Each year, Nevadans across the Silver State join together to commemorate October 31, 1864, the day Nevada was admitted to the Union . This annual celebration of Nevada ’s heritage provides an opportunity for each of us to look back on the past 143 years. As we do so, we are reminded of the can-do pioneer spirit that led to the founding of our great state.*1

About Governor James A. Gibbons:

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons earned a B.S. in Geology and later, a M.S. in Mining/Geology from the University of Nevada at Reno. Gibbons received the MacKay School of Mines Alumnus of the Year Award in 1999, and remains an active supporter of Nevada¡¦s university and community college system. He also earned his J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law and completed his post-graduate work at the University of Southern California. Born and raised in Sparks, Nevada, Governor Jim Gibbons was a former United States Congressman. Jim was first elected to represent Nevada's 2nd District in the House of Representatives in 1996. He was re-elected to a fifth term in November 2004. Prior to coming to Congress, Gibbons gained a distinguished military background. A former combat pilot and decorated veteran of both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars, Governor Gibbons served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1971 and graduated from the USAF Air Command and Staff College as well as the Air War College. Attaining the rank of Colonel, Gibbons joined the Nevada Air Guard in 1975, and served as the group's Vice Commander from 1990 through 1996. Jim Gibbons served three terms in the Nevada State Legislature and was named ¡¡ìOutstanding Freshman Legislator¡¡?his first year in 1988. By 1993, Gibbons rose through the ranks to become Republican Whip of the State Assembly. Jim Gibbons is Governor of Nevada starting from January 1, 2007. As wildfires continue to rage throughout California , Governor Jim Gibbons*1 announced today that additional fire suppression resources from Nevada are in route to provide much needed assistance.

The Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) is currently providing six Strike Teams, consisting of 35 engines and 127 fire personnel. These teams are comprised of highly skilled fire crews who specialize in both structural and wildland fires. Governor Gibbons also authorized two Nevada National Guard C-130s and two helicopters along with an NDF helicopter manager, to deploy to the California fires.

In July 2007 Governor Gibbons and Governor Schwarzenegger signed a Supplemental Interstate Compact for Emergency Mutual Assistance, providing the framework for sharing state resources during emergency situations- opening the door for fire resources to move quickly in times of need.

“We are seeing the devastating effects of drought this year, during which nearly one million acres burned in Nevada and other western states and left millions more across the west at extreme risk for wildfire. We relied upon resources from our neighboring states to assist in our fire suppression efforts, and Nevada is proud to be able to provide timely assistance now to fire crews in California ," said Governor Jim Gibbons.*2

Governor Gibbons has also offered to send a Disaster Medical Facility to Southern California to ensure that all necessary medical services are available to those in need. The Disaster Medical Facility, modeled on the rapidly deployable field hospitals currently used by the U.S. Military, is designed to become fully operational within 24 hours. This portable hospital is capable of providing up to 50 additional hospital beds and around-the-clock specialized medical support.

“Natural disasters can strike anywhere at any time. As a state, we pride ourselves on our readiness capabilities, which are being utilized today to help our neighbors in California ,” Governor Gibbons added.*3
