We wish that a pure fountain may prosper and enrich our splendid and golden country through: the power of public service that based on 'knowledge is the power of righteousness'; the advancement of technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation; and the spirit that 'knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service.' On the very top floor of the mension at the Graduate School of New York University, I was impressed by the crowded traffic and the brilliant night scenes down on the ground. And looking at the groups of mansions standing under the heavenly sky at this Fifth Street reminded me that: All these golden Squares and proserity at the time of the May Flower period was nothing but an empty land. For our Las Vegas, we've realized the same story of development and prosperity," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) on the Grand Openning of the Las Vegas City Park. "It made me remember the story of the next dynasty King after the Emperor Ching. Impressed by watching the greatness of the Emperor with his large marching team on the road one day at his young age, the young boy said, 'Do it brightly and we should make it the same also, excellency! (Meaning explanation for 'Yu Wei Jer Yi Loi Hsie' in Chinese.)' Nowaday, the entrepreneurship made America great is not just important for individuals, but it is also critical for a company or a country." The above initiative spirit of the United States is originated from the first paragraph of the Preface of a text book written by Tony Tung-tien Lei entitled "Managemnt Behavior" published by Buffalo Publishing Inc. in 1989 (2nd Edition). Three of his text books "Business Management," "Information Management," and "Management Behavior" had been used by Dr. Tony Lei as a reference book in National Taiwan University, National Chengchi University, and National Chunghsing University from 1975 through 1990.*5 ***** From now on, any definition of a successful life must include serving others. ---George Bush ***** When people are serving, life is no longer meaningless. ---John Gardner ***** One need not be a servant to be able to serve. ---Victor Frankl -------------------------------------------- References *1. Some good leading skills for executives and leaders By Tiffany ChangManagement is a term still not be well defined. A current definition is that management is the attainment of organizational objectives with and through people. A manager requires a special set of skills and abilities in order to attain objectives in a complex organization with and through many different types of individuals.*1 "Better executive decision and development of good leaders are important in any age or in any organization, but the changing face of business and government makes both more important today than perhaps they have ever been before. The decentralization of private companies, public agencies, amd even community groups has spread the responsibility for decision-making more broadly at the same time that it has created greate accountability for each individual decision made," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute.*2 "The following skills for executives and leaders are helpful: (1) When you are thrust into a responsible position with accentual warning and even less preparation, clear headed thinking about why you have been appointed to an office and what those who have placed you there expect of you is prerequisite to clear-minded, if not predictable, decision making. (2) Ask what actions are called for in the position, what strategies have worked in past, and how others have previously responded to the challenges you now face. (3) Realizing your leadership potential depends on making a match between your vision and an organization. The challenge is to find the right opportunity, pick the right moment, and make the right move. (4) Remember personal traits are important to executives and leaders, but such leadership skills as persuasive speaking, persistence in achieving one's agendas, and personal confidence can be developed in office, much of leadership is a learned capacity that need not be limited by birthright or prior experience. (5) Moving yourself through varied and increasingly responsible management experiences develop the personal confidence and diverse skills required to master different, more ambitious arrays of tasks. (6) Pick your associates well, back them fully, empower them with boh accountability and responsibility, and they will produce far more than you ever will to achieve on your own."*3 There are some more tips to be added: (1) Knowing where you want to go and what your values are can be essential to getting there, to ensuring that all of your interests and concerns. (2) Recognizing people's diverse motives for participating is an essential first step in mobilizing their contributions. (3) If you expect those who work for you to exercise their own judment, provide them with the decision-making expenence now. (4) If your leadership depends on theirs, devloping responsibiliy and sharing stories is a foundation upon which it will reside. (5) A new position of leadership will engender the expenience you lack on arrival, and seeking feedback on your performance in the position will ensure that you take advantage of the experience. (6) Thinking strategically when confronted with a crsis or challenge is a learned skill that requires sustained seasoning.*4 At least there are two points of view about the way knowledge aquuired in business is or can be translated into a real-world environment. It has been suggested by business that MBA programs of many schools arenot teaching necessary skills fro managerial effectiveness. Development of skills requiired, finding the problems that need to be solved, planning for attainment of desired results,, and carring out operating plans one they are made are skills not emphasized in MBA program of many coleges. Another skill that appears to be lacking is the ability to achieve results through people in organizations. This is why many schools are incorporating a behavioral approach in management rectify this deficit.*5 -------------------------------------------------------------------- References *1. To serve, we need only a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1It is obvious that man or woman is himself or herself a traveler. The good purpose for mankind in this world is not "to have and to hold" but "to give and serve." The service that we render to other people is really like the rent we pay for our room on this earth. We are sure that the people who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** From now on, any definition of a successful life must include serving others. ---George Bush ***** When people are serving, life is no longer meaningless. ---John Gardner ***** One need not be a servant to be able to serve. ---Victor Frankl*2 It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: Twenty-five centuries ago, Lao-tse, a Chinese sage, offered this profound insight; "The reason why rivers and seas receives the homage of a hundred mountain streams is that they keep below them. Thus they are able to reign over all the mountain streams. So the sage, wishing to be above men, putteth himself below them; wishing to be before them, he putteth himself behind them. Thus, though his place be above men, they do not feel his weight; though his place be before them, they do not count it an injury." So it is with humankind. Those who wish to yield the greatest influence will unselfishly position themselves below others, so as to serve them better. Bruce Barton told a parable two seas in Palestine that expounds on the wisdom of Lao-tse. One sea is flesh. Fish live in it. Trees and bushes grow near it. Children splash and paly in it. The river Jordan flows into this sea with sparkling water from the hills. People build their homes near it. Every kind of life is happier because it is there. The same river Jordan flows south into another sea. Here there are no fish, no green things, no children playing, no homes a building. Stale air hangs above its waters, and neither man nor beast will drink of it. What makes the difference between these neighbor seas? Not the Jordan River. It empties the same good water into both. Nor is the soil or the countryside. The differnece is that the Sea of Galilee receives water but does not keep it. For every drop that flows in, another drop flows out. The giving and receiving go on in equal measure. The other sea hoards its income. Every drop it gets it keeps. The Sea of Galilee lives and lives. The other sea gives nothing. It is called the Dead Sea. There are also two kinds of people in this world---those Dead Sea people who take without giving back, and the givers who remain fresh and vibrant by freely sharing of themselves. ------------------------------------- References *1. Rawson-Neal Mental Health Hospital Dr. Kenny C. Guinn*1When I was first elected governor in 1998, a real area of concern for me was the lack of appropriate funding for mental health in Nevada. During my time in office, I have worked with the Legislature to increase funding for mental health in our state. Since 1999, mental health funding in Nevada has risen an average of 29 percent per fiscal year, and developmental services spending has increased almost 28 percent per fiscal year. Certainly, one important measure of our progress is the new Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital, which had its Grand Opening on August 28. This new, state-of-the-art facility will provide 190 new beds to care for mentally ill individuals in Southern Nevada. The insufficient number of available facilities and beds in Clark County for those with mental health issues has been a targeted area of concern. The completion and opening of the Rawson-Neal facility is a major move for Nevada stepping up to the plate and delivering on its promises to those in need of mental health care. A prominent feature of the Rawson-Neal Hospital will be the Recovery Café, a cafeteria-style restaurant operated by recovering patients. Residents of the facility will prepare and serve a wide array of foods and beverages available to staff and visitors. The café is designed to enable recovering patients to be more independent by providing them with valuable job training that is essential to their reintroduction into society. The Recovery Café is another segment of the state’s existing Psychosocial Rehabilitation program that provides patients with total recovery care, training for reintroduction into society, and assistance with job placement. The café is slated to open later this year. I am proud of the accomplishments of Nevada’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Division of Mental Health and Development Services (MHDS), and many other public and private partners, whose efforts have helped transform our plans into reality. A debt of gratitude is owed to DHHS Director Michael Willden and MHDS Administrator Dr. Carlos Brandenburg for their steadfast dedication and contributions to this project. The Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital is good news for patients, the Las Vegas medical community, and the state of Nevada. It is another sign of progress and a good reason to be optimistic about the long-term social health and stability of the Silver State. There is much still to be done to improve the way we treat and care for this segment of society, and I am proud to say we have made real progress. ------------------------------------------- Reference *1. Google's bidding! To become more effective online communication By Tiffany Chang"Google, the world's most-used Web search engine, may close bidding in its auction-style initial public offering as soon as 2 p.m. today, moving it closer to completing what may be the most biggest-ever internet-company IPO," reported Brett Cole on August 17, 2004.*19 "Google co-founders Larry Page, 31, and Sergey Brin, 30, chose an auction-style IPO to give individual investors an opportunity to buy shares alongsid institutions, the company said in SEC filings. Google's IPO auction may cut investment-banking fees to 1.5 percent, said Michael Madden, principal at New York-based buyout firm Questor Management Co. Google makes most of its money by linking advertisements to search results. That and other forms of advertising constitute 98 percent of Google's revenue, the company said in an SEC filling," continued the reporter.*20 *****To be more successful for your Web site, you need to be favored by the most famous search engine services leaders like Google! (Google.com), Google! (Google.cn since 2005), Yahoo! (Yahoo.com), Aol! (Aol.com), WebCrawler! (WebCrawler.com), linkInfoseek! (Infoseek.com), among others.***** "We need individuals who can restore hope and create positive changes in our society. It is our responsibility as educator to produce leaders who will take that initiative. To do so, we must be at the level of the individual student and alumnus. Utimately, the school must strengthen the student's intellect and create a better, bolder, and more ehical thinker who will yield the greatest impact on the community in roles as educators therapists, and business persons," siad Nancy Magnusson Fagan at the time when she was the Dean of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, Pepperdine University.*1 Today, one of the important slogan of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) is: To become more effective online communication in every online venue! Starting from 1980, the author had been benefit deeply from two main courses of the program of Doctorate Degree of Education (Ed. D.) in Institution Management of Pepperdine University.*2 They were: (1) ED 740 Computer Utilization in Institutional Management; and (2) ED 730 Methodological Approaches to Educational Research and Evaluation. The technical skills and knowledge of information management had sharpened his abilities of the research, management, and teaching in a national organization of information management and the graduate school of business administration. After many years of administrative resposibility in higher policy-making organization and teaching the graduate school of business administration in famous universities, the author concentrated effort to study and acquire the knowledge and utilization of effective information management in the United States of America. That was ten years after he received his M. B. A. from Pepperdine. His two years of computer consulting job at the Computer Laboratory of the Graduate School of Education and Pshchology and the School of Business and Management of Pepperdine University advanced the practical experience on information management for him to complete his dessertation entitled "A Study of the Impact of Enrollment in a Computer Science Class on Mathematics Scores and Attendance in a Secondary School". He taught information management as an Associate Professor for five years at the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chunghsing University before he became a Fellow of Management for the former Dean of the School of Business and Management of Pepperdine University in 1991. He received his M. B. A. and Doctor of Education in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University in 1969 and 1990, respectively. Indeed, business achievement is the new yardstick of success in today's society. Therefore, business has become not only the fastest growing major in undergraduate institutions but also in graduate school of famous universities, nationally and internationally. The emphasis of the online communication skills and the quantitative analysis techniques with computers is one of the most important study for the art of success to the business students, professionals, executives, and owners. In many ways, business school is at the center of this cultural phenomenon. For some, the business school is the passport to the boardroom, the ticket to the top of the corporate ladder. these schools, nationally and internationally, pump out the new generation of business leaders by hundreds of thousands. "They are the pipeline of raw material with which the nation's --- and the world's --- leading business build the future. And MBAs are not limited to the traditional corporate world: From Wall Street to Madison Avenue, from Sand Hill Road to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, today's MBAs lead organizations large and small, in every conceivable industry. They are the executives and entrepreneurs who power the economy."3 "UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN LIVING IN A CAVE, you've seen enormous changes in communications technology over the past two decades. From orbiting satellites routing long distance phone calls to email to undreamed-of growth of the Internet, the age of communicating online, using computers and networks, is upon us all," stated at the first paragraphy of the 'Introduction' of the book, "How to say it online: everything you need to know to master the new language of cyberspac," written by Kim Baker and Sunny Baker.*4 "And what could be better news? To keep in touch, there's nothing faster or cheaper than email. To gain access to information and people, the power of online communication expands your reach from the local to the global. To meet new friends and even romance a potential life partner, online venues provide rich opportunities (if you know the right things to say and the best way to say them). At school, the Internet places volumes of knowledge on ever subject at your fingertips, and at work, computer networks make business communication more efficient than ever." *5 Whether you are in business or in non-profit organization, you need to have a Web site. This seems to be a common wisdom in now- a-days. Think seriously about the needs of your market before you go onto the Web to make more money for business, to develop better non-profit organization, or to contribute to more community service. "It's hard to believe that Fred's Service Station really needs a Web Site to reap new profits. However, for some businesses and professional service firms, the Internet and web to gether offer viable marketing and distribution opportunities. Software companies, online magazines, and email order businesses can do quite well from the Web --- if the owners know how to say the right things on their sites. The Secrets of a Successful Web Site: Just having a site on the Web will do almost nothing to sell your products or services. To promote your Web site, there are three things you must do: (1). You must register your Web site with the best search engines. (2). You should consider using the many free and not free advertising opportunities on the Web. (3) You should search the Web regularly for competitive and related sites, where you can attach a link to your site." *5 To be more successful for your Web site, you need to be favored by the most famous search engine services like Google! (Google.com), Google! (Google.cn since 2005), Yahoo! (Yahoo.com), Aol! (Aol.com), WebCrawler! (WebCrawler.com), linkInfoseek! (Infoseek.com), among others. "There is no longer any such thing as a purely national economy. The rest of the world is just too big to ignore, either as a market or as a competitor. If business schools do nothing other than to train their students to think internationally, they would have accomplished an important task," said John Young, CEO, Hewlett-Packard.*7 Innovation is the key to success, managers are looking everywhere in the global organization for new ideas. Modern companies would view Information technology (IT) as a major competitive differentiator. Strategic businesses emphazise the ueses of information technology for management. International companies develop their global IT platforms by integrating worldwide hardware, software, and Internet-based network architecture. Commuunication technology, for example the teleconferencing and computer networks, is making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on project. Many business are becoming global companies and moving toward transnational e-business strategies in which they integrate the global business activities of their subsidiaries and headquarters. The international dimemsions of managing global e-business technologies include dealing with cultural, political, and geoeconomic challenges posed by various countries for global marketplace. The e-business technologies are changing the distribution, relatonships, resources, and responsibilities of managers. Information Technology is helping managers of e-business to eliminate layers of amangement, enabling more collaborative forms of management, providing them with significant information technology resources, and confront them with major e-business and e-commerce challenge. Innovation is the key to success, managers are looking everywhere in the global organization for new ideas. Modern companies would view Information technology (IT) as a major competitive differentiator. Strategic businesses emphazise the ueses of information technology for management. International companies develop their global IT platforms by integrating worldwide hardware, software, and Internet-based network architecture. Commuunication technology, for example the teleconferencing and computer networks, is making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on project.*8 In order to keep the online universe a productive, safe, communicative environment, it is interesting and worth to post the ten commandments for computer ethics. They were created by the Computer Ethics Institute: (1). Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people. (2). Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work. (3). Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's files. (4). Thou shalt not use a computer to steal. (5). Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness. (6). Thou shalt not use or copy softwear for which you have not paid. (7). Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorization. (8). Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output. (9). Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you write. (10). Thou shalt use a computer in ways that show consideration and respect. A sucessful businessperson always know the old rule that says "It's easier to keep an existing customer than to find a new one." In online customer relationships, this rule is just as important. Your goal should not only to get new visitors, but to cultivate your customer base to yield repeat sales, services, and referrals from satisfied purchasers, clients, and patronagers. "Besides a good product or service, there are only three things you need for successful online customer relations: strong communication, common courtesy, and exemplary customer service. Unfortunately, these old-fashioned values are often missing in many companies' online promotional communication." *9 President Andrew Benton of Pepperdine University took the opportunity to give the Grduate Schools Board of visitors a sneak preview of the campus in last May. The president, along with Dean of the business school Dr. Linda Livingstone, hosted several special guests including David Mount, Mrs. Reva Graziadio, who was accompanied by her daughter and son-in-law, Aliva and Stevan Calvillo. In Addition, President Andrew Benton welcome former U. S. President Gerald Ford. "It is so right that he is here today, becuase when he serve on our Board of Regents we were envisioning this project," President Benton remarked.*2 President Ford understood what the completion of the Drescher Graduate School meant. More importanly he understood that the project reprents all that is good about a generation of people who continue to build a great America. "I think our country should be proud of the fact that we proved that free enterprise, free election opportunities, free economic systems could prevail over state-run, governmen controlled nations," said President Ford. "How can we leave the world in a better conditiion than we found it? Near the top of such answers is this: Build a teaching institution that is grounded in timeless truths. Or, as our mission statement expresses it, 'Pepperdine is a Christian unversity committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership.' That is a mission worth investing a life in," pointed out President Benton at his message on the "Pepperdine People".*10 To encourage a good writing and to inspire a good idea, we must have good readers and sincere friends!*11 One of the examples has been shown at the bottom paragraphs of this feature article. "People worry about the huge amount of creativity that is wasted---lost forever---because talented people are prevented from giving their best by their lack of ability to influence others effectively," wrote Dr. Ken Blanchard in the 'Foreword' of the book entitled "Winning Ways," written by Dick Lyles.*12 "The business world has changed; organizations are getting flatter and more networked. Today, the key to success is one's ability to exercise peer leadership. The most successful individuals shine because of their ability to influence, empower, and energize others. In essence, they embody the principles and practices of Winning Ways." "Rapid changes in technology and global competition have combined to reshape the corporate landscape. Corporate management has responnded to these changes by iniatating sweeping changes. The introduction of new technology may be touted as a productivity booster and turn out instead to be a total bust. Whatever the problem may be, you're the one who has to deal with it on a daily basis. Even when new ideas are well thought out, there are still problems in putting them into practice within your group," George Fuller wrote in the 'Introduction' of his book, "Win/win management: leading people in the new workplace."*13 There are lots of common headaches most of supervisors and leaders have to confront. "It's easy to understand how the broad scope these problems can easily lead to a less than steller attitude toward your job. However, adoping a sense of futility only serve to make matters worse. On the other hand, maintain a positive attitude helps you place things in perspective and can make coping eith problems a lot easier to do."*14 To initiate our programs more effectively for the people and communities who are interested to participate the programs, we need to emphasize the spirit of positive attitude and positive thinking. The following are our golden words of wisdom which are worth reading collected by the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI): ***"Few things help an individual more than to place responsibility upon him and to let him know that you trust him." --- Booker T. Wang, is the Regent of Pacific Lutheran University and Chairman of the Wang Center LLC. "Tony, I am sending Peter's proposal for your review. Peter's proposal reflects his dream(and mine too) of many years. If successfully executed, it could help educate hundreds of millions kids of K-12 as well as adults. It would benefit THE MANKIND greatly. Read it and think what you can help," wrote Dr. Bob Ni.*17 He and Dr. Wang are all alumni of the first class of Tunghai University. "My Dearest Dr. Tony, What a wonderful and thoughtful suprise I opened the envelope and your most gracious offer to us inside. Trecia is travelling in New York and I'm still in LA here working. So we will be unable to accept your gift (A trip to visit Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, and National Parks by WBTI). However we shall treasure in our hearts your constant rememberance of us. My dear friend Dr. Tony, I and Trecia thank you again and we value and keep safe our friendship. Our friendship love and thanks. Liz and Trecia," wrote Dr. Liz Kent a letter with a beautiful thanks card by "Today I Thought of You" to him. We wish that a pure fountain may prosper and enrich our splendid and silver country through: the power of public service that based on knowledge is the power of rightousness; the advancement of technology, entreprenueship, and innovation; and the spirit that knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service.*7 "Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) has endeavored to academic research, community service, and humane spirit since its establishment in January 8, 1996. Under the spiritual leaderhip of its Chairperson, U. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, WBTI has encouraged, designed, and implemented many outstanding events and projects for the enrichment of the lives of Nevada's visitors and residents. Through its honors to distinguished individuals of the country, WBTI has helped promote a vision and practice for Nevada to be a better place for residence and business," said Nevada Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani. "It's our pleasure to invite a famous person of Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani's excellenct caliber whose expertise, integrity, and good personal traits will bring this Institute wih a perspective of millennium," said President Dr. Tony Lei of Washington Business and Technology Institute on August 24, 2006. Governor Kenny Guinn of Nevada believes that we are wise to expand our marketing efforts and focus on developing markets in places such as Asia ---China-U.S. pact may help spur Sino-LV flights By Chris Jones and GSBPA of WBTI*1We are pleased to post the following report from thr largest newspaper in Nevada -- "Las Vegas Review-Journal": Tuesday, July 27, 2004 Copyright @ Las Vegas Review-Journal China-U.S. pact may help spur Sino-LV flights By CHRIS JONES GAMING WIRE So much for one Great Wall. A landmark aviation agreement completed this weekend removed one of the last roadblocks to widespread travel between China and the United States. On Monday, the state's top tourism official said he now believes passenger and cargo flights could regularly connect Nevada and mainland China within the next two years.*2 "It's huge and exciting," Bruce Bommarito, executive director of the Nevada Commission on Tourism, said of Saturday's announced agreement between the two nations. "We didn't know the details, but we knew both governments have been working toward this. It really confirms ... that China is the next big market" for inbound international tourism within the United States. While in Beijing this weekend, U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta and Civil Aviation Administration of China Minister Yang Yuanyuan finalized an accord to allow five additional airlines from each country to serve the U.S.-China market over the next six years. No airline has yet committed to service between mainland China and Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport, but Bommarito believes such an announcement will come soon. That confidence is based upon recent conversations between Nevada leaders, members of the Chinese government and various travel-related businesses in Asia. During a fall visit to China, Bommarito said a Civil Aviation Administration of China leader told him and Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt the start of passenger service here is inevitable. "His closing comment to us was, `It's not a matter of if we will fly to Nevada. It's a matter of when,' " Bommarito said. Visas remain a major obstacle to Chinese tourism, however. The United States does not place a hard limit on the number of Chinese travelers to enter the country, though visitor volume is effectively slowed by the government's requirement that all Chinese complete a visa interview prior to visiting the United States. Bommarito said U.S. embassies in China are adding more workers to conduct those interviews, though the demand outweighs their current ability to quickly process applicants. Bommarito previously said pending requirements for biometric passports could ease the visa application process for Chinese citizens within the next few years. In June, Nevada became the first state to open a government-sanctioned tourism office in China to better position the state should Chinese travel be liberalized. Saturday's agreement will allow 195 new weekly flights for each country -- 111 by all-cargo carriers and 84 by passenger airlines -- growing to 249 weekly flights at the end of a six-year phase-in period, the Transportation Department said. Fourteen such flights will be available for new U.S. passenger services on Aug. 1 this year, including Northwest Airlines' new daily service between Detroit and Guangzhou and United Airlines' new daily nonstop service between Chicago and Shanghai.*3 The above report was also shown on the lasvegas.com early this morning. Governor Kenny Guinn of Nevada reminds us that tourism is the bedrock of Nevada's economy. To expand and diversify our domestic and international markets are absolutely essential to our long-term economic growth and stability.*4 The annual "Governor's Conference on Tourism" was held by Governor Kenny Guinn of Nevada at Caesears Palace on December 15-17, 2003. He joined the members of the Commission on Tourism to examine the latest tourism industry issue and trends. The theme was "Celebrating Deversity". It was chosen to draw attention to Nevada's efforts to broaden both its tourism product and market. The Conference on December 15-17 was held in celebrating the diversity that would make the Silver State a perennial leader in worldwide tourism.*5 Governor Kenny Guinn and Lt. Govenor Lorraine Hunt said that Nevada's tourism industry must continue to expand its offerings and reach out to diverse markets that range from outdoor enthusiasts to residents of the world's most populous nation. Speaking at the general session of the Governor's Conference on Tourism at Caesars Palace, he and she each praised Nevada's continuing efforts to supplement its gaming-based core with non-gaming amenities such as shopping, dinning, and outdoor recreation.*6 "I can't overstate the significance of China's potential as a visitor market for Nevada," Lt. Governor Hunt said. "I found modern cities rife with elements of Western culture such as Starbucks Coffee, MTV, the Rat Pack-era music of Frank Sinatra, etc. Up to 10 percent of the country's approximately 1.4 billion residents can now afford to travel overseas, which has positioned China as Nevada's "newest and most-modern market" for tourism."*7 Governor Guinn expresses that he can not overemphasize the significance and importance of bringing attention to all the attractions to Nevada at a time when it faces unprecedented competition for gaming customers. He believes that we are wise to expand our marketing efforts and focus on developing markets in places such as Asia. It is significant for him to point out that in addition to gaming, Nevada has phenomenal cultural, historic, and recreational resources that we must continue to promote. The Governor emphasizes that for our state's economy to thrive, all of the Silver State's tourism opportunities must be effectively marketed to both domestic and international visitors.*8 Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt points out that she sees the will in the Chinese people and elected officials to make more opportunities and conviences for them to travel America. "They know they want to participate in the world economy," said the Lt. Governor.*9 On May 18, 2000 Lt. Governor Lorriane Hunt of Nevada lead (led) a delegation from Nevada to Taipei of the Republic of China. "This is important to Nevada in areas beyond just our tourism industry. Taiwan enjoys a growing economy with considerable technological advancement and as such, they are one of the world's top 15 trading nations. And with Nevada's total exports exceeding one billion dollars in 1999 alone, our local businesses stand to benefit as the Taiwanese market continues to prosper and expand," Lt. Governor of Nevada Hunt pointed out in Taipei.*10 "The Nevada Commission on Tourism believes it is vital to establish a presence in Taiwan in order to represent our tourism destinations to this emerging world travel market. Taiwan's capital, Taipei, has a working population of four million, with a youthful, technologically oriented work force. There is tremendous potential for building tourism among this sector," said Hunt.*11 "Similar to the new direction of the government in Taiwan, we are seeking new horizons for the economy of Nevada. Building mutally beneficial relationships with Taiwan, and other foreign countries, will create the demand for direct, regularly scheduled flights. Our work will help Nevada establish contacts for lucrative business and convention visitors from around the world that will form the foundation for a new pillar in the Nevada economy."*12 Las Vegas, Nevada, and Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) extend their heartily welcome to the business, tourism, and investment from Asian countires to boom the tourism and ecomomy of this silver state. -------------------------------------------------- References *1. Some good personal traits for an individual to be successful in business and some golden words of wisdom for positive thinking By Tiffany Chang"Most business professionals will now have to rely on computer-generated information to perform effectively in their jobs. However, in order to make informed and responsible decisions they must also understand the processes used by computer in generating the information," wrote James O. Hicks Jr.*11 "Business people are interested in how to put the computers to work, and how to build and use information systems." "After an investigative research on a person's character, scholars found that personal traits play a very important role in helping business executives and leaders to be successful. They found out that persons who are leaders should have wisdon and talent. These people have a broader interest and aptitude. They are good in self expression and public communication. Possibly, the most vivid fact to be felt by everyone is that, these persons all have a strong inner desire to pursue business accomplishment and have their good performance recognized," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). "Among various business organizations, a research was conducted on the work performance of the American college graduates. It revealed that the following personal traits are important for the success of their business: (1) Ability to get along with people. (2) Ability to get things done. (3) Intelligence. (4) Desire for advancement. (5) Human relations skills. (6) Leading and administrative abilities. (7) Communication skills. (8) Ability to take important task. (9) Judgment. (10) Responsibility. (11) Decisions. (12) Adaptability. (13) Dependability. (14) Loyalty. (15) Vision. (16) Imagination."*1 As a supervisor or manager inbusiness, there are certain techniques that you can use to improve your effectiveness to have telephone conversational skills: "(1) Answer your phone promptly. (2) Identify yourself and your company immediately. (3) Be friendly. (4) Have all your necessary resources available. (5) Indicate your regret or appreciation when applicable. (6) Use caller's name if it's offered. (7) Express your willingness to help. (8) Don't interrupt your customer. (9) Get as much information as you can. (10) Be understandable in your communication. (11) Be accurate and complete when giving information. (12) Be easy to deal with."*2 We would also like to list 12 effective and 13 ineffective telephone techniques in business. A. 12 effective talent : (1) Smile. (2) Speak clearly and concisely. (3) Be enthusiatic. (4) Lower your voice pitch (5) Talk positive. (6) Be prepared for objections. (7) Talk directly into the mouthpiece. (8) Consider your customer's personality. (9) Speak in terms of benefits. (10) Discuss rather than tell. (11) Always thank the listener for his time. (12) Follow up if necessary."*3 B. 13 ineffective telephone skills are: (1) Frowning. (2) Muttering. (3) Sounding tired.(4) Speaking in monotone. (5) Being negative. (6) Being over confident. (7) Holding the telephone under your chin. (8) Rambling. (9) Making accusatory remarks. (10) Arguing. (11) Hanging up abruptly. (12) Forgetting to thank the listener. (13) Try to talk and do something else at the same time."*4 To be successful in business, we need to have positive thinking traits. There are 12 personal traits that characterize a positive thinker: Optimism, Enthusiam, Belief, Intelligence, Courage, Integrity, confidence, Judgement, Persistence, Liveliness, Vision, and Desire to excel.*5 Develop a clear vision of our prefered future, then get focused on key activities and efforts that take us in that direction. We shall see performance gains, achieve our goals, and have a happier and more successful practice. By persuing our own personal strategic plans with love and service, we will increase our energies, motivations, satisfactions, happiness, and the worthy value of our lives in business. The Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) has put effort in spreading the golden words of wisdom for positive thinking in the business and public administration world.*6 "People worry about the huge amount of creativity that is wasted---lost forever---because talented people are prevented from giving their best by their lack of ability to influence others effectively," wrote Dr. Ken Blanchard in the 'Foreword' of the book entitled "Winning Ways," written by Dick Lyles.*7 "The business world has changed; organizations are getting flatter and more networked. Even when new ideas are well thought out, there are still problems in putting them into practice within your group," George Fuller wrote in the 'Introduction' of his book, "Win/win management: leading people in the new workplace."*8 There are lots of common headaches most of supervisors and leaders have to confront. "It's easy to understand how the broad scope these problems can easily lead to a less than steller attitude toward your job. However, adoping a sense of futility only serve to make matters worse. On the other hand, maintain a positive attitude helps you place things in perspective and can make coping eith problems a lot easier to do."*9 To initiate our programs more effectively for the people and communities who are interested to participate the programs, we need to emphasize the spirit of positive attitude and positive thinking. He believes that we are wise to expand our marketing efforts and focus on developing markets in places such as Asia. It is significant for him to point out that in addition to gaming, Nevada has phenomenal cultural, historic, and recreational resources that we must continue to promote. The Governor emphasizes that for our state's economy to thrive, all of the Silver State's tourism opportunities must be effectively marketed to both domestic and international visitors.*4 U.S. Senator John Ensign's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. This respectable man worked hard to provide for his family and taught his children the value of hard work, integrity, and independence. "The significance of life is to build and educate the continuous lives of the universe," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). People came to America to seek the American dream. Even though not all of them realize their American dream, eventually they could teach and help their children accomplish their contributions to our country.*5 On October 22, 2000, U.S. Senator Harry Reid received the "Outstanding Democrat of the Decade" 1990's Award from the Paradise Democratic Club of Las Vegas (PDCLV) at the Skyview Room of the Bally's Casino and Hotel, Las Vegas. In the Program, the National Anthem was sung by Rose McKinny James. The Keynote Speaker was Senator Harry Reid. The heightlight of the Event was the presentation of the Outstanding Democrat of the Year Award to U.S. Senator Harry Reid by the President of PDCLV, John Ponticello.*6 Senator Reid graduated from Utah State University in 1961. He received Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University. In 1968, he was elected to Nevada State Assembly at the age of 28. After two years, he was elected as Nevada's youngest legislation in the state's history. In 1977, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission. In 1983, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. After having served two terms in the House, he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980. On April 10, 1998, he was honored as Advisor and Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). In December of 1998, after returning for his third term in the U.S. Senate, he was unanimously elected by his Democratic colleagues to serve as the Assistant Minority Leader [now the Minority Leader (8/25/06)]. "Senator Reid loves heartily this country and our people. His leadership is accentuated with practical knowledge and deligent effort through his intelligence. He has achieved many years accomplishments to improve the quality of life of all Nevadans and help people realize the American Dream, " said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI), who was invited with his wife as guests to the Event by Congresswomen Shelley Berkley, County Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates, and former Las Vegas City Mayor Jan Laverty Jones. Senator Reid comes from Searchlight, Nevada, where in that rural mining town he learned the fundamental values of hard work and honesty that endure as his guiding principles. The Nevada's senior Senator was raised in a small cabin without indoor pluming and attended a two-room elementary school. His father was a hardrock miner with an 8th grade education, and his mother never finished high school, but the youngest of Harry and Inez Reid's four sons would go on to achieve the American dream. "Harry is now not just our senior Senator of Nevada in the Senate, he's one of the influential and important U. S. Senator for all our country in Washington, D. C.!" the Honorable U.S. Senator Richard Bryan pointed out during his short speech to the great awarding Event of the Club. "Senator Reid deserves special recognition for his continued leadership to the Democratic Party here in Nevada. His commitment to public service and distinguished record of fighting for the values we hold so dear has touched the lives of many in Nevada and across the country," wrote U.S. President Candidate and Vice President Al Gore. The distinguished accomplishments of Senator Reid has given he himself for us a successful model for people who wish to realize their American Dream. The maturity of citizens society is the fundamental guarantee for the normal processing of a democratic community. In a citizens society, it depends highly on the team of public intellectuals to integrate people's opinions, to analyze rationally, and to point out wise persperctives and notice. A public intellectual plays an important and significant responsibility of mission to evaluate public activities, to reflect people's opinion, to lead citizens, and to predict crisis. Public opinion is therefore made through the effort of the public intellectuals by their wise investigation to the people's mind and willingness, and by their right understancing and analysis toward the facts. U.S. Americans W. Lippmann and J. Raston, German E. Noalle-Neumann are ideal representatives of such kind of persons as of the public intellectual. Community service is important to our people and society, moreover we wish individuals as our public intellectual may also encourage more volunteers, events, and projects to better the quality of life of all our residents and visitors of Nevadan through community participation.*7 -------------------------------------------------- References *1. Happy birthday, Governor Kenny Guinn! By Tiffany ChangNevada Governor Kenny Guinn's birthday will be on August 24, 2006. This will be his 70th big birthday. Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) pays a special tribute to him and wishes him A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Governor Guinn believes in families. It is our pleasure to post the biography (personal) of Governor Kenny Guinn: Kenny C. Guinn, 69, was first elected Governor of Nevada in 1998. He was re-elected in 2002, capturing 68% of the vote, one of the widest margins of victory in a gubernatorial race in the state’s history. By Nevada law, he is term-limited and will leave office in January 2007.*1 Born in Arkansas, Guinn and his family moved to the small Central Valley community of Exeter, California at an early age. The son of migrant farm workers, Guinn was encouraged and prompted by his parents to get a good education. Helped along by many encouraging teachers and coaches, Guinn took this advice to heart and worked to prepare himself for the possibility of attending college. Another thing he took to heart in high school was his wife of now 49 years, Dema. Kenny and Dema began dating in high school, got married while he was in college, and have been together ever since. While attending Exeter High School, Guinn excelled at several sports: football, basketball, track, and swimming. He was good enough in the decathlon—a test of ten various track events—that he made it to the California AAU Championships his junior year. The young man he lost to, Rafer Johnson, went on to win the Gold Medal in the decathlon in the 1960 Rome Olympics. Although he enjoyed all sports, football was his love and Guinn also realized it was his best ticket to earn a college scholarship. In his senior year, a scout from the University of Southern California (USC) attended a game to check out the young running back. That day, Guinn ran for 280 yards and scored five touchdowns. USC soon came calling and offered Guinn a scholarship to the prestigious university. His parents’ dream would soon be fulfilled; their son, Kenny, would be the first in their family to attend college. After being told by legendary USC football coach Jess Hill that he would have to focus on football and give up basketball, Guinn decided to transfer back home to Fresno City College and later to Fresno State University, where he was named senior back of the year in 1958. Guinn earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Physical Education from Fresno State University. He later obtained a doctorate in Education from Utah State University. Upon graduation and after four years of teaching in high school, the family Guinn—Kenny, Dema and their first son, Jeff—moved to Las Vegas where Guinn went from central office administration to Clark County School District Superintendent in just five years. During that time, the couple’s second son, Steve, was born. In 1978, Guinn began applying his management skills in the private sector as Administrative Vice President for Nevada Savings and Loan, which later became PriMerit Bank. Once again, he quickly advanced through the management ranks and, in 1987, was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors. His success did not go unnoticed in the business community. In 1988, Southwest Gas Corporation made Guinn an offer he couldn’t refuse: President of the giant company. His involvement with the Southwest Gas culminated with him being named Chairman of the Board in 1993. Education had played a prominent role in Guinn’s life, providing him opportunities and opening doors that he had never imagined as a young boy growing up poor. So when the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) sought his assistance in righting the university, Guinn accepted the position. However, he refused to take the salary, except for one dollar; the rest was donated to UNLV’s scholarship program and other activities. Guinn instituted administrative and policy changes that helped the university regain its momentum as an ever-expanding urban college. The Governor and First Lady continue to volunteer their time and effort on behalf of countless organization, commissions, and charities, something that has always played an important role in their professional lives. The Guinns reside in Carson City at the Governor’s Mansion and have another home in Las Vegas. They are in the process of building a second home in northern Nevada. Besides their sons, the Guinns have two daughters-in-law and six grandchildren.*2 -------------------------------------------- References *1. State of Nevada. 'A biography of Governor Kenny C. EQ for business success GSBPA of WBTI***** "Management is nothing more tnan moivating other people." --- Lee Iacocca In the initiative period of the business administration program at the National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan, "Human Relations" had been an important course of the curriculums of its Department and Graduate School of Business Administration. "It is important for a manager to own the philosophy of management of 'The reaching of peak management achievement through successful work performance both on good production and human relations,'" pointed out Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei in his text book entitled "Modern Business Management" *1 in 1973. Dr. Tony Lei taught a three units course "Human Relations" at the Graduate School. The current popularlity of the "EQ for success" has been a critical emphasis and development of the importance of human relations in business. We are pleased to quote the following feature article*2: ----------------------------------- Increase Your Potential and EQ for Success By Natalie Tyrrell*3 and Tiffany Chang "It's been said there are three kinds of people: (1) Those who watch things happen. (2) Those who make things happen. (3) Those who wonder what happened? Don't be part of the third catergory of clueless people who wonder around aimlessly. It is not enough to breathe a sigh and figure that your learning days areover. Here you are in this world, this world that is undeniable the way it is. You can do nothing to change what happended in the past, yet you can do everything to vastly improve what lies in the future. You have the ability to build, to create, to improve yourself and your future. You can MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. Remember you have immense potential. Your future is vast and awesome. If you keep learning and improving, your destiny will bring you long term happiness, enrichment, success, love and much more. As the martial art student realized, his reward of the black belt represented the beginning - the start of a never-ending journey of discipline, work and the pursuit of an ever-higher standard. 'What is the true meaning of the diploma you are about to receive?' This is your Commencement Day. And it is only fitting to say to you, as we salute you for your accomplishment, that, truly, this is only the beginning," delivered the Commencement Speech at SMHS 2002 recently by Becky Ung, President of the School Board for San Marino Unified School District, California. Becky is a national and international famous Speaker in California, United States; Taipei, Taiwan; and Beijing, Shanghai, Amoy, China. She has published a numerious Vidio Tapes, feature articles, and books. Her recent famous book named "What you Wish is What you Get" was published by Songan Publishing Inc. in 2001 at Taipei, Taiwan. The next one of hers, "E. Q. Unlimited," will be published by Franklin Publications at Taipei in the fall of 2002. She is an expert of E. Q. (Emotional Intelligence). Becky has been honored as an Assistant Fellow of the Culture Institution (CI) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI).*4 "I am delighted by this honor. Thank you for the appointment. I think this is the biggest title that I have ever held!" Becky sent an e-mail to Dr. Tony Lei, President of WBTI, on May 19, 2002. "Besides what I'm already doing in my teaching goal, I'd like to continue to introduce and integrate the best of American culture and social into Chinese churches and families to help them in the assimilation process. People have to pursue, accept, and embrace all kinds of opportunities and challenges that lives have to offer. I encourage them to utilize their potential to the fullest extent. I believe awareness is a pre-requisite to a happy and successful life. I'll do my best to serve the Lord and follow His will. I'll also devote my time, talents, and resources to help others and make a difference in their lives," she spoke to the public. "As an Assistant Fellow of the Culture Institution of Washington Business and Technology Institute, it's my precious opportunity to realize my potential of entrepreneuship to work with all these outstanding faculty members of WBTI under the encouragement and spiritual leadeship of Elaine Chao who has been honored as the Chairperson of this Institute," said Becky Ung.*5 -------------------------------------- References *1.
