain does not prevent the low smooth grassland from being luxuriant. Indian Blanket and the other cactuses bloom extravagantly, ignoring the barrenness of the land.

At night, the village lamps and fishing lights outline the islands like stars on a star chart.

Penghu is very sunny.*2

U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, a Taiwanese-born immigrant, encouraged Asian-Americans to speak up, and to work on their communication skills during a summit hosted by the Asian Pacific Americans Federal Career Advancement.*1

While speaking at the career advancement summit dedicated to Asian-American federal workers, the U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao said that it is vital for Asian Americans to acquire the skills of marketing, human relations and report briefing in order to advance in their career with the federal government. Chao also praised the Asian-American work force for its contribution to the development of the U.S. economy.

At the same time, Chao emphasized that it is important for Asian-Americans to improve both their verbal and written communications skills. Chao says that Asian-Americans must learn about the American ideology of team-spirit in the work environment, while also participating in meaningful community work.

The latest statistics show that Asian-Americans currently make up 4.8% of all federal employees. Chao is hoping that the career advancement summit will help Asian-Americans improve upon their career skills, while also furthering their understanding of the different methods for advancing into high positions within the government.

Ever since Chao took office with the advent of the Bush administration, she has dedicated herself to raising public awareness of the minority Asian workforce struggling to advance in the American society.*2

Secretary Chao received her B. A. degree in Economics with straight A's for all her four years at the famous Mount Holyoke College in New England. She obtained her M. B. A. degree from Harvard University in 1979. She also studied at M.I.T., Dartmouth College, and Columbia University.
